Jose Mourinho admitted Manchester United were poor in their 1-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Reds were fortunate to come away from Old Trafford with three points on Saturday, a deflected Ashley Young goal the only thing to separate the two sides.
The Seagulls defended well and had saw a couple of fierce, low balls go across the face of goal with no one to finish them off.
Mourinho admitted his side “didn’t play well.”
Speaking after the game, he continued: “The intensity got higher in the second half. After the goal, we couldn’t kill the game. In the last 10/15 minutes, we gave everything for the clean sheet.”
United started the same starting line-up as for last weekend’s dismantling of Newcastle. That meant a front six of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Mourinho later brought on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Fans witnessed some fantastic football from that front six last week, but Mourinho admitted the excess of attackers meant the Reds lost control of the game.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the pundits said we played with too many attackers. They would be right. We lost control of the game. Matic and Pogba were isolated in the centre of the park,” he said.
After the 4-1 win against Newcastle, Mourinho instantly pointed out that playing Martial and Rashford together in future would create defensive difficulties.
That wasn’t the reason for United’s poor performance against Brighton, though. Chris Hughton’s side defended resolutely, but United were lacklustre.
