It has not come as a major surprise that Erik ten Hag has improved Manchester United with a combination of smart acquisitions and drilling tactical knowledge into his new group of players.

For the most part, the short tenure has been a largely successful one as the Red Devils are currently fifth in the table, just three points off fourth place with a game in hand.

The defence and midfield have been revamped and they have played a major role in helping the team put up decent displays so far.

And the Netherlands international has carried that form over to the World Cup, scoring one goal in each of the three group games and inspiring the team to reach the quarterfinals.

His impressive displays have meant talks surrounding his future have refused to go away with United and Real Madrid said to be fighting for his signature.

Doubts mount over Jadon Sancho as United omit him from travelling squad

Jadon Sancho will not take part in Manchester United’s trip to Spain to face Cadiz and Real Betis.

The club announced the travelling squad this morning but the England man has not been included, much to the surprise of fans hoping that it would be a chance to relaunch his faltering season.

The club’s official site notes that “Jadon Sancho is continuing his individual training programme as part of a process to get back to his highest level.

“The club is fully supporting him in this.”

The statement is curious in itself as it begs the question as to why does the club deems it necessary to say that it is supporting him. There is perhaps a hint that the situation goes beyond a simple injury.

Sancho is not even listed as injured on sites such as Premierinjuries.com.

In better news, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams are fit enough to join in the camp, although Axel Tuanzebe is still unavailable as he too works on a personal fitness programme.

The full squad is: Goalkeepers: De Gea, Heaton, Bishop, Dubravka.

Defenders: Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka, Williams, Mengi, Bernard, Jurado, Hardley, Bennett, Oyedele, Murray, Fredricson.

The first of the two games against Cadiz takes place on Wednesday at 19:00 GMT.

The match with Real Betis follows at 17:00 GMT on Saturday 10 December.

United star injured at World Cup, could require surgery - report

Manchester United star Alex Telles, who is currently out on loan with Sevilla, will no longer be involved with the Brazil national team going forward.

The left back’s involvement in Qatar has come to an end after picking up a serious injury in the Selecao’s surprise loss to Cameroon.

Alongside Telles, Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus who picked up a similar injury, has also been ruled out of the World Cup and is expected to miss a month of football action.

Telles’ injury is assumed to be more serious than Jesus’ setback and the United defender faces the possibility of undergoing surgery.

The Mail reports on this devastating news and says, “Brazil are facing an injury crisis heading into the knockout rounds after Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles both picked up injuries in their defeat against Cameroon that have ruled them out of the World Cup.”

“The pair reported knee issues after the match, and following scans it has been confirmed that neither man will be able to play any further part in the tournament.”

The injury to Jesus and Telles adds to Tite’s selection headache after already losing Neymar, Danilo and Alex Sandro to injury.

It is unclear whether Neymar will be fit for the team’s tie against South Korea on Monday.

Tite especially faces the risk of going into that game without an established or recognized left-back.

Like Neymar who is injured, Sandro’s hip problem makes him a major doubt for the clash against Korea.

United fans will be waiting with bated breath for news on how long Telles is expected to be out and when he is expected to make a full recovery.

It will be interesting to see whether this injury setback impacts his loan spell in Spain.

United put on a show in front of record attendance at Theatre of Dreams

Manchester United Women thrashed Aston Villa 5-0 in front of a record turnout of 30,196 fans at Old Trafford.

United dominated the early exchanges as Hayley Ladd won the ball back and tried to put through Ella Toone had a good run but there was no one to help out and the attack fizzled out.

Alessia Russo found herself in a good position on the edge of the box but she took too much time and couldn’t dig the ball out from under her feet.

United were pressing well but Villa defended well too.

United ultimately made the breakthrough in the 13th minute as a cross came in for Russo which Hannah Hampton saved but it fell kindly for Katie Zelem who bundled it over the line.

United took the tempo of the game down after that and it allowed Villa to grow into the game as they pushed for an equaliser.

