Paul Pogba must be given a different role at Manchester United to get the best out of his talents, claims Paul Scholes.
The Frenchman has been in pretty good form this season, starting the campaign in fantastic fashion before an injury in mid-September ruled him out for a couple of months.
His world-class quality has shone at times, and his first-half performance against Southampton in Saturday’s disappointing 0-0 draw was superb. As with the rest of the team, he was far quieter in the second half.
Scholes suggested his role in the side needs to be changed by manager Jose Mourinho to get the most out of one of the world’s most talented midfielders.
“The players don’t realise the quality they have, nobody in England should be able to get near Paul Pogba,” Scholes said. “He’s being asked to do a role he’s not comfortable with.
“He needs to be the one creating chances, scoring goals. These players need to realise their strengths, he’s so strong and quick, you can’t get near him. He doesn’t use his strength, he needs to realise that himself.”
Pogba certainly does use his strength. It’s an odd claim from Scholes, but the point about the 24-year-old being used in an unsuitable role is one that must be considered.
United have looked lacklustre and turgid in a 4-2-3-1 formation for some time, now. Mourinho has to consider whether a fresh approach is necessary after the Reds have gone four games without a win.
