Jose Mourinho has hinted that Anthony Martial has been Manchester United’s most improved player this season.
The Frenchman has been in fine form in the opening third of the campaign, starring prolifically off the bench.
That form as a substitute has earned him a new-found place in the starting line-up, with Martial picked in Mourinho’s XI for three games in a week recently, against Newcastle United, FC Basel and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Martial scored against Newcastle, and Mourinho was full of praise for the young forward ahead of Saturday afternoon’s match against Brighton.
Talking about his attacking players, Mourinho said, “I think they give what they can.
“I cannot complain about the dedication or the motivation. They all try to give their best.
“I think we had an improvement with Martial. He’s scoring more goals than last season. That’s why he is playing more. He has more minutes on the pitch.
“The other players are what they are. They have different kinds of qualities. Sometimes they produce a lot, and we have lots of chances and we don’t score enough.”
Martial’s recently been shortlisted for TF1’s Young French Player of the Year award, and was finally recalled to Didier Deschamps’ France squad.
He’s contributed seven goals (five goals, two assists) already this campaign, a better output than the whole of last season. He looks confident and his ability is showing itself again.
