Benfica chief executive Domingos Oliveira has told Manchester United that the club would listen to offers from Alex Grimaldo.
The Spaniard, who came through Barcelona’s esteemed La Masia system, arrived at Benfica in 2015 and established himself as a regular starter last season.
Reports have claimed that Jose Mourinho sent scouts to Portugal in order to monitor the left-back’s progress ahead of a potential bid.
And Oliveira, speaking in an interview with IBTimes, has made it clear that the club would be open to selling Grimaldo at the right price.
“For a player who is 22, 23, 24, there is a huge market,” he said.
“I am not talking specifically about Grimaldo, but all players with those conditions, they have a market. We do not want to close the door to anyone. We don’t want to force them to stay here.
“We want them to stay as long as they can. And while they are here they are happy but once both parties agree on a transfer, usually the player leaves, but with a good relationship with the club.”
Benfica are well known for being something of an international selling club – a kind of conveyor belt, if you will, capable of producing reliable talent with Champions League experience at a young age.
Victor Lindelof serves as a classic example, of course, and Mourinho clearly isn’t done with his business over at Benfica as he continues to search for a proper left-back to fill the void created by the shortcomings of Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian in recent times.
And he fits the profile of what Mourinho would want from a left-back: superb on the ball, bustling with energy, devastatingly quick, disciplined without the ball, and still with plenty of time to develop at the age of just 22.
