Marcus Rashford has revealed he watched and learnt from videos of Brazil legend Ronaldo when he was younger.
The young Manchester United striker was praised by Ronaldo during the summer, and spoke of his admiration for one of Europe’s most lethal forwards of the past few decades.
Rashford was speaking ahead of England’s friendly game against Brazil at Wembley on Tuesday evening. If Rashford does play, which he is hoping to do, it’ll be his first game against the Brazilians, and he’ll be aiming to impress Ronaldo once more.
The 20-year-old revealed his first ever game at Old Trafford was when Ronaldo scored a sensational hat-trick to send United out of the UEFA Champions League back in 2003. He was five years old.
“It was my first ever game that I saw live. I will always remember it,” Rashford told The Independent.
“I used to watch a lot of him growing up. All of his games.
“And I’ve seen a few bits from him from quite a while back, all the clips on YouTube.”
Rashford admitted his delight at earning praise from Ronaldo during the summer.
“He was obviously a top player who won a lot of things in his career,” he continued. “So when you know he’s saying good things about you then it really stands out.
“I think you [learn] naturally. When you’re young you watch clips of the best players in the world and try and emulate them, so it just tends to happen naturally.
“He always played free. No matter where he was playing, he played free and went out there and expressed himself.
”When you do that, that’s when you play your best football.”
Brazil’s players all play with freedom, and flair. It’s clear Rashford attempts to follow that footballing philosophy, and it makes him one of United’s most exciting players. There is no doubt that Old Trafford’s heartbeat increases a little when Rashford gets into possession.
