Huge blow for Ten Hag with key target now "untransferable"

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is no longer available for transfer from the Spanish giants.

As reported in Spanish media outlet SPORT, De Jong is now seen as “untransferable”, after coming close to leaving the Catalan club in the summer.

The Dutchman looked a certainty to depart Barcelona to link up with former coach Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, with the Barca hierarchy happy to let the player leave.

But after weeks and weeks of negotiations, the transfer fell through with the issue of De Jong’s deferred wages owed from the COVID-19 period, cited as the reason for the deal collapsing.

After a sticky start to the season, which included either not playing or filling in at centre-half, De Jong now looks set to stay at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona manager Xavi has recently found a place for De Jong in his midfield and sees the Dutchman as the long-term successor to club captain, Sergio Busquets.

The financial situation is still unclear at Barca with the deployment of the Dutch international in the Busquet’s role designed to save them going into the market to replace the outgoing star.

After missing out on De Jong, United have played Christian Eriksen in the heart of their midfield, with the Dane impressing in the majority of his outings.

However, Ten Hag remains a keen admirer of De Jong and it’s easy to see how the 25-year-old would slot into the side at Old Trafford.

It’s unknown if Ten Hag has given up on signing the player but the news coming out of the Camp Nou that he is now not for sale will serve as a blow.

Any approach will be on hold until the end of the season, with United’s eyes firmly fixed on replacing Cristiano Ronaldo in the January window.

Ten Hag’s men are currently enjoying a fine run of form with the FA Cup win over Everton last night stretching their winning run to 7 games, in all competitions.

Next up, United will be aiming to reach the EFL Cup semi-final in their next outing against Charlton, before the massive Premier League double header against Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively.

Atletico Madrid soften Joao Felix stance as United edge closer to January deal

Manchester United have established communication with super agent Jorge Mendes about the possibility of signing his client, Joao Felix.

Over recent weeks, Felix has emerged as a legitimate target for the Red Devils who are in dire need of an attacker after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit.

Felix’s tumultuous situation at the Wanda Metropolitano has given United a massive opportunity. The player has made it clear that he wishes to leave Spain as soon as possible, with United being mooted as a possible destination.

It was recently reported that tensions between Felix and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is at an all-time high with the player desperately trying to force a move away.

Atletico have demanded a steep €12m loan fee, which is three times higher than what United are willing to part with.

The Spanish club are also adamant that whoever takes the Portuguese must pay his wages in full throughout the duration of his loan spell.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have expressed their interest and admiration for Felix to Mendes.

Romano says, “Manchester United have confirmed to Jorge Mendes that they really like Joao Felix and want him.”

“Both Arsenal and Manchester United have confirmed their interest in the last few hours & days. Mendes is talking to Atletico about the loan fee.”

United have seemingly stepped up their efforts, something that has been reiterated by CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs relays that Erik ten Hag is an avid fan of Felix and if possible wants to add him to the ranks at Old Trafford.

Jacobs also indicates, “Atletico Madrid are hoping to get Felix’s wages off the books and could be willing to entertain offers with a reduced future fee or initial loan outlay if clubs commit to covering 100% of the forward’s salary.”

Jacob’s report if true, is undoubtedly a positive development for the Red Devils in their pursuit of Felix.

Awkward: United star's deleted Twitter post goes viral for all the wrong reasons

Manchester United have acted quickly and have officially signed their first player of the January transfer window.

Jack Butland arrives from Crystal Palace on a six-month loan deal and has revealed his ambitions behind the move after signing on the dotted lines.

“I’ve played against David De Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class keepers, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates.

“There is a lot that this group can achieve this season and I’m excited to play my part in helping everyone to reach these ambitions.”

Butland’s gaffe

But with the advent of social media, nothing goes hidden and the 29-year-old was forced to delete a tweet dating back to 2017.

The former Stoke City goalkeeper had revealed his dream of playing for United and when a fan had asked whether he would be willing to move to Old Trafford as an understudy to David de Gea, Butland had said, “Would never move to be a number 2!”

It is funny how time works as the England international has done just that. But he will be eager to work hard and try and gain some minutes representing the first-team, something not many players can boast of.

His confidence will also be sky-high after The Athletic revealed that he was indeed the first-choice backup keeper for the club in the summer..

“The 29-year-old’s switch comes six months after scouts identified him as their first-choice backup goalkeeper to David De Gea.

