Ryan Giggs has claimed he recommended signing teenage sensations Gabriel Jesus and Kylian Mbappe to Manchester United for just £5m.
The Welshman was assistant manager to Louis van Gaal and a player/coach under David Moyes. In an extensive interview with The Times, Giggs revealed he scouted both Jesus and Mbappe before the pair earned themselves big moves.
Jesus, of course, joined Manchester City and has cemented himself as first choice striker ahead of Sergio Aguero under Pep Guardiola. Mbappe, meanwhile, is one of the world’s most expensive footballers after an £160m move to Paris Saint-Germain from AS Monaco this summer.
“I watched Gabriel Jesus play three years ago,” Giggs revealed. “I watched Mbappe for a year. I was watching them with the scout and it was a no-brainer.
“It was just like, “Get them.” It would have been £5million or something — get them, loan them back — and that’s where the recruitment could have been better,” Giggs explained.
While United have their own attacking talents in homegrown Marcus Rashford and £36m Anthony Martial, there is no doubt that Jesus and Mbappe would have been fantastic additions at a young age.
And had they been signed and played in United’s reserves and given no first-team chances, they would be unlikely to reach the level they are at now. But as Giggs suggests, signing them and then loaning them back to their respective clubs would have allowed them to continue their development.
United missed out, that much is clear, but they do have two players with similar potential in Rashford and Martial.
