Ivan Perisic has discussed what kept him from joining Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
The Croatian looked certain to join the Reds from Inter Milan in a transfer saga that dragged on for some time.
Contrasting reports over the fee Man United had offered circulated, while Inter’s desire to keep Perisic was never in doubt.
Now, with Perisic in superb form at the start of the season, he’s revealed that manager Luciano Spaletti did convince him to stay.
“Luciano Spalletti told us that every player is important and we got proof of that in the win, as even those who haven’t had as much space made their mark,” Perisic said to Sport Mediaset after scoring a hat-trick in his side’s 5-0 dismantling of Chievo.
“Spalletti was extremely important in convincing me to stay.”
Perisic now has seven goals and six assists in 13 Serie A games this season, playing a crucial role in Inter’s return to competing for the title with Juventus and Napoli.
The 28-year-old signed a new five-year deal at Inter in September after his move to United failed. It appears, from what he’s saying, that he chose to stay at the club and reject United rather than that a fee could not be agreed or the deal simply couldn’t go through.
