Speaking to the Telegraph, Jamie Vardy has backed his former Leicester teammate Danny Drinkwater to get a call up for England’s World Cup squad at the end of the season, despite rejecting Southgate’s call to the current internationals due to a calf injury.
Drinkwater joined Chelsea in the summer, but has struggled to get minutes on the pitch with Cesc Fabregas, new signing Tiemoue Bakayoko and former Leicester teammate N’Golo Kante being ahead of the Englishman in the pecking order.
Vardy was asked about his ex-teammate’s chances at getting a call-up for the England World Cup squad and he said
Definitely. If he is playing the best he can, then why not? He should be in with a shot, but it is down to him to make sure he puts the performances in there. I think he definitely wants to play for his country, but, to be honest, he has been struggling to get a bit of match time. He was injured and he needs to get the match sharpness back. He has been doing that in recent weeks for Chelsea and he needs to keep building that up.