“A move was imminent until Butland had his hand broken when saving an Anthony Martial shot in Melbourne during a pre-season game.”

Confidence will be high

That led to the Red Devils scrambling to find a replacement with Martin Dubravka eventually arriving at Old Trafford from Newcastle United.

But after Newcastle recalled Dubravka, Butland finally got his chance.

Having not played a single game so far this season for the Eagles, the Englishman will be hoping that he can impress Erik ten Hag sufficiently to earn some much-needed game-time.

His contract with the London club is set to end in six months with the Eagles having the option of extending it by a year.

There is also a chance that Butland can earn a permanent United contract if he impresses the Dutch manager.

These five strikers could be the antidote to Ten Hag's goal-shy team - opinion

With £24 million available in the bank yet desperate to buy a centre forward, United need to act shrewdly in the winter transfer window – and time is not exactly on their side with less than four weeks to act.

Erik ten Hag has made it abundantly clear that, of course, he wants a leading man – but only the right one. Scouring the depths of world football for “the right striker” with a limited budget, preference for a loan move, and philosophy to try and instil, is not an easy feat, however.

So, to help John Murtough out, here is a five-man shortlist of affordable top-class strikers who could help United see out a goal-shy season.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

The former Stoke City striker has shocked people with his prowess in the red shirt of European giants Bayern Munich this season.

Although not his first foray for a major Champions League side, this is his first season as a recognised starter. For Paris Saint-Germain, Choupo-Moting was a quintessential role player.

11 goals in all competitions for Bayern, alongside his outstanding all-round-play metrics, make the Cameroon international a leading option for Erik ten Hag in his quest to find a striker for Manchester United.

And with six months left on his contract, now would be the opportune moment to poach him from Julian Nagelsmann.

Youssoufa Moukoko

A similar case to Choupo-Moting, but 15 years his junior, Youssoufa Moukoko has lit up the Black and Yellow shirt of Borussia Dortmund in his breakthrough season.

With six goals already to his name in the Bundesliga this year at 18 years old, Moukoko is not only a promising striking prospect, but already delivering. With such, a transfer saga is already developing for the young Germany international.

If United are to break the trend of purchasing older or extortionate centre forwards then Moukoko is the ideal candidate – the 18 year old has just refused a contract extension with Dortmund and has a fast-approaching expiry date in June.

Terem Moffi

Not so much a left-field shout when context is considered. Terem Moffi is one of the top scorers in Ligue 1 this season with 10 goals to his name.

Lorient’s no. 9 has been a revelation for them this season and has them contesting for a European spot in the table.

With a contract expiring next year and a not-so-showbizzy name, Moffi would be a safe option in that his valuation is currently €15 million. Furthermore, at 23 years old, Moffi is an investment for the future rather than simply a quick-fix solution.

Fitting Glazernomics, a clinical goalscorer, and dogged in defensive work: why would Ten Hag not want United to take the risk?

Olivier Giroud

Experienced in the Premier League; World Cup winner; a young superstar like Kylian Mbappé loves to play alongside him; still important for Milan; consistent; rarely injured; an out-and-out no. 9; six months left on his current contract.

Olivier Giroud has emerged as a target for Manchester United in recent days because of the aforementioned pros.

Some fans have scoffed at such a link, but with experience and nous, what’s not to like?

Giroud could just be the Henrik Larsson 2.0 signing that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hoping Odion Ighalo would be.

M’Bala Nzola

The Angola international has quietly become a ruthless Serie A striker this season having scored 8 goals already.

A handful for defenders, composed, and quick to get the shot away, Nzola would present himself as the centre forward United have been needing for years.

His current valuation sits at a measly €3.5 million. Adding United tax may raise the valuation quite considerably, it must be said. But to offer a paid loan may be a resolution, and with such Ten Hag could be gifted someone to stand up top, bustle defenders around, and perform clinically in front of goal.

“One of the best”: manager lauds United loanee despite injury issues

When Erik ten Hag took over as the new Manchester United manager, he had a bloated squad with many positions requiring an influx of quality while a handful of players needed shipping.

The Dutchman did it tactfully, allowing all his players a fair chance to impress before he took a call. Five permanent signings were made in the summer transfer window to plug multiple gaps in the squad.

Post pre-season, the Dutch boss decided to allow certain players, who were surplus to requirements, to leave.

Eric Bailly‘s injury woes

Among those players was fan-favourite Eric Bailly, who sealed a loan move to Marseille, with the French club having the option of making the move permanent.

