Rolls Royce defender: Varane stuns in debut against tricky Wolves

Manchester United star Raphael Varane showed fans just what he can bring to the team in what was an impressive debut vs Wolves.

The French superstar was one of the main reasons why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s men kept a clean-sheet and secured a 1-0 win.

United may not have deserved the three points but it was the type of match the team would have conceded during in the past.

Varane’s stature and class showed and he was able to cruise through the match relatively untroubled despite some brilliant defending.

The former Real Madrid man’s ability to make the difficult look easy is a testament to his talent and fans have plenty to be excited about.

The Peoples Person previously covered the English media’s massive praise for Varane and it’s safe to say they will be praising him again.

Not being dribbled past is rather impressive given how Adama Traore was running riot for Wolves.

It’s even more impressive when considering how open Manchester United looked against their fiery opponents.

As sensational as his performance was, the hope is Varane can get even better the more he settles in to his new surroundings.

Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are waiting on the wings for an opportunity to pounce and get into the first team so there’s no room for error, even for Harry Maguire.

Solskjaer will be hoping to provide more protection to his defence next time but the good news is he knows they can stand tall to strong opposition.

Player ratings: Individual brilliance sees United grab pulsating win over Wolves

Manchester United rode their luck to beat Wolves 1-0 at Molyneux late this afternoon. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 8 – The double save in the second half was worth 3 points to United and rolled back the years to De Gea at his best.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Some horrible passing and offered little going forward for the second week running. Made a fantastic goal-line clearance in the first half, though.

Raphael Varane 8 – Not a perfect start, but a very good start. Looked composed among the chaos and was a big reason United kept a clean sheet.

Harry Maguire 6 – a bit dull and positionally questionable, but kept a clean sheet so let’s give him some credit.

Luke Shaw 6.5 – Is he starting to look a bit chunky again? Not as good as we have seen him in the last few months.

Fred 3 – Not cut out to be a single holding midfielder. Was horribly bullied, especially in the first half.

Paul Pogba 6.5 – Very poor in the first half but did better once Cavani came on and there were more options to aim for.

Jadon Sancho 6 – A pretty uninspiring first start for Sancho, but there were flashes of what might be to come.

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Nothing special from Bruno today.

Dan James 3 – When will Ole give up on the lad? Is he his love child?

Mason Greenwood 8.5 – Was greedy now and again but that’s the mindset of a centre-forward. Shades of Ruud van Nistelrooy today.

Substitutes

Edinson Cavani 7.5 – without doing much on the ball, his positional intelligence and runs transformed the game.

Anthony Martial 7 – 20 minutes off the wing is the right way forward to get Martial firing again. Did OK.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Not enough time to make an impact.

Astronomical: Cristiano Ronaldo's United salary far higher than previously reported - Telegraph

Cristiano Ronaldo will become the highest-paid footballer in Premier League history when he signs his Manchester United contract, according to a new report.

The Telegraph’s James Ducker has revealed exclusively that, contrary to other reports placing his salary at £480,000 per week, Ronaldo will be on significantly more.

‘It is understood that Ronaldo’s two-year contract, which includes the option of another 12 months, will see him stand to earn in excess of the £560,000 a week that former United forward Alexis Sanchez’s deal was worth at Old Trafford including bonuses and image rights,’ Ducker writes.

‘However, the contract is said to be substantially less than Lionel Messi’s £1m a week deal with Paris Saint-Germain, whom he joined on a free transfer from Barcelona earlier this month.

‘Raphael Varane’s £400,000 a week deal with United had briefly made him the highest earning player in the Premier League this summer but that will now be eclipsed by his new team-mate, with whom he also played at Real.’

Ducker is a very reliable journalist but his claims of both Ronaldo’s salary and that of Varane are well in excess of what has been reported elsewhere.

Varane’s contact was widely reported to be £200,000 per week.

Ducker does include ‘bonuses and image rights’ in his calculation, though, which could in theory make his figures plausible.

The journalist also claims in the same article that ‘The Glazers had been presented with the opportunity to sign Ronaldo earlier in the summer but had resisted given that they were already committing almost £120m to sign Jadon Sancho and Varane from Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid respectively.

‘But the owners decided to make an exception for Ronaldo once City entered the running for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner after resolving they could not allow a game-changing signing and one of their most revered former players to join the champions and team they are trying to usurp at the top of the Premier League.’