But United looked comfortable out of possession as they bided their time.

Their patience paid off as a perfectly weighted pass from Toone unleashed Leah Galton through the middle who dinked it past Hampton.

Moments later and Russo had a chance to make it three as Zelem floated a cross in but her header was just wide.

Villa threatened with a couple of corners in the first half but a confident Mary Earps ensured nothing untoward happened.

A powerful shot in the 35th minute which was heading for the bottom corner was well saved by Earps.

Villa thought they had clawed one back but it was ruled offside. A good save from Earps was pushed into the path of an on rushing Villa player but it was chalked off.

At the other end, the Reds won a free kick and as the ball ping ponged around the box there were several attempts made on goal but Villa had everyone back defending and they couldn’t make it three before half time.

The Reds began the second half on the front foot with a shot from Galton going just wide within a minute of the restart.

It was the best friends teaming up to net the third. A brilliant run by Toone as she burst into the box found Russo at the back post.

In a league that is so often dependent on goal difference, United never relaxed and kept searching for more.

But Villa weren’t beaten yet and twice Zelem lost the ball just outside the box allowing Villa to get a sniff at goal but luckily both times Earps was there to save United’s clean sheet.

The Reds saw out the ten minutes of pressure from Villa and pounced again when the next opportunity arose.

This time it was Ona Batlle down the right who smashed it onto the inside the crossbar as the ball then went in.

Galton was brought down just outside the box but Zelem couldn’t quite get her shot through the wall.

In the final minute of injury time, Rachel Williams got her first goal for the club as she tapped it into an open goal.

World Cup star needs "huge turnaround" to keep United career alive - Sky Sports

Harry Maguire may need to leave Manchester United off the back of his strong showings for England during the Qatar World Cup.

That is according to Sky reported Dharmesh Sheth, who believes that, while a winter switch is unlikely, Maguire could be due to leave the Red Devils in the summer.

Speaking on the Sky Sports World Cup podcast, Sheth said “I can’t see it happening in January and there’s no men’s tournament in the summer.”

“I think I can see Harry Maguire staying at United until at least the summer.

“But if he is in a position where he is not getting the football that he wants and the regular football that maybe Gareth Southgate will then be looking at and saying, ‘you need to be playing regularly,’ I can see potentially something happening next summer.

“He’s the captain and he’s not playing. If that’s not going to change, he is at an age now and a regular at England where he’s going to need to be playing regular first-team football.

“United then will have to make a decision as well because they spent £80m on him. In no world now are they going to get £80m for Harry Maguire, simply because – I’m not taking about anything to do with his form, put that aside – but the fact that United would be prepared to sell him would immediately bring his price down anyway.

“I can see something potentially happening in the summer unless there is a huge turnaround in the second half of the season where he gets more gametime.”

The defender has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, with Rapahel Varane and Lisandro Martinez forging a fantastic partnership at the heart of Man United’s defence.

Even in the absence of Varane, there were a number of games for which Erik ten Hag opted to start Victor Lindelof over his captain, as Maguire slipped down the pecking order.

Going into the World Cup, fans and pundits alike questioned Gareth Southgate’s decision to keep faith with the former Leicester City man, but England’s defensive performances have been vindicated in that regard so far.

Maguire has played very well in Qatar and is doing a good job of reminding people why Manchester United wanted to sign him in the first place.

But his issues at club level have not gone away and while he is enjoying a great run of form on the international stage, he is unlikely to oust either Varane or Martinez from Ten Hag’s preferred eleven.

Arguably, United would do well to move their captain on in the immediate aftermath of the World Cup, with his stock currently as high as it has been since they signed him.

But given Varane’s issues with recurring injuries and a lack of depth at the back, doing so without securing a replacement would be unwise for a team facing as congested a schedule as the Red Devils.

A summer move does look like, however. Maguire almost looks a different player away from Old Trafford and a transfer could suit all parties.

Replacing him with a young left-sided defender could be a smart option for the balance of the team, with Lisandro Martinez the only natural left-footed centre back in the squad.

