Jose Mourinho is worried that Romelu Lukaku’s drop in form for Manchester United is a result of his summer signing putting on too much muscle recently.
Lukaku signed for an initial £75m from Everton this year and started his Man United career in sensationally good form. He netted 11 goals in his first 10 games to see propel him to the top of the goalscoring charts in the Premier League.
Since September, though, the goalscoring has dried up somewhat. Goals against AFC Bournemouth and West Bromwich Albion were match-winning ones for United, but the goal-a-game that came to be expected from the Belgian is no longer happening, as could have been have predicted.
Neil Custis claims in a Sun exclusive that Mourinho ‘fears’ Lukaku has ‘lost his pace’ after bulking up too much.
The Sun claim that Lukaku’s ‘pput on almost half a stone’ since joining United this summer, leading the club to be ‘worried’ about his pace.
United’s doctors have reportedly told Mourinho that the half a stone gained is purely muscle and not fat, as would be a bigger worry, but Mourinho is attributing Lukaku’s poor goalscoring run to this increase in weight.
In a more interesting insight, Mourinho has also allegedly told Lukaku to play further forward.
He’s criticised the Belgian, according to Custis, about ‘simply not playing far enough forward’ and Mourinho is now ‘fed up’ with having to constantly instruct Lukaku to stay further upfield in games from the sideline.
