Jose Mourinho has identified Valencia’s Carlos Soler as his primary transfer target ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.
The 20-year-old, despite making his senior debut less than a year ago, has established himself as an indispensable figure in Marcelino’s side this season, making 11 appearances and claiming four assists from midfield.
A senior club spokesperson recently made it clear that no approach had been made for Soler following reports suggesting that Manchester United were lining up a £30m bid.
But according to the Independent‘s Miguel Delaney, Mourinho will make advances for Soler in January and could offer the club Andreas Pereira, who is on loan at the Mestalla, plus cash to secure the youngster’s services for the second part of the season.
The 54-year-old has been told by the club’s board that he will need to sell players before he adds to his squad in January to avoid seeing the wage bill – which went up by 13 per cent this year – increase even further.
And he may be tempted to offload Pereira – whose latest comments suggest he is leaning more towards staying in La Liga than coming back to Old Trafford – for a reasonable price to capture a midfielder capable of adding the creative impetus in midfield United sorely lacked throughout October.
Valencia may be pursued to sell at a certain price given that, in spite of their superb start to the 2017/18 campaign, they continue to find themselves in financial trouble.