His defensive qualities were never in doubt, but his poor injury-record meant he never could play regularly and build momentum.

And those problems have resurfaced even during his stint at the French giants, with the Ivory Coast international missing six games out of 20 due to injury while having to remain on the bench for a further three games.

At this rate, it does not look likely that the former Villareal man can fulfill the quota of playing more than 50% of games for his new club.

According to La Provence (via Sport Witness), Bailly was put on a specific training plan during the World Cup break in a bid to ensure his injury problems did not return in the second-half of the season.

His former Ivory Coast manager Patrice Beaumelle has since revealed that if injury-free, the United loanee can become the world’s best defender.

Bailly’s new fitness routine could pay dividends

“If he isn’t bothered by muscular issues, he is, for me, one of the best defenders in the world. An exceptional player.

“He showcases a monstrous power, an ease, he’s really quick, he’s hard in the challenge, always in the right place. He has everything.

“However, he’s always bothered by these little issues and everyone is reserved about him. We know he has everything, but we want to see it. If he manages to play a month non-stop, we’ll be able to see him at his highest level.”

For United’s sake, they will be hoping that Bailly can remain injury-free as if he plays a certain number of games, his buy clause will automatically be triggered and United can receive a decent transfer fee.

While fans were sad to see him go initially, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane taking charge of the defence, the Red Devils are in a much better position as compared to previous seasons.

Top journalist claims Erik ten Hag "likely to" sign goalkeeper for free this summer

Jack Butland could join Manchester United for free after his loan spell and contract with Crystal Palace both expire.

Erik ten Hag needed to find a replacement for Martin Dubravka after Newcastle terminated his loan at the start of the month.

Otherwise, he would’ve been left with just David de Gea and Tom Heaton, who hasn’t played a lot in recent seasons.

It would have been a risk on the manager’s part not to sign a backup goalkeeper or loan a goalkeeper from another club.

Now it has been confirmed that Butland will arrive at the club on loan from Crystal Palace, fans are starting to speculate just for how long this could be.

Rob Blanchette reports on Twitter that his contract with Palace is actually expiring at the end of the season.

He said in a tweet “Jack Butland will be out of contract with Palace at the end of his #MUFC loan spell, making him a free agent.”

“If he does well, Ten Hag will likely offer him a permanent contract.”

“Looks highly likely De Gea will stay on a reduced wage as No. 1 choice. ETH has huge faith in him.”

With Man United still in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, which the club enters tonight, it’s clear to see that there will be plenty of games in which Butland can contribute.

This would have been the plan with Dubravka but after his loan was cut short, the manager had to react to the situation.

Tom Heaton could have been the backup option and has great experience in the Premier League if need be.

However,Butland’s arrival will mean the pecking order changes once more with the 29-year-old becoming the backup to De Gea.

At Crystal Palace, he was seen as the third-choice goalkeeper after the arrival of Sam Johnstone in the summer.

United have a quality backup goalkeeper on their hands and will be hoping they can secure him on a free transfer this summer to save having to search for another goalkeeper.

Romano reveals what happened in Gakpo deal and what’s next for United

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that despite Manchester United’s interest in Cody Gakpo, his transfer to Premier League rivals Liverpool can be no real surprise.

Gakpo was one of the bright young talents of the World Cup, and United’s interest in the Netherlands forward was rumoured long before he headed to Qatar in November.

But in his Daily Briefing column at Caughtoffside.com, Romano voiced his opinion on just why the deal didn’t come off for Erik ten Hag.

Despite tracking the former PSV Eindhoven player since his days at Eredivisie rivals Ajax, United and Ten Hag never actually submitted an offer for the Holland star.

And following his €42 million move to Liverpool, United have been left with no choice but to find a stop-gap striker in the January transfer window.

While rumours abound about who that might be, Gakpo is already settled in and ready to start firing at Anfield.

Although Ten Hag and United coveted the 23-year-old for some time, Romano quashed the idea that Liverpool stole him from under the noses of the Old Trafford side.

“Manchester United started a dialogue on the player’s side to get a full buy-in. Beyond that, however, they didn’t do much – Ten Hag would’ve liked Gakpo, but United didn’t move”, says Romano.

“This either means they were too slow, or, more likely, the ownership weren’t ready to move because they don’t want to spend too big in January, because there is the feeling that a new owner could be ready to invest soon, in early 2023”, he added, pointing out that the Glazer family are still hoping a full sale of the club is imminent.

