Galatasaray presidential candidate Mehmet Cengiz has told Galatasaray fans that the would push to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic next summer.
The Swede signed a new one year deal with Manchester United over the summer and returned from a serious knee injury last month.
He crowned his first start in eight months with a thunderous free-kick during an otherwise miserable 2-1 defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday.
And Cengiz, who is rivalling Dursun Ozbek for the presidency, has promised to sign the 36-year-old if he’s elected.
“I keep my word, ” he said. “Galatasaray need three to four transfers, I still say I want Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic could play at Galatasaray, I still say Ibrahimovic.”
We have to be wary of any transfer news that comes out of an election campaign, especially when a high profile name – beneficial to investors as well as supporters – like Zlatan’s is mentioned.
But the benefits of going to Turkey for a man who, you sense, could probably play for another few years – such is the intelligence of his footballing brain – are obvious. Both Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor, among others, have benefitted from moves to the Turkish Super Lig in recent times and seeing Zlatan doing damage in yet another country would be a welcome sight.