United enter the race for exciting World Cup star wanted by arch-rivals

Despite the heavy investment in the summer which led to five permanent arrivals, there remain gaps to fill in the Manchester United squad going forward.

One area where the team strengthened immensely is in the centre of the park with the high-profile signings of Casemiro and free agent Christian Eriksen.

Fans had been fed up of watching the conservative duo of Fred and Scott McTominay take to the field and Erik ten Hag realised the need to inject fresh blood.

Midfield reinforcements

However, the age of both new recruits and the uncertainty surrounding Fred‘s future has necessitated the need to bring in a new central midfielder.

And a host of names have been linked with a move either in January or next summer including the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Jude Bellingham and Moises Caicedo.

Big names from Serie A have also been mooted as possible additions including Lazio superstar Sergej Milinković-Savić and Davide Frattesi of Sassuolo.

A new name has entered the fray — Torino midfielder Sasa Lukic, someone who has quietly impressed for Serbia in the World Cup.

The Serbian’s contract with the Turin-based club is set to expire in 2024 and according to Italian publication Torino Granata, despite Torino’s best efforts, Lukic seems to be “evaluating a future, even in the near future away from” the club.

The publication has name dropped United and Serie A giants Roma as possible destinations for the 26-year-old. Surprisingly, Leeds United are also named as a club desperate to add the Serbia international to their ranks.

“Roma and Manchester United would be on him, but another Premier League club would also be interested: it would be Leeds United,” the report adds.

Lukic is valued at €13million according to Transfermarkt and is a versatile player capable of playing in the defensive midfield position as well as in a more advanced role.

His World Cup displays, where he has started in all three games as the defensive pivot, might entice the aforementioned clubs to join the bidding table with negotiations to follow swiftly.

He has three goals and one assist in 14 games across all competitions this season and might be a decent buy for a mid-table club. United should definitely be aiming for a better player next summer.

Four United stars make World Cup team of the group stage - opinion

With the World Cup knockout stages commencing this afternoon, The Peoples Person has taken a look back at the Group Stages to pick out the players who have shone in Qatar, with a number of Manchester United players impressing.

In goal, Wojciech Szczęsny is the undisputed first choice, having saved two penalties – one to prevent a Saudi Arabian equaliser and another against none other than Lionel Messi. Had he conceded either of those, we would currently be taking about Poland getting through to the knockouts by virtue of receiving fewer cards than Mexico.

Achraf Hakimi has been outstanding at right back for a Morocco side few expected to progress from Group. He assisted Youssouf El-Neysri’s goal against Canada to secure the top spot and his defensive work – hardly the hallmark of his game at club level – helped the Atlas Lions to clean sheets against both Belgium and Croatia.

Much maligned and often despised, Harry Maguire is enjoying himself playing for England. He provided an assist against Iran in what could prove to be a sign of things to come from the Three Lions, who are among the most dangerous teams in the tournament from set pieces. His partnership with John Stones is proving fruitful, with the disappointment at conceding two goals in the aforementioned 6-2 victory spurring the pair on to secure clean sheets in their following two matches. He may never be first choice at Manchester United again, but it is hard to argue with Gareth Southgate’s reliance on him for England.

Frenkie de Jong has played in front of a back three for a Netherlands side that no team in the tournament has a better defensive record than at this stage (Why is he at centre back in this side? Well, if it’s good enough for Xavi…). De Jong has scored and assisted from deep in midfield and has been at the heart of absolutely everything Oranje have done well at both ends of the pitch. An exciting dribbler and incisive passer, the Barcelona playmaker is averaging 3.7 tackles per game and winning 78% of his duels. He’s doing the dirty work well in this tournament to back up his silky skills.