With the quick movement by Liverpool to secure a deal, Romano likens the business to that of Darwin Nuñez in the summer, another striker United were heavily linked with, highlighting the disjoint between the coach and his board.

But the word out of Old Trafford is that their Dutch coach wants a more traditional number 9, and United have since been linked to a host of strikers including French duo Randal Kolo Mauni and Marcus Thuram.

Despite this, United have most heavily been linked with wantaway Atletico Madrid star, Joao Félix, who is available on loan until the end of the season.

“In the context of Joao Felix, we wait and see – United want someone who can weigh in with goals and assists, so it’s just about if they want someone like that and a traditional number 9, or just a traditional number 9”, Romano said.

“Still, for all the talk and excitement of the transfer window, and the good form in what feels like a new era under Ten Hag, there remains an issue with big players. United are a bit hamstrung by the likely change of ownership and by not being in the Champions League this season. I wouldn’t be too surprised if these issues mean that a loan deal is more likely than any permanent deal” Romano concludes.

All of this leaves fans of the Old Trafford side wondering, will Ten Hag rely upon his current squad depth to endure Champions League qualification this year or will he push to force the club’s hand into ensuring they bring in the man he wants.

Rivals' failure to agree fee for World Cup winner is good news for United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is a perfectionist and he constantly wants to improve so it is no surprise to find out that he wants to upgrade his midfield next summer.

This despite the fact that United spent huge money to bring in Casemiro from Real Madrid while also agreeing a deal with Christian Eriksen.

Both have become the go-to pair in the middle of the park and their performances have elevated United to fourth with a game in hand over Newcastle, currently in third and level on points.

Midfield upgrade on ETH’s mind

It has been all over the news that Argentina’s World Cup-winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez is one of the Dutchman’s preferred targets.

While initially it was reported that a January deal could be agreed upon, but the club’s finances being a mess currently means only loan deals are what United have to work with.

In the last couple of days, Chelsea seem to have stolen a march over United in the chase for the Benfica ace’s signature.

Reports had even emerged that the Blues had even agreed to pay €85million for the 21-year-old’s services.

But Benfica president Rui Costa has always been adamant that only paying the full release clause of €120million would see Fernandez leave Lisbon.

As transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has pointed out, no further talks are scheduled between the two clubs after Chelsea’s stance was met with a negative response.

“There are no talks currently scheduled for Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea and Benfica did not reach an agreement, with Rui Costa demanding the €120m release clause to be paid in full,” Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside Substack column.

Chelsea deal failing is good news for United

Benfica coach Roger Schmidt has come out and slammed Chelsea’s approach and termed it disrespectful. The player is also said to be losing focus after Chelsea’s approach.

“There is a club that wants him, they tried to attract him, but they know that they can only have him if they pay the clause.

“It’s disrespectful to all of us, to Benfica, they’re driving the player crazy, they pretend they want to pay the clause and then they want to negotiate.”

If the deal does fall through, United will have the chance to regroup under potentially new owners and try and steal a deal next summer.

Erik ten Hag confirms PL star joining United and says he is looking for more

Erik ten Hag says he still is hoping for transfers despite being on the point of making their first loan signing of the window.

Speaking at the pre-match conference ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup 3rd round clash with Everton tomorrow, the manager confirmed that Jack Butland would be joining the club.

“Martin [Dubravka] was recalled and in our squad we need a setup with three goalkeepers,” he said.

“For in the training and also when there are problems.

“What he’s [Butland] bringing, I’m really happy with David, it’s quite clear, he’s our No.1, he’s a really good performer, but there’s always something that can happen with David as well, and you have to be prepared for that, so you don’t have one.”

The manager also confirmed that further signings were being sought.

“We always have to look for that. As we push the players and we also have to push the organisation. When there are opportunities in the top, you always have to be ready for that. Our focus is always to improve the team.”

In the short presser Ten Hag also spoke of the importance of the FA Cup, saying:

“For me the cup is always special, I know in England FA Cup is even more higher expectations, higher standards than in the Netherlands, but I like the cup in the Netherlands as well, it’s a different league.

“In not so many games you can achieve a lot, and you have to come away a winner, this is possible if you draw a replay but then after two it’s a knockout and I like that.”

Something lost in translation there but we get your drift, Erik.

The boss was not asked about Donny van de Beek‘s injury, that experts say could be a long term one.

