Ryan Giggs has noted that he should have succeeded Louis van Gaal in 2016 rather than Jose Mourinho, noting that he knows that a Manchester United player looks like.
Giggs, who took charge of the first team for four games after David Moyes was sacked, spent two seasons as Van Gaal’s assistant before the Dutchman was sacked after winning the FA Cup.
But Mourinho, upon taking charge at Old Trafford, told the Welshman – who wants to enter full time management – that there was no place for him on his technical staff.
And Giggs, in an interview with the Times, implied that he would have suited the profile of Man United manager more than Mourinho.
“I thought I was in with a shout, but the club were in a difficult situation,” he said. “They had fallen down the pecking order. They went for a winner, in Jose, a win-at-all-costs type of manager.”
“Is Jose a typical Manchester United manager? Probably not, but United were in a situation of ‘how quickly can we get back to the top?’
“I totally understand that. I just felt I could have brought continuity. I knew the players. I know what a Manchester United player looks like.”
Regardless of how well you know the club, its players, its traditions, and the expectations of supporters, your first full time job in football cannot be at a club of United’s stature.
To suppose that you could fails to respect the level of managerial pedigree and knowledge of the year-upon-year pursuit of silverware needed to even reach the threshold at Old Trafford.
That said, Giggs could, on day, take up the mantle at United, but just like Pep Guardiola or Luis Enrique, he needs to clock up some miles in the managerial game first.
