Neville: Watching Luke Shaw's development stagnate is very frustrating, he should be England left-back

Phil Neville has admitted his frustration at Luke Shaw’s stagnating development at Manchester United.

The former-Man United man scouted Shaw before the Reds paid almost £30million to bring him to the club and make him the world’s most expensive teenager, at the time.

Shaw had a tough first season under Louis van Gaal before excellent form at the beginning of the 2015/16 campaign was interrupted by a horrendous leg break in September against PSV Eindhoven. It took him months to recover, and he’s bad luck with injuries, as well as criticism of his attitude, ever since.

Now, he may be on the brink of an Old Trafford exit, with Jose Mourinho favouring Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Daley Blind over him.

“Look, he should be England’s left-back, 100 per cent,” Neville said on Sky Sports’ The Debate. “I scouted him for United when I was coach there.

“At Southampton I thought, ‘He’s an England left-back’, he was one of the best young left-backs I’ve seen in a long time. Going forward he had absolutely everything.

“I just find it frustrating now that he’s not grasping the opportunity in front of him and fulfilling that potential.

“He needs to play football and I’m not sure that’s going to be at United.”

His struggles at United are likely a combination of factors. He hasn’t been given enough chances in the past two seasons, but maybe what Mourinho and other coaches are seeing in training is far from good enough. We can’t be sure, but given how much talent the left-back has, whatever the reason, it’s a great shame it looks like he won’t make it at United at this stage.