Antony’s fitness was also not discussed although he was spotted in training today so is expected to be available tomorrow.

Is this 'struggling striker' really the answer to United's forward crisis?

As rumours swirl around the future of Memphis Depay, his time at Barcelona is becoming more and more untenable according to reports.

According to AS his performance in the Copa del Rey this week was so poor that he is set to be sidelined for Barcelona’s next game against Atletico Madrid.

The club are not happy with Depay’s efficiency in front of goal, scoring just once in the last fifteen games.

Plenty of chances have been created for Depay and Ferran, another forward out of favour; 21 opportunities against Espanyol with just the one goal scored and 29 against Intercity with four goals scored. The conversion rate is just simply not good enough.

The club is having to rely on Robert Lewandowski for much of their joy up front.

However, the Polish international is now ruled out due to a suspension for three games.

Despite this, reports suggest they will look elsewhere in their attacking line up as opposed to calling upon Depay and Ferran.

The fact Depay is struggling at Barca could be a positive indication for United who are said to have been in talks with Depay since the summer.

On the other hand, a forward that lacks efficiency in front of goal is of no use to anyone and not what Manchester United had bargained for.

Erik ten Hag has spoken of the need to strengthen up front given that his side holds the record of being the second-lowest goalscorers in the top-half of the Premier League table.

But if Depay is out of form and struggling in front of goal, how can he possibly solve United’s problems?

Depay is said to be the one who initiated talks back in the summer having previously enjoyed his time with the Reds between 2015-1, where he made 33 appearances and scored two goals under Louis Van Gaal.

Ten Hag could be reunited with dazzling forward as club explores potential loan

Manchester United are interested in Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo in November.

Erik ten Hag’s priority for the January transfer window is to find a backup to David de Gea and a striker to help rotate with Anthony Martial.

In terms of the former, Jack Butland is expected to replace Martin Dubravka on a six-month loan deal.

The manager is still searching for a forward after Cody Gakpo’s disappointing transfer to rivals Liverpool.

According to 90min, Ten Hag and United are exploring a deal for Ajax forward Kudus.

After an impressive World Cup campaign, scoring two goals in Ghana’s match vs. South Korea, the 22-year-old has attracted interest from across Europe.

The Dutch manager hasn’t hidden the fact that a goalscorer is needed and this rumour seems to offer the perfect option.

Kudus was signed by Ten Hag for Ajax in 2020 and was used as a squad option from the bench in the majority of games.

A similar role could be on offerat United if Martial continues his current form and contributions to matches.

This season, he has scored 10 goals, which is more than he has scored in previous campaigns.

The outlet reports that no offer has yet been made despite the club exploring this deal as they look to secure a new striker.

In recent weeks, the financial situation has played a huge part in the type of signing that United can make.

Gakpo’s price tag was something the club couldn’t reach with rumoured target Gonçalo Ramos also having a hefty asking price.

United are exploring the loan market in this transfer window with it expected that any deal with Kudus will be a loan with a buy option attached to the deal.

Memphis Depay, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Olivier Giroud are also being considered to replace Ronaldo.

United have a busy couple of weeks ahead of them meaning Ten Hag will be wanting to have quality options available going into tougher fixtures.

Bayern Munich poised to sign former United fan favourite in shock deal

Daley Blind is close to finalising a surprise move to Bayern Munich after his recent departure from Ajax.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed the signing on his Twitter page this morning.

Pending a medical, Blind will join Bayern on a contract until the summer with an option to extend for another year.

It looks like a fantastic move for the former United player, with Bayern on course for another Bundesliga tite and one of the front runners for this year’s Champions League.

Blind joined United in the summer of 2014 as part of a raft of signings by then manager, Louis van Gaal.

The versatile Blind played 141 times for the club, scoring six goals during his four season stay at Old Trafford.

His classy attitude on and off the pitch has left fond memories for United fans, one of only a few signings who can say that over the last decade.

Blind formed a solid partnership with Chris Smalling at the heart of Van Gaal’s defence, a partnership which led united to FA Cup glory in 2016 after beating Crystal Palace in the final at Wembley.

Despite the FA Cup success, Van Gaal was relieved of his duties that summer, with Jose Mourinho replacing the Dutchman as manager of the club.

Mourinho’s style of play didn’t quite align with Blind’s qualities, which led to him leaving Manchester to return to Ajax in 2018.