Eight key passes in two matches sounds like an achievement worthy of world-class number ten, but those are the stats of AC Milan and France left back Theo Hernandez. His performances in Qatar only go to show why so many consider him to be among the best attacking fullbacks in world football, with his pace and quality of pass a fantastic weapon for the French National Team. Unfortunately it may be a weapon they will have to do without against Poland, with Hernandez a doubt after picking up an ankle injury.

The term ‘volante’ is often translated directly into ‘midfielder’ when discussing Brazilian football, but it actually means ‘steering wheel.’ Casemiro has been just that for Brazil, prompting their talisman to hail him as the best volante in the world. The United man was every bit the driving force behind Selecao’s opening two wins, directing his teammates, protecting his defence, and making the crucial differences when needed, just as he was against Switzerland, when his unlikely volley won the three points late in the day.

Two goals and two assists in two matches makes Bruno Fernandes just about the most productive player currently in Qatar. Those stats also mean that he has been directly involved in two-thirds of the goals Portugal have scored in this tournament, even accounting for the match he sat out. The fact that he was one of the only players to have been rested for the whole of the South Korea game only goes to show that Fernando Santos is finally coming around to Bruno’s vital importance.

Arguably the standout player in a group that contained Portugal, Uruguay, and a heroic South Korea side, Mohammed Kudus gave the lowest-ranked team going into the tournament a fighting chance of making the last sixteen. His technical ability made him the talisman behind their 3-2 win over the Korean Republic, while his fierce attitude and willingness to muck in with defensive work made the 22-year-old a leader for the Ghanaians. The only player to make this eleven without qualifying from their group, Kudus can certainly hold his head high after his performances.

Marcus Rashford had to fight his way into the starting line-up for England have come off the back of heavy criticism since his penalty miss against Italy at Euro 2020. He is yet to play a full 90 minutes and only started in England’s last game against Wales. And yet he is in contention for the Golden Boot having netted three times – scoring at a rate of one in every 36 minutes on the pitch. Gareth Southgate may well have stumbled onto a winning formula during the group stages, with Rashford playing as a right-wing forward. Who would have thought playing a pacey forward who likes to get in behind alongside Harry Kane would be a good idea?

Kylian Mbappe is staking a claim to be the best player in the world, with some even wondering if he is already the best Frenchman to play the game. Three goals and an assist in Les Bleus’ opening two games assured their passage into the next round, and he truly has been a joy to watch so far in Qatar. There were many candidates for the centre-forward position in this team, with Spain’s Alvaro Morata, South Korea’s Gue-sung Cho, Ecuador’s Enner Valencia, and even Argentina’s Lionel Messi all standout performers, but ultimately there was no beating Mbappe.

Cody Gakpo, a long-term target of Manchester United scored the opening goal in all three of the Netherlands’ matches so far. He accounts for 60% of the Oranje’s goals, the second highest proportion any player has managed so far in the tournament. If that wasn’t enough, his group stage goals constitute a perfect hattrick, having scored with his left, his right, and his head – he doesn’t care how the chance comes, he just scores it. His lethal form is proving his credentials as the talk of European football, and certainly justifying Erik ten Hag’s protracted interest in the player.

The knockout stages commence at 3pm today with the Netherlands taking on the USA, before Argentina face Australia this evening.

United transfer target's World Cup howler could extend this superstar's shelf-life

Following the arrival of Erik ten Hag as the new Manchester United manager, the club was expected to undergo a major rebuilding phase with deadwood chucked out and an injection of fresh blood.

The Dutchman did just that in the summer, as he plugged key holes in the squad with the permanent signing of five players and the loan signing of a back-up goalkeeper.

The addition of Martin Dubravka was significant because of the form exhibited by David de Gea in the recent past, with his critics pointing out his weakness with the ball at his feet and his reluctance to come off his line.

The Spaniard seemed to lack the two most important traits synonymous with modern goalkeepers and it was widely expected that De Gea would lose his No 1 status under the former Ajax boss.

And the season begun in disastrous fashion for the 32-year-old as he committed high-profile errors in pre-season as well as against Brentford in the Premier League.