This part of Ducker’s exclusive is more consistent with other reports. It was widely reported earlier in the summer that Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s agent, had sounded out United, amongst other clubs, about a possible move.

It is also clear that City’s interest appeared to begin only when they accepted defeat in their pursuit of Harry Kane from Spurs – in other words, CR7 was in some senses their consolation prize and the reticence on both sides allowed United to pounce.

Manchester United u23s in six goal thriller with City rivals - Match Report

In search of their first win of the season, Manchester United’s u23s played hosts to cross town rivals Manchester City.

The match kicked off straight into action as Charlie Savage had a good chance for United but it was City who went up the other end and started the scoring through James McAtee in the fifth minute.

Last season’s champions, City, were causing troubles to United’s defence but United were up for the match, creating opportunities too.

A big chance came for United in the late stages of the first half when Hannibal Mejbri sent in a corner to the towering Joseph Olowu who sent his header just inches wide.

United’s relentless attacks provided dividends though, just before the half time whistle when Alvaro Fernandez produced a wonder goal after a long solo run. It was similar to his recent brilliant goal against Chelsea.

Fernandez looked to turn provider after the restart, sending in a dangerous cross which Joe Hugill just narrowly missed getting on the end of.

Just moments later, United came close again to taking the lead when Olowu’s speculative cross hit the crossbar.

The match was proving to be an even encounter with the clubs exchanging blow for blow but City ultimately took the lead through McAtee’s second in the 60th minute.

City’s danger man proved too hot to handle as he went on to add a third for his hat-trick in the 79th minute.

United looked to bounce back and clawed one back through Dillon Hoogewerf who smashed one home with a nice finish.

Chasing the equaliser, United sent their men forward which left gaps in the back allowing City’s Taione Sodje to put the match to bed in the 87th minute.

A bad result was made worse in the dying seconds of the match as the impressive Fernandez picked up a second yellow, meaning he will miss the next match.

It will be a big loss for the side as Fernandez has started the season very strongly.

United: Kovar; Wellens, Olowu, Hardley, Fernandez; Svidersky, Savage; Iqbal (Hoogewerf 81), Hannibal, Shoretire; Hugill (McNeill 70).

Fabrizio Romano: European clubs fighting to land brilliant United talent

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that teenage prospect Amad Diallo will spend the coming season out on loan.

The 19-year-old prospect made a £19m switch from Atalanta back in January and has shown tantalising glimpses of his undoubted potential.

However, with competition for first team places heating up significantly over the summer, Solskjaer has now confirmed that the Ivorian will continue his development away from Old Trafford.

As covered on United’s official site, the Norwegian revealed the plans during yesterday’s pre-match press conference ahead of the upcoming fixture at Wolves.

“Yes, I do (expect him to go out on loan). It’s not 100 percent signed but we’ve agreed.” Ole said.

“I don’t have to say which team it is yet [smiles], but we’ve found a place that Amad feels excited about and we feel excited about.”

Previous reports had linked the talented winger with a possible loan switch to current Championship strugglers Sheffield United.

It has even been suggested that Amad’s previous club, Atalanta, are keen to bring their young ace back for a season-long loan in the familiar climes of Serie A.

A return to the Gewiss Stadium would, of course, bring up the curious prospect of the young Ivorian facing off against the Red Devils in the upcoming Champions League Group F contests between the two sides.

However, Twitter transfer guru Fabrizio Romano today threw another couple of possible destinations into the mix.

Romano Tweeted: ‘Exclusive, Feyenoord are now joining the race with many clubs approaching Manchester United for Amad Diallo loan. Talks ongoing – Feyenoord are pushing, but Premier League and Bundesliga clubs are still in.

‘Final decision to be made in the next hours with player’s camp.’

Amad is at a crucial stage in his development, so it’s vital that he gets a move to a club that plays the right type of football and provides a stage for him to hone his talents.

It’s to be hoped that he secures 12 months of high-level football, before coming back primed to challenge the likes of Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood for a place in the Red Devils’ first team.

The surprising shirt number Ronaldo is set to wear at United

After sealing his return to Manchester United yesterday Cristiano Ronaldo has a big decision on his hands.

Having rejected bitter rivals Manchester City for the club that developed and nurtured him into one of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldo returns 12 years since he departed.

