Paul Pogba has admitted that Manchester United have lost their winning mentality since losing 2-1 to Manchester City in early December.
The Reds slipped to third in the Premier League with a 0-0 draw against Southampton, a third consecutive draw after games against both Leicester City and Burnley finished 2-2.
It’s been a poor month for United, who started off December with a fantastic 3-1 away win against Arsenal but have finished it without a win in four games.
Pogba claimed the Reds suffered from an inability to find the final ball, something Henrikh Mkhitaryan, making his first start since November 5th, was seriously guilty of in a very poor display.
“We wanted to win today, but we could only get the draw. We need to get back in the winning mentality,” Pogba admitted, “because it will be better for all of us.
“We didn’t have the final pass today, and we had a penalty that wasn’t given, and if we had that, and scored, it would’ve changed the game.
“The pressure is coming from behind, but we have to forget about everyone else, and focus on ourselves.”
Blaming the 0-0 draw on one penalty shout is not a surprise from Pogba, or from manager Jose Mourinho who did the same. But it’s completely wrong. United played as if they were winning 3-0 in the second half.
The Reds sat deep against a Southampton side who shipped five goals at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur on Boxing Day.
The Saints are poor defensively, they lack a finisher in attack, too. They hadn’t kept a cleansheet in their 11 previous games before travelling to Old Trafford. It’s another poor result.
