Ryan Giggs has outlined what would consist of a good season for Manchester United, stating that the Reds must finish second to Manchester City and have good runs in both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Jose Mourinho’s side were knocked out of the EFL Cup in a 2-1 humiliating defeat to Championship side Bristol City. They’ve also slipped down to third in the league since that defeat, drawing three consecutive games against Leicester City, Burnley and then Southampton.
With United currently 15 points behind City, Giggs said: “I think United would take second now and have to concentrate on keeping hold of that.
“You have to hold up your hands and say City have been the best team, so second place and good runs in the FA Cup and Champions League would represent a good campaign.”
It’s not the attitude that would have been prevalent at United under Sir Alex Ferguson. And perhaps it’s a sign of the time that one of Fergie’s best players is accepting that United are second best.
The feeling around the country is that United remain in transition since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. And that’s true.
Mourinho has recently complained that the disparity in the two clubs’ transfer expenditure has caused the gap between the sides. That’s despite the Reds spending over £300m since Mourinho’s arrival.
Many expected City to win the title, they were the favourites. They still haven’t. There’s a long way to go, but they are running away with it. United were expected to challenge seriously, and haven’t done.
