Man United superstar encourages Zlatan Ibrahimovic to play at the World Cup

Marcos Rojo has opened up about his relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Manchester United, hailing the striker as a “phenomenon” and a “beast”.

The 36-year-old enjoyed a superb opening campaign at Man United, netting 28 goals in all competitions, before suffering a severe knee ligament injury in April.

He made a miraculous early return to action against Newcastle United earlier this month and impressed with a lively cameo during the 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.

And Rojo, when asked about his teammate, was quick to haul his superb mentality both in training and on the pitch, whilst also revealing that the Swede was not considering coming out of retirement for the World Cup next year.

“He [Mourinho] always tells us to play quietly in practice because with Ibra we kill each other with kicks,” he said.

“He [Ibrahimovic]’s an amazing character, but for those who don’t know him, he seems like a bighead but he’s a phenomenon, he’s a beast who goes forward and wants to win everything.

“I asked Ibra that now that they [Sweden] are in the World Cup if he would like to go, he says no but I don’t know. For me he has to go.”

Zlatan will need some time yet before we can expect to see him back to his bombastic best, but the early signs have been promising, and indeed revealing.

His current role under Jose Mourinho this season differs notably from what we saw last term, with the Portuguese seemingly giving the striker greater license to roam around the space just in behind the striker and between the defence, feeding the ball through to teammates and bringing them into the game.

And supporters will hope that Zlatan, with no other No.10 options seemingly available at this moment in time, can become a reliable axis for United’s attack in the coming weeks as he returns to optimum fitness.