At the end of 2019, Blind was diagnosed with myocarditis and revealed he had been fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

Four years on, it’s a testament to Blind’s professionalism and desire that he is still playing football at the top level.

All United fans will wish the Dutchman all the best in the next chapter of his career.

Fabrizio Romano provides important update on Aaron Wan-Bissaka's future

Manchester United’s plans for the right-back position have not changed even despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s resurgence in a red shirt.

Since club football returned, Wan-Bissaka has slotted in for the injured Diogo Dalot and played well in all of United’s games.

United are still yet to concede a goal.

Wan-Bissaka has displayed significant improvement, something that Erik ten Hag himself has pointed out and hailed the player for.

Ten Hag remarked that Wan-Bissaka has been far better both defensively and offensively.

However, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano says that the plan is still to let Wan-Bissaka go but only if a suitable offer arrives.

The transfer expert reports, “There have been no major developments yet on Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future.

“Wolves, Crystal Palace and West Ham had talks to ask for information on the conditions of the deal in December, but it’s still early stages.”

“Man United will let him go if they receive a good proposal and if they find a good backup option for Diogo Dalot; at the moment, it hasn’t happened yet.”

Yesterday, it emerged that Wolves especially are keen on Wan-Bissaka with funds available to back Julen Lopetegui.

Ten Hag’s plans going forward will be significantly boosted by the fact that Dalot is back in action.

The Portuguese came on in the 3-0 win against Bournemouth and got some minutes under his belt. It’s likely that Dalot starts against Everton in the FA Cup with Premier League games against Arsenal and Manchester City on the horizon.

United have been linked with a number of right-backs. Some of these include Malo Gusto and Croatia’s Josip Juranovic.

World Cup hero high on United's priorities for summer switch

After Newcastle United recalled Martin Dubravka, Manchester United have further solidified their interest in signing Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou.

Now, Sport Witness claims that a move to Old Trafford for the Moroccan international has never been closer.

United have been interested in signing Bounou since his impressive performance in the Europa League in 2020.

Though the Reds were interested in signing him in the summer, Bounou signed a new deal that raised his release clause.

With Dubravka now back at Newcastle and both De Gea and Tom Heaton out of contract in the summer, United are keen to keep open the lines of communication with Bounou.

After a fabulous display between the sticks at the World Cup, helping his team to the semi-final, Bounou is said to be ‘an option they would consider’ when it comes to their new number one.

It’s unlikely a January transfer would happen since they can’t offer him a place in the starting line up just yet.

However, they are not the only side interested in the shot-stopper with Bayern Munich also on the hunt for a keeper.

Bounou signed for Sevilla in 2020 after spending a season on loan there.

Since then, he has played 77 times for the La Liga side who are currently down in 18th.

It was his performances in the Europa League in the 2019/20 season which helped to win the cup.

The Reds are said to be in contact with those closest to the shot-stopper and if a deal isn’t done in January it is likely talks will remain open with a view to signing him at the conclusion of the season.

However, breaking news this morning suggests that United are in talks with Jack Butland to join the Reds as a back-up keeper for the rest of the season.

If this happens it may put talks on hold with Bounou with a view to revisiting in the summer depending on the situation with De Gea and Heaton.

Fabrizio Romano provides key update on United’s Serie A striker raid

Manchester United’s pursuit of Olivier Giroud has suffered a significant blow.

Yesterday, it emerged that Giroud was on United’s radar as the club steps up its pursuit of a reliable striker to come in and lead the line.

Erik ten Hag has made no secret of his wish to acquire reinforcements going forward. Giroud was linked as a legitimate target in this respect.

It was indicated that while United are interested in France’s all-time top goalscorer, the player’s primary intention is to stay at the San Siro.

If the Serie A champions were satisfied with the 36-year-old and wanted to keep him, Giroud would stay.

Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on United’s interest in Giroud.

Romano relays, “Despite links with Manchester United, AC Milan can’t lose Olivier Giroud now.”

“It’s [losing Giroud to United] seen as impossible.”

“Giroud is expected to sign a new deal in the next weeks or months after a verbal agreement was reached in December.”

Beyond Giroud, the Red Devils are reported to have two other strikers on their list: Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram.

Romano indicated yesterday that United do indeed have Muani on their list but as in Giroud’s case with AC Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt are also hell-bent on keeping the player at least until the end of the season.

United were said to be preparing a January bid of up to €60m for Muani.