With De Gea’s contract ending in 2023, the 20-time English champions were linked with a host of goalkeepers but since then, the former Atletico Madrid has definitely upped his game.

And it was a surprise to see Spain coach Luis Enrique overlook the United shot-stopper once again when he picked his squad for the World Cup.

And United legend Gary Neville has slammed that decision, especially in the aftermath of Japan’s famous 2-1 victory over the 2010 World Cup champions.

Japan’s scored the first goal through a Ritsu Doan shot which went in at Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon‘s near post.

And Neville, speaking on ITV (via Daily Mail), slammed the keeper and opined that De Gea would have saved that and spared the nation’s blushes.

“He’s not filled me with confidence. (Simon’s) the one part of the team which is a real weak point. He’s got to save that. It’s no good that.

“They’ve got De Gea still at home.I know he’s not been brilliant these last few years, but I can’t think he’d let that one in! That’s a real bad one. In a knock-out game that’s fatal for you.”

Interestingly, Simon has been linked with a move to the Premier League giants but on this showing, maybe De Gea deserves another shot.

Dazzling young United star unable to save his country from early World cup exit

Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri was involved in Uruguay’s win over Ghana in their final group game but it wasn’t enough to send the South Americans to the knockout stage of the tournament.

It was an action packed first half. Uruguayan keeper Rochet brought down Kudus in the area and after a long VAR check Ghana were awarded a penalty.

Andre Ayew stepped up and his soft penalty was easily saved by Rochet, who dived to his left.

Up the other end Nunez thought he’d made the breakthrough for Uruguay as he chipped it over the keeper but it was defended off the line by Ghana.

However, it wasn’t long before they took the lead, De Arrascaeta heading in after Suarez’ initial shot was saved by the keeper.

Then again, De Arrascaeta with a brilliant volley put Uruguay in control as they went 2-0 up.

With South Korea still losing to Portugal at this point it looked like Uruguay could be heading through with the Portuguese.

In the second half, Ghana came out fighting but Uruguay did have their chances too and the drama continued as Uruguay had a penalty shout. Nunez was brought down this time and though VAR called the referee over to the monitor he decided the Ghanaian defender had won the ball.

Pellistri’s last act of the game was a brilliant chance for a third goal as the ball fell to him in the box but his controlled shot was just wide and found the side netting.

Though the 20 year old had had a fairly good game on the surface, his pass accuracy was poor with only 69% of his passes completed. He won just a third of his ground duels and none of his aerial duels.

However, he was an exciting player to watch as he tried to be involved as much as possible, putting in some key tackles as well as good long ball deliveries going forward.

The Uruguay manager took off their goalscorer De Arrascaeta, Suarez and Nunez, thinking he’d done enough and put on more defensive alternatives, but news filtered through that South Korea had scored. It was 2-1 to them against Portugal.

Luis Suarez was practically crying on the bench as he looked up at the big screen. This meant South Korea would go through as Korea and Uruguay had the same points and the same goal difference, but Korea had scored more.

Ex-Red Edinson Cavani had a golden opportunity to find the third but the Ghanaian keeper pulled off a world class save but landed awkwardly. It would have been ruled offside but he wasn’t to know.

South Korea waited patiently as eight minutes of added time ensued with Ghana chasing two goals and Uruguay seeking that crucial third which would send them through.

A last minute free kick was comfortably saved and as the final whistle blew the Uruguay players surrounded the ref and officials with a number of them, including Cavani, being booked.

It was a dramatic conclusion to Group H.

Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot put in a mixed audition for a starting berth in Portugal’s round of 16 match today as he was given 90 minutes to impress in their last group H tie against South Korea.

It took Dalot just five minutes to make his mark, brilliantly collecting the ball on the right flank before setting up Ricardo Horta for a simple finish.

Dalot made some excellent forward runs but blotted his copybook with two very poor passes, one in the first half that went unpunished and the other in the 65th minute when he gifted it to Korea in a dangerous zone.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa spared the United man’s blushes by pulling out a good save from Hwang’s shot.

