Anthony Martial has insisted people are reminded that he is just 21 years old when they judge his career so far, as well as his current form.
The Manchester United forward has won three trophies already (FA Cup, EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League), played over 100 games for the club and scored more than 30 goals. He’s in one of his better spells at this moment in time, impressing both off the bench as a substitute as well as from the start.
He had difficulties last season in his second year at the club, and in Jose Mourinho’s first, but has settled back down again and is now playing at the level that Man United fans were treated to when he first joined the Reds.
“I had some problems off the pitch [last season] that played in my head,” Martial explained to Telefoot. “I wasn’t really focused.
“But now when I go out onto the pitch, I want to tear it up.
“Some people forget my age. Given my talent, they expected me to explode earlier. But everyone has their own pace.
“With my club I want to win as many trophies as possible, and with the national team I hope to establish myself in the first team and win the World Cup.”
It is important to remember Martial’s age, as he says. Particularly when he’s giving such mature interviews as he this one with Telefoot. Some players compete with the world’s best at 21, players of a ridiculously high level or just an early maturity: Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Ronaldo.
But others need time. Martial is competing on the world’s best stage, in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, but can have off games as he becomes a better player.