But it is unlikely he will wear his iconic number seven shirt as he embarks on his second spell with the club, as that number belongs to Edinson Cavani.

Upon arriving in 2003, the Portuguese international was given the number seven shirt following the departure of David Beckham.

A challenge the then 18-year-old wasn’t thrilled with:

“When I arrived at United, I asked for 28 but the coach said, No, you will wear seven.”

“I was petrified as I knew Beckham wore that shirt. But I took on the challenge and since then it has been my lucky number. I have won everything in football with that shirt.”

Over the next six years Ronaldo added himself to the list of greats to have worn the coveted shirt, alongside the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona and the aforementioned Beckham.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has only ever worn three shirt numbers in his club career, seven, nine and 28.

With seven and nine occupied by Cavani and Anthony Martial respectively, his return to Old Trafford could see him return to his first ever number in professional football, 28.

CR7 donned the number 28 during his one season with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, a season where he netted five goals in 31 games while attracting the attention of every major club in the world.

Another option could be 77 for obvious reasons, with some other alternatives being 12, 15 or 24.

There is a chance Ronaldo could wear number seven for Champions League fixtures, as those numbers have not been finalised as of yet, but it remains to be seen how happy Cavani would feel about sharing the famed jersey.

Match Report: Prolific striker returns from injury to help United claim draw

Manchester United women’s final game of pre-season ended all square as they drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Reds led at half time after a superb free kick from skipper Katie Zelem that brought her tally to three goals in two games.

Unfortunately, the Seagulls made a strong start to the second half, scoring with their first attack after the break.

Mary Earps pulled off two fantastic saves before Brighton found the back of the net with a frantic close range shot.

Earps stayed busy for much of the match, pulling off some key saves to see United over the line with a draw.

Meanwhile at the other end, Martha Thomas and Lucy Staniforth had their chances but some fine keeping from the Brighton keeper kept out their efforts.

The pre-season friendly was hotly contested behind closed doors at Loughborough University.

The game came with less than a week to go before Marc Skinner’s first competitive game in charge, as they take on Reading in the opening game of the WSL on Friday.

The match provided an opportunity for Alessia Russo to get some minutes in the tank as she replaced the England international, Ella Toone in the 62nd minute.

The striker was injured for much of last season but showed promise in the games she was involved in.

If she can stay fit this season, she could prove to be invaluable for the Reds.

The Ronaldo effect reaps rewards for money-grabbing Glazers

Manchester United have reportedly benefitted in more ways than one with Cristiano Ronaldo’s impending transfer from Juventus.

The sensational superstar secured a shock move recently, having initially looked as though he was heading to Manchester City.

There are many reports as to why that didn’t end up happening and it’s safe to say there was plenty of drama behind the scenes.

United fans couldn’t contain their excitement and there’s no doubt that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a big fan of Ronaldo.

Club owners the Glazers will be extremely happy with the reaction, particularly from a financial sense as they received the type of news they would have liked.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils’ purchase of Ronaldo saw the club’s stock market value shoot up by £212m, with share prices soaring by 9.8%, though it’s since fallen a little.

As positive as that has been, some context shows the overall negative as over a six-month period there has been a -3.18% drop.

Having said that, the year-to-date readings are better as it’s gone up by 11.05%, so it’s clear to see something has gone wrong from the latter half of the year.

The dip is suggestive of when the Glazers Out movement sparked off again, following the backlash of the European Super League debacle.

It appears to follow that timeline of events so the Glazers have finally had the type of reaction they would have liked.

Whether the trajectory will remain going upwards remains to be seen but all fans will truly care about is Ronaldo’s impact on the pitch.

It will be equally as interesting to see how Solskjaer plans on using him, especially with the depth of attacking talents at his disposal.

Promising young defender signs first professional contract for United

Promising young defender, Tara Bourne has signed her first professional deal with Manchester United.

The 18 year old who was part of the under-21 WSL Academy side, stepped up to the first team last season.

She made her debut against Burnley in the FA Cup where United won 6-0.

Bourne will now join FA Women’s Championship side Sheffield United on a season long loan deal for the 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking on Manchester United’s official website Bourne said, “To sign my first professional contract at a club like Manchester United is something myself and my family are immensely proud of and I can’t wait to continue my journey here.”