In the 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Koreans, Dalot won 4/6 ground duels, 2/3 aerial duels and made two key passes.

He had 78% pass accuracy.

However, he also lost possession 18 times and only completed 2/4 crosses and 5/10 long balls.

To be fair to the United man, it was a lacklustre performance all round from a widely rotated Portugal side, especially after news came through that Uruguay were 2-0 up against Ghana – the only team that would have been capable of pipping the Europeans for top spot in the group.

Former United man Cristiano Ronaldo was woeful in front of goal for the Portuguese, wasting a number of golden opportunities and finding himself offside on a number of occasions.

Costa, a reported United target also impressed again for Portugal and made two or three good saves. There was little he could have done to prevent either South Korea goal.

Atletico Madrid will let Joao Felix join United in January, but only for this price - report

Manchester United are among the favourites to sign Joao Felix but could face a hefty fee to sign him from Atletico Madrid.

The Times reports that the La Liga side want to recoup as much of the €127m they paid for the Portugal star back in 2019 as possible.

At Benfica, Felix was considered one of the premier talents in world football, but he has had a difficult time working under Diego Simeone.

Their relationship has deteriorated greatly in the past few months in particular, so much so that Atletico will now listen to offers.

That stands in stark contrast to their position in the summer, when they told Man United in no uncertain terms that Joao Felix was not for sale.

With the report claiming that Atletico are hoping that a good showing at the World Cup will allow them to demand around €100m for the 23-year-old, the Red Devils could be frustrated again in January.

While United are in the market for attacking reinforcements they are highly unlikely to pay that sort of price midseason.

As reported by The Peoples Person, a loan move – potentially one with an option to buy – could be far more likely.

Erik ten Hag is in desperate need of additional attacking options but, given United’s spending spree in the summer, may need to make do with a little bargain hunting in the winter window.

There is also the very valid concern that Joao Felix simply is not worth €100m.

He has struggled in Spain in between his hot streaks in front of goal, and while there are mitigating factors that have obstructed his obvious talent, there is no reason United should have to pay an exorbitant fee just because Atletico Madrid did in the first place.

Should a compromise be reached between the clubs, there is every reason to think that Joao Felix would blossom under an attack-minded coach such as Erik ten Hag.

For now, the player is focused on continuing his good form at the Qatar World Cup as Portugal take on South Korea as they look to guarantee their qualification into the knockout stages of the tournament.

Sunderland boss warns Amad his career will be badly affected if this happens

Tony Mowbray believes that on-loan Manchester United starlet Amad Diallo is likely to remain at Sunderland for the rest of the season, despite reports that Erik ten Hag is considering recalling him.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Dutchman is keen to add another left-footed attacker to his squad in the aftermath of Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational exit from the club.

And with Amad already on the books, the Ivorian could be an easy solution to strengthen Ten Hag’s options.

Currently, Antony is the only left-footed attacker in the squad and given the United boss’ preference for inverted winger, that places a heavy burden on the Brazilian.

But Mowbray was dismissive of the possibility, saying “We’re not sitting here at the moment thinking, ‘Oh, Man United are going to take him back in January because he’s going to go and make a massive impact for them’.

“I think Man United are in an alright place, aren’t they? They’re doing okay. They’ve got a young Argentinian lad coming through who’s been scoring a few goals for them, and I’m sure they’ll be wanting to give him a chance.

“If he was to go back, then I’m not sure he’d be going back to play, and surely at the age the boy is, he needs to play,” Mowbray added.

“He’s doing that here, and I think this is a great vehicle for him to be showcasing his talent.

“He’s helping our team to be successful, and he’s showcasing his talent to Man United. I know he’s enjoying it – you can see that by the smile on his face every day now, as opposed to a month ago, when he was quite a shy, introverted individual. Now, his talent is flourishing and he’s enjoying himself, and I’m sure he’s not in any rush to go back.”

