Chelsea’s new-look Stamford Bridge will be the most expensive stadium in Europe after the club increased the cost of the stadium plans.
The Times reports that the new stadium will now set the club back well over a £1 billion as they increase the stadium capacity to 60,000.
The report states that initial plans had estimated a cost somewhere in the region of £500 million to knock down the current stadium and rebuild from the bottom.
The news comes just days after it was reported that the stadium plans were delayed, meaning the club may not be playing their football in the new Stamford Bridge until 2024.
Chelsea are still yet to decide where they will be temporarily playing their football while the Bridge is being redeveloped.
Wembley remains the most likely option but no official decision has been made yet.
Work in and around the grounds of the Bridge is due to start next year but Chelsea will not move out of the current stadium until 2020.