The youngster continued, “As a young player at the club, it’s so important to see the pathway to the first team and have those goals that you can reach. I want to thank the staff and players in both the Under-21s and first team and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Speaking about her loan spell she added, “I’m looking forward to being involved with Sheffield United for the new season, I am always learning and improving, and this experience will be no different for me.”

“I know they will be up there pushing with the top teams in the Championship and I can’t wait to get started.”

Goal keepers Emily Ramsey and Fran Bentley have also secured season long loan spells ahead of the campaign.

The championship season started this weekend with the WSL kicking off next weekend.

Manchester United will face Reading under the lights on Friday September 3rd at Leigh Sports Village.

Manchester United youngsters earn first win of the season against rivals - Match Report

Having lost their opening two matches, Manchester United’s u18s travelled to Leeds in search of their first win of the season.

The match kicked off at breakneck speed with new signing Ethan Ennis immediately going on a mazy run through the heart of the Leeds defence before sending his effort just over the bar.

Applying the pressure, it did not take long for United’s youngsters to take the lead.

A crunching tackle from Finley McAllister won possession in the midfield, allowing Kobbie Mainoo to charge forward and slip through Dan Gore who tucked home nicely into the bottom corner in the 13th minute.

Leeds looked to fight back though as they skilfully dribbled through the United backline before smashing an effort off the crossbar.

United capitalised on the miss and went up the other end where Sam Mather finished off some fabulous team passing play to double the lead.

The action was back and forth though as Leeds forced two wonder saves from Eric Hanbury before the close of the first half.

Mather almost put the match out of reach early in the second half but his attempt was cleared off the line.

After more end to end play, United looked to have won a penalty in the 55th minute but the ref judged it to be just outside the area.

United started to gain control of the midfield in the latter stages of the match and slowed the tempo down nullifying Leeds attacking threat from breaks.

The match was capped off deep into injury time when Mainoo got the goal he deserved after slotting a rebound into an open net after Manni Norkett’s effort was saved.

United: Hanbury; Jurado, Bennett (Aljofree 71), Fredericson, Murray; Mainoo, McAllister; Ennis (Oyedele 46), Gore (Nolan 69), Mather; Norkett.

Turning down offers: World-class United star tells agent to sort out departure

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has reportedly finally settled on a decision to leave to Real Madrid, in the latest twist on his future.

The World Cup winner has long been linked with a move to the Spanish giants, particularly when Zinedine Zidane was in charge.

It was believed Pogba’s idol was the former Madrid man himself and so there was a dream that needed to be realised.

However, after Zidane left, links with the La Liga side died down, and instead, PSG and Juventus came into the equation instead.

Unfortunately, there’s only been a negative update in regards to the former academy graduate’s plans for the future.

According to Marca, Pogba wants to do what PSG’s Kylian Mbappe is doing, turning down all offers for renewals or other deals in order to secure a move to Real Madrid.

It’s understood he’s reluctant to extend his contract and has even told his agent Mino Raiola: “I want to play for Real Madrid.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford hasn’t changed the sensational Frenchman’s mind and he’s willing to wait it all out to get his dream move.

The Peoples Person last covered Pogba news when a report emerged claiming PSG wanted to sign him as well as Rennes’ Eduardo Camavinga.

The Red Devils star is out of contract next summer and so can join Madrid for free if he chooses to wait.

Carlo Ancelotti currently has to rely on the aging pair of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in midfield and so could do with Pogba’s added quality.

Manchester United are said to be willing to risk losing him for free and are not open to selling him no matter the circumstances.

Last-minute change of heart as United pull out of major deal for defender - Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United will keep Diogo Dalot at Old Trafford this summer and will not make any latch-ditch attempt to sign Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Despite reports that United have struck a deal with Borussia Dortmund to take Dalot on loan with an obligation to buy, Romano says the defender is set to stay at Old Trafford.

Just an hour ago, Sky Sport Germany’s Max Bielefeld tweeted:

Breakthrough in the negotiations between Dortmund and Man United for a transfer of Diogo Dalot!

Both clubs agreed on loan plus obligation to buy yesterday.

Deal is not done though! United need a replacement in before letting Dalot go 4 days left

However, Romano completely contradicted him within 15 minutes, saying:

‘Manchester United have made a final decision: Diogo Dalot will stay. He’s non-transferrable. Club and Solskjaer are very happy with Dalot, they trust him for present and future so he’s NOT leaving.

