Manchester United are closely monitoring the progress of Napoli midfielder Jorginho as they search for a replacement for Michael Carrick.
The club captain, who signed a one year extension over the summer, has only featured once this season – against Burton Albion in September – due to heart problems.
Jose Mourinho has identified a variety of midfield options ahead of the summer, with the likes of Leon Goretzka, Leander Dendoncker, Julian Weigl and Lorenzo Pellegrini appearing on his radar.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, the 54-year-old has pin-pointed Jorginho as a potential option in January, although the midfielder would be cup tied due to featuring in the Champions League with Napoli this season.
There will need to be some considerable evolution in midfield over the summer given that Carrick and Marouane Fellaini both look likely to leave, while Ander Herrera‘s purpose in this side is becoming more and more ambiguous with each game that passes.
And Jorginho looks like the right player to start with: tenacious, dextrous on the ball, skilful, blessed with a serious engine.
At 26, he is at the peak of his powers – a regular in an exciting, dynamic Napoli side described by Pep Guardiola as the best side he has ever faced as manager, starting 15 of their 18 Serie A games this season.
United need a regular face at the base of midfield – someone to take the load off Nemanja Matic – and Jorginho certainly fits the bill.