With regard to Thuram, Ten Hag is reportedly a fan and a contract proposal has already been made with United keen to ward off competition for his services.

Crucial few days could see sizzling United achieve the unthinkable

Manchester United’s comfortable victory over Bournemouth last night has left them in the box seat for Champions League qualification next season.

With teams around them all dropping points ove the New Year period, Ten Hag’s side have chalked up three straight victories to leave them five points clear of fifth place Tottenham and seven clear of Liverpool in sixth.

It has also catapulted United level on points with Newcastle in third, having played a game less and a point away from neighbours Manchester City in second, who travel to Chelsea tomorrow evening to play their game in hand.

If Chelsea were to take points from the Champions, the Manchester derby in 10 days time would give United a chance to leapfrog City into second.

The turnaround represents a minor miracle given United’s catastrophic start to the campaign and their 6-3 hammering in the first derby of the season back in early October.

Naturally, the optimism is approached with caution, given United’s fragility over recent years.

But this is a new United; solid, hard to beat and playing with a passion and commitment not seen at Old Trafford for too long to mention.

Erik ten Hag’s imprint is beginning to take hold; Casemiro has proved an inspired signing, Rapha Varane and Lisandro Martinez have forged an outstanding partnership at the heart of his defence and Marcus Rashford is flying up front.

The handling of the Cristiano Ronaldo circus gave Ten Hag an opportunity to set his stall out, no ill-discipline will be tolerated and the squad has responded. He is getting the big calls right.

Even the emergence and integration of Alejandro Granacho has papered over the Jadon Sancho sized crack as he continues to individually train an a bid to get back to full fitness.

Sancho could be like a new signing for the second half of the season if he hits the ground running on his return.

Ten Hag has expressed his desire for a centre forward in January to boost United’s finishing power in what he will hope to be a busy and exciting end to the season, with United fighting on four fronts.

A couple of domestic cup games stand between United and their litmus test next league fixtures; City at home and league leaders Arsenal, away.

Top four was and is still the objective but if Ten Hag is able to deliver positive results in those two mammoth matches, it will leave United fans daring to dream about a magical 2023.

Jorge Mendes "working on" sensational transfer deal for €75m United target

Manchester United are a potential destination for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Costa was strongly linked to United months ago before he signed a new longer-team deal with Porto. The goalkeeper’s release clause increased substantially as a result of him signing new terms.

However, United have still retained an interest in Costa, with there being doubts over David de Gea‘s suitability for an Erik ten Hag system.

Despite being the best in the business at shot-stopping, De Gea is seen by many as being severely limited in his distribution, playing with his feet and initiating sweeping actions.

These are all aspects of the game Costa excels at.

Costa’s reputation was enhanced by his impressive performances in the Champions League, where he has been one of the best goalkeepers in the competition.

Cm reports that the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes is working on a deal to bring his client to England during the summer.

“Jorge Mendes is already working towards putting him[Costa] in England for the 75 million euros clause [ in his new contract].”

“Jorge Mendes is already setting up an exit scenario at the end of the current season. Apparently, England will be the destination, with Manchester United emerging as a strong possibility.”

“However, the high release clause [75 million euros] keeps interested parties at a distance.”

The report however indicates that when Costa signed a new deal at the Estádio do Dragão, there was an agreement that he could leave for less than his release clause value.

Porto however are not obligated to adhere to this from a legal perspective, hence the involvement of Mendes to iron out the issue.

Bundesliga boss Farke speaks out about January exit of top United target

Manchester United will have to work hard to land transfer target Yann Sommer, with his manager insisting he is not for sale.

The Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper has been on United’s radar for some time, and it seems the club are ready to step up their pursuit for the shot stopper.

But in an interview with 90min.com, his club manager has claimed his number one is staying put.

Daniel Farke, the former Norwich manager, has steered the German side to to some impressive results since taking over in the summer, and Sommer has been at the heart of the team.

The Swiss international will be out of contract in six months, and has been at the centre of transfer speculation in recent days.

Fellow Bundesliga side Bayern Munich have also expressed and interest in the 34-year-old, with their first choice keeper Manuel Neuer having sustained a broken leg on a post-World Cup holiday.

And with United’s recent second choice, Martin Dubravka, being recalled from his loan spell at Old Trafford by his parent team Newcastle, Erik ten Hag is keen on bringing Sommer in to the club.

Farke has dismissed any suggestion that the keeper might leave, instead saying that his future is with Mönchengladbach, and that they intend to rectify the on-going contract doubts.