‘Borussia Dortmund approached Man Utd as many other clubs but no way.’

It is quite a turn up for the books as it has looked for days as if Dalot was heading back out on loan, even though the Red Devils had not managed to secure a back-up right back for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Brandon Williams, another option, has already been loaned to Norwich City.

But Romano is clear, saying in the thread:

‘…and it means that unless there are unexpected proposals or moves, Kieran Trippier will not join Manchester United this summer. Atletico Madrid were always asking €40m price tag – it’s never been really “close”.’

4-3-3: United will tear Wolves to shreds with this brilliant line-up

With a dearth of options in midfield and a wealth in attack, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could use tomorrow’s match against Wolves at Molyneux to introduce his more attacking 4-3-3 formation.

Last week’s double pivot of Nemanja Matic and Fred did not perform well and with Scott McTominay having had surgery this week that rules him out, the best plan may be to throw caution to the wind and leave just one defensive option – probably Fred – in front of the defence.

For this to work, the defence will need to be able to play higher up the pitch which in turn should mean that Raphael Varane will make his long-awaited debut, as he has the pace and passing ability that are not in Victor Lindelof’s arsenal.

Paul Pogba could retain his place on the left wing with Donny van de Beek coming into midfield between Fred and Bruno Fernandes, but this will depend on the fitness and readiness of Edinson Cavani.

Mason Greenwood’s scintillating form must command a start, so if Cavani plays up front it could see Greenwood fall back to the right wing and Jadon Sancho make his first start on the left side, with Pogba operating between Fred and Bruno.

If Solskjaer persists with a more defensive formation, Varane might have to wait again for his debut, Paul Pogba might be moved into a quarter-back role alongside Fred or Matic and Sancho and Greenwood would occupy the wings.

Anthony Martial will surely drop back to the bench after another poor performance at Southampton and Marcus Rashford, whilst back in training, is not close to being fit enough to take part.

Similarly, David de Gea will continue in goal as Solskjaer has confirmed that Dean Henderson is not yet ready to resume his duties.

Solskjaer was once again talking up Jesse Lingard at the pre-match press conference so he might spring a surprise and find a place for the England man somewhere in the forward positions. Likewise Dan James often pops up in a Solskjaer line-up when you least expect him.

But in all likelihood, we think the starting XI will look much like this:

How United could line up with Ronaldo, Bruno, Sancho and Varane

Yesterday United announced the earth-shattering return of a certain Portuguese winger famed for lighting up Old Trafford.

It may be 12 years since Cristiano Ronaldo last donned the famous red of Manchester United, but the 36-year-old now returns as one of the greatest footballers to ever grace the game.

After it appeared bitter rivals Manchester City were leading the race, things developed very quickly before United announced an agreement had been reached with Juventus.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had the following to say about his latest addition in his pre-Wolves press conference:

“Cristiano has been a legend of this club, he is a legend of this club, he’s the greatest player of all time if you ask me. I was fortunate enough to play with him, I coached him.

“Such a tremendous human being as well so let’s see what happens with Cristiano, everyone who’s played with him has a soft spot for him.”

Described by United god Sir Alex Ferguson as “The most gifted player I managed”, Ronaldo is loved on the red side of Manchester like few others before him.

So how could United lineup with the of their legendary number seven?

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is likely to occupy the central striker role having slowly transitioned from a flashy winger to an out and out striker at Real Madrid and Juventus.

While the move could spell the end of Anthony Martial’s Man United tenure and will likely see Edinson Cavani’s game time plummet, this move could be superb for the development of United’s young attackers, namely Mason Greenwood.

The young striker has been in blistering form so far this season, netting two goals in two games and learning from the game’s greatest ever goal scorer can only benefit him, while in the short term it may mean more time spent on the wing.

United’s forward options now look extremely dangerous with Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford options on the left, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood deputising on the right and Bruno Fernandes just behind the striker.

The midfield still remains a problem, with the much criticised McFred partnership (Scott McTominay and Fred) likely to be the go-to duo in the pivot.

Nemanja Matic doesn’t have the legs to be relied on over the course of a full campaign and Donny Van de Beek doesn’t seem to be trusted by Solskjaer despite many fans believing he deserves much more opportunities to play.

A defence of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka with one of David De Gea or Dean Henderson picks itself and could be one of the better defensive units in Europe.

