Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that record signing Alexandre Lacazette will miss Saturday’s clash with Manchester United after picking up a groin injury against Huddersfield Town.
The Frenchman, who spent eight seasons at Lyon, joined the Gunners for a club record £52.7m over the summer.
He has claimed seven goals in 15 games, including one during Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield, but was forced off at half time with a groin problem.
And Wenger, speaking after the game, confirmed that the striker would not recover in time to face Arsenal at the Emirates.
“Lacazette has a groin problem and will be out certainly for Saturday’s game,” he said.
He also added that Alexis Sanchez sustained a minor hamstring problem but made it clear that the knock wasn’t serious.
“Sanchez had a little hamstring problem – that’s why I took him off but I think he will be alright.”
Olivier Giroud will take his fellow countryman’s place in the starting XI and that should serve as both a relief and reason to be cautious for Man United’s back four.
Lacazette is something of an unpredictable, instinctive forward, capable of drifting out of games completely before suddenly popping out of nowhere to take a chance. He is what you would call your typical striker, and preparing how to nullify him can be tricky for that reason alone.
Giroud, on the other hand, is no stranger to United or Mourinho. He scored a late equaliser at Old Trafford back in November 2016 and also netted a late strike in 2014. In other words, this is a man whose attacking strategy is nothing new to United, but they will need to show greater levels of discipline and strength to keep him quiet this time around.