“I’m totally relaxed because there are always discussions about good players. He’s one of Europe’s best goalkeepers. He has a contract until the summer and we have no intention at all of letting him go”, insisted Farke.

“Why should we let such a goalkeeper go? There would have to be very, very good reasons for wanting to let such a quality player go. On the contrary – we want to extend the contract with Yann. There will be talks soon”, added the 46-year-old coach.

“We have one of the best goalkeepers in Europe under contract and we have ambitions. For that we need Yann Sommer. Why would we let him go? There’s no reason for that at all”, alluding to the fact that Sommer is indeed, one of the most highly rated European goalkeepers right now.

It is believed that ten Hag is confident in his options for now, with plans to offer the Switzerland international a pre-contract agreement before signing on a free in the summer, preferred over a January switch.

And despite his managers protestations, having two of Europe’s elite clubs as suitors, will no doubt make Sommer consider his future.

Gary Neville pinpoints the surprise reason for United's resurgent form

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has tipped the Red Devils to finish within a Champions League spot.

Neville spoke and gave his opinion after United’s win against Bournemouth.

United came out winners by three goals to nil courtesy of goals from Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford.

The 20-time English champions are now a point below Manchester City and level with Newcastle with a game in hand.

Neville remarked that he would be surprised if United do not finish in the top four as he hailed Erik ten Hag’s men for their excellent performances.

The former defender was asked whether his former club will finish in the top four. He responded by saying, “Yes. But still, only 17 games gone, a long way to go – anything can happen.”

Neville attributed United’s remarkable turnaround in fortunes to the players bonding and forming close-knit relationships after the Cristiano Ronaldo saga.

The Sky Sports pundit opined that after Ronaldo’s venomous interview with Piers Morgan, United players came together and emerged stronger for it.

“I think coming through the situation with Cristiano, coming through the situation with (Harry) Maguire and overcoming the difficult start.”

“They have all bonded together more than what they would have done with an ordinary or normal start. Ten Hag is now in a strong position to call the shots, but they need a striker.”

United are in an open search for a striker to come in. Ten Hag himself, as Neville alluded, has repeatedly said that he’s in need of attacking reinforcements.

Recently, United have been linked with the likes of Kolo Muani who plays for Eintracht Frankfurt and Marcus Thuram who also plies his trade in Germany.

Ten Hag admits United star is struggling to play every three days

Cristiano Ronaldo’s dramatic departure from Manchester United highlighted a desperate need to add depth to the Red Devils’ attack. Manager Erik ten Hag, who has taken a measured approach to United’s rebuilding, is well aware.

However, Ten Hag says he is not ready to “burn money” and add a striker to his squad for no good reason (via The Mirror).

Value for money

Appeasement may not be high on Ten Hag’s priority list, but he acknowledges the need to recruit a striker in this month’s transfer window.

He said: “I think we have a good team when all the players are available. But with many games coming up, I think there is a need [for a striker]. But you need one who can have an impact, otherwise, you are just burning money, and you don’t strengthen the squad, and it doesn’t help you.”

United have yet to have a full complement of players to choose from, with Jadon Sancho just returning to training and Mason Greenwood suspended by the club.

Anthony Martial recently returned to the fold after a considerable time out with injury.

Nonetheless, boss Ten Hag is confident that Anthony Martial can supply the Red Devils with the goals they need.

Manchester United have found the back of the net just 24 times in 16 league games – the second-fewest in the top half of the table.

Anthony Martial will deliver

On the matter of the Frenchman, Ten Hag said, “I’m really happy with his performances across many games.”

“He has a really good impact on our game. It’s really enjoyable to work with him. If you see the minutes he’s played and the impact he’s had so far, I think that’s really huge.

“But he’s not used to coming on every third day. He didn’t play for a long time and probably, Wolves wasn’t his game. You can see what a real impact he can have, and in the next game, I expect a better performance from him. I think he will do it, I’m really convinced of that.”

Squad depth is priority

Ten Hag also expressed his reluctance to loan out any players.

He said, “I know we have good players, and I know a lot of clubs will have an interest in players who aren’t playing for us so often,” said Ten Hag.

“But we need the squad. We need depth in the squad, and especially, I would say the front line.”

Despite their unimpressive goal tally for the season, United will hope to put a few past Bournemouth in their next league match. The Red Devils clash with Bournemouth at Old Trafford tonight at 8pm.