With a supporting cast including Jesse Lingard, Dan James, Juan Mata, Alex Telles and Victor Lindelof, the strength in depth now looks scary and means a trophy this season is a must for the Red Devils.

This is how United’s best XI could look with Ronaldo in the side:

CR7: a blow-by-blow account of how the world's most sensational transfer swoop unfolded

As the dust settles after what was a meteoric day in Manchester United’s transfer history, the papers have unearthed some interesting facts about how the deal unfolded.

‘Even by the standards of football transfers, which often defy all rational thought, this was a headspinning 24 hours,’ writes The Telegraph’s Jason Burt.

‘The momentum had begun to swing towards United late on Thursday evening, when a charm offensive started with Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo’s Portuguese international teammate, calling him to ascertain whether he really was intent on joining Manchester City.

‘Those calls and WhatsApp messages continued with United sources not playing down suggestions that even Sir Alex Ferguson may have intervened, on Friday morning, to help ensure Ronaldo would finally return after 12 years away.

‘Former teammates such as Rio Ferdinand also contacted Ronaldo and in those conversations there was a mixture of playing on his emotions and also sharply reminding him that his amazing legacy at Old Trafford would be damaged should he join the “noisy neighbours”.’

Burt also claims that while United believed he would always choose them over City, ‘For City there is a different version of events. It is undoubtedly true that they were offered the chance to sign Ronaldo and entered into talks with his agent, at the player’s behest, when their chances of getting Harry Kane finally ended.

‘They believe that Ronaldo was emphatic with them that he wanted to join City, that they were his first choice and that he had no qualms about doing so despite his United connection.’

The Times reports things rather differently.

‘City had told Ronaldo this week that they were interested in signing him but asked him to delay making a decision about his future while they worked out how to structure the deal. It is understood that City would have had to sell a player before they could sign Ronaldo.

‘United took advantage of the delay, with Sir Alex Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand and Bruno Fernandes calling the forward over the course of Thursday evening and yesterday morning to try to persuade the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to return to Old Trafford, where he played from 2003 to 2009, before he agreed to the move.’

Ronaldo at City would certainly have been a difficult pill to swallow for United fans and would almost certainly have made them even stronger favourites for the title.

Whether City will make a final attempt to sign Harry Kane or another world-class striker remains to be seen, but with just three days left of the transfer window, it would appear they will be going into the new season without having replaced Sergio Aguero while United now have one of the most exciting forward lines ever to be assembled.

'Performed perfectly'- Man United great breaks down how stunning Ronaldo move happened

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has broken down how the stunning Cristiano Ronaldo move happened, step by step, and what his role was in the transfer.

The world-class attacker was suddenly available, with videos emerging of him apparently saying goodbye to his Juventus teammates in training.

Many anticipated his move to Manchester City must have been inevitable at that point as they were the only frontrunners for his signature.

United fans couldn’t stomach the idea and luckily they didn’t have to as their club moved swiftly to ensure the nightmare doesn’t become a reality.

Ferdinand teased supporters prior to the official announcement, posting a video of himself smiling, and he’s now explained why.

The Peoples Person last covered Ronaldo news when fans were totally in shock, reacting to the fact he was set for a return to Old Trafford.

The overall response has been positive but there are some who question what their former star can still provide and whether investing in him was a smart idea.

The onus will be on Ronaldo to prove his doubters wrong but this wouldn’t be the first time he’s done it and this time around he’ll be wearing red.

Pictures: United stars light up social media with welcome messages for Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United players and former players have taken to social media to celebrate the news that Cristiano Ronaldo is re-joining the club.

The world’s best footballer is set to sign for the side that he left 12 years ago in 2009 to join Real Madrid, subject to medical and agreement of personal terms.

And although he is now 36 years of age, his physical condition allows him to continue at the top level.

Ronaldo scored 36 goals for Juventus in all competitions last season, six more than Chelsea’s new £97 million signing, Romelu Lukaku.

Bruno Fernandes, who according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been in constant contact with his countryman, put a cartoon on instagram with the caption ‘Never stop dreaming. Welcome back home @cristiano.’

Juan Mata whimsically tweeted ‘Wondering why my phone is full of messages from people that haven’t texted me in years… oh wait.’

Raphael Varane posted photos of himself with the Portuguese legend simply with two red circles:

Marcus Rashford also took to Twitter, saying ‘Wow wow wow, he’s home.’

Jesse Lingard tweeted ‘Viva Ronaldooooooo’.

Among former players, Gary Neville posted a photo of Ronaldo playing against Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher, with the cheeky caption ‘Welcome Back @cristiano. The quality of defenders have improved but so have you.’

Peter Schmeichel tweeted a photo of himself with champagne with the caption ‘HE IS COMING HOME! Back where you belong @Cristiano.’

Roy Keane posted ‘Welcome back Cristiano’ on Instagram.

‘Out of order’: Furious Solskjaer launches incredible attack on former teammate

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has launched a stinging rebuke of Rio Ferdinand’s recent criticism of Phil Jones.

As covered by The Peoples Person, Ferdinand recently derided Jones’ injury record and even suggested the defender was taking up a youth place in the current squad.

However, Solskjaer today used his pre-match press conference to lambast his former colleague and launch a passionate defence of the luckless centre-back.

As covered on the official United site, he said, “I think Rio was a bit, not out of order, but a bit unlucky. He should have called me and asked why Phil Jones hasn’t played…

“I think that was out of order completely…Since I came here he’s battled with this knee injury, he’s put his body on the line, every single training session, every single game…

“Rio should know more than to go out and say this. I’ve wanted to say a lot but I’ve not said a lot about Phil’s injury because I’ve wanted to protect him.

“Phil’s never on social media, never asked to do interviews, he just gets his head down, proper, proper professional…”

On the defender’s prospects of a return to fitness, the Norwegian continued, “He’s working his way…Phil has battled valiantly, I’d say…and he’s now getting back to fitness…there can be a light at the end of the tunnel…

“I think Rio knows, I think he feels a little bit sorry about that one. I’ve not spoken to Rio but I think he should.”

It’s clear from the tone and content of Solskjaer’s diatribe that he strongly believes Ferdinand crossed a line with his comments.

Although the former United centre-back was widely seen as airing opinions that have been commonly shared by much of the United fan base, he’s clearly touched a nerve with his old teammate.

It’s to be hoped that Jones can justify his manager’s admirable optimism by returning to the spotlight as a result of performances rather than his ongoing absences.

Mother of all homecomings: Fans go wild as news breaks that United have signed Ronaldo

Manchester United fans have begun to react to the news that Christiano Ronaldo has dropped out of a move to derby rivals City and has been confirmed to be returning to the red side of Manchester.

Fans took to social media last night begging Ronaldo not to ruin his legacy by joining the Blues with many wondering if Sir Alex Ferguson might get involved at a personal level.

In the last 24 hours the tables have turned drastically with the club now confirming that a deal has been reached subject to personal terms and a medical.

Social media is buzzing at the news with the majority of fans ecstatic by the news.

“Come to united, please, it’s your home” one fan begged.

“The boy is coming home!” another exclaimed.

“That would be the mother of all homecomings if they get it over the line ahead of City.”

“Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo is the type of transfer window you’d see on a United career mode and then complain it isn’t realistic.”

“One last dance, here we go CR7!”

The majority of comments have welcomed the striker home but others expressed concern about his age and our stacked attacking line up.

“I wonder what his (Ronaldo) return will mean for Cavani, Greenwood, Rashford” one fan pondered.

Others saw it as an opportunity for the younger members to learn off the best, “Greenwood, Rashford and Sancho are all going to learn so much from Cristiano Ronaldo. CRAZY TIMES!!!!”

The five time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to complete the deal within the next 24 hours.

Ronaldo looked set to join neighbours Manchester City from Juventus today but a last minute move by United has snatched their former idol and the world’s greatest footballer from under their neighbours’ noses.

CR7 is believed to have joined United on a 2-year deal worth £480,000 per week subject to a medical being carried out in Lisbon this afternoon.

United have confirmed the deal has been reached, saying:

‘Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical.

‘Cristiano, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has so far won over 30 major trophies during his career, including five UEFA Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, seven league titles in England, Spain and Italy, and the European Championship for his native Portugal.

‘In his first spell for Manchester United, he scored 118 goals in 292 games.

Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.’

The deal agreed with Juventus is believed to be in the region of €15 million plus add-ons of €8 million, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Bruno Fernandes and other players are believed to have put pressure on both the club to make the deal and on Ronaldo to push for a return to Old Trafford.

Fernandes is even reported to have offered to let Cristiano take over penalty duties.