Amad had a slow start at Sunderland and was even relegated to the U21s back in September, but as since found himself becoming a key member of the Championship team.

Mowbray was effusive in his praise of the youngster after Sunderland’s win against Birmingham City, during which Amad scored to take his tally to three goals and an assist in his last five appearances.

“Amad came to the party for us – and I feel he’s really settling in with the group.

“There’s an understanding now that this kid has got real talent and deserves to be respected within the team. For me to pick him over Patrick Roberts… I sat in a press room a couple of weeks ago and said I didn’t think there was a better player in the league than Roberts.

“Amad has been unbelievable in training, so fast with his feet and direct, and his physical data from all our recent games has been incredible. He scored a wonderful goal, and we see him do that every day in training.”

With Amad seemingly developing well on Wearside, United might be best served allowing him to continue his growth in England’s second tier for the rest of the season.

But if Ten Hag has been impressed by his physical development and rise in confidence, he may well see him as an ideal candidate to rotate with Antony on Manchester United’s right wing.

Incredible reception expected for United women as they prepare to make history

Manchester United Women will face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday in front of a record crowd.

Over 30,000 tickets have now been sold for the historic clash, far exceeding the 20,241 who attended the first WSL game played at Old Trafford with fans in attendance, when United beat Everton 3-1 in March of this year.

United currently sit third in the table on the same points as second placed Arsenal, who they beat 3-2 at the Emirates in their last league game, and three points behind league leaders Chelsea, who have played one game more than the Reds.

Yesterday, the club unveiled a banner on the East Stand of Old Trafford which says ‘Change is here’ and depicts photos of the players and fans.

The move signifies the club’s dedication to the growth of the women’s game and its intentions for Manchester United Women to be successful.

It is expected to be the highest attendance for any Manchester United Women’s home game in history.

Talking about the game, Polly Bancroft, Director of Women’s Football, said “This game against Villa promises to be another special occasion as we continue to maintain our challenge at the top of the WSL and I know the players will be lifted by our fantastic supporters.”

She continued, “Manchester United, as the biggest club in the country, is determined to lead the way in the growth of the women’s game – both on and off the field. So it is really special to see the excitement that is building for this fixture and it again demonstrates how much progress the women’s game is making, not just here but across the country.”

It is the third women’s game to be hosted at Old Trafford this year. The Theatre of Dreams played host to the opening game of the Women’s European Championships which saw a sell-out crowd witness England’s victory over Austria.

Head coach Marc Skinner is excited to welcome back the fans to Old Trafford as their away supporters helped them pip Arsenal at the post in their last game.

“If you meet 10 Manchester United fans, they’ll sound like there’s 10,000,” Skinner told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday.

He went on to say, “I don’t have a figure [of tickets sold that we want to get to] because we just want to keep putting great performances on so we can fill Old Trafford going forward.”

“We know it takes a bit of time and the more and more exposure we have in the media, it shows people the qualities. We’ll work and do our side and make sure we put on something everyone wants to come and watch.”

Long-standing Manchester United target Declan Rice could be set to leave West Ham United in 2023, with the player himself dropping the hint while on England duty at the Qatar World Cup.

The midfielder did nothing to dampen the rumours surrounding his future during a press conference, saying, “I see my friends who play in the Champions League, winning the big trophies.

“You only get one career and at the end of your career you want to look at what you’ve won.”

Reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano added yet more fuel to the fire by tweeted that the “Expectation is for Rice to leave West Ham in 2023.”

While a January move is unlikely, Rice could cause something of a bidding war in the summer, with a number of top European clubs monitoring the situation.

As reported by The Peoples Person, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are interested, while Chelsea are also known to be long time admirers.

Despite Rice’s contract expiring in 2024, it is thought that West Ham would be looking for a fee in excess of €100m to part with their captain.

Whether or not United would be able to commit such a fee to sign the midfielder is as of yet unclear, but with the player reportedly unhappy with his team’s disappointing season and publicly opening the door for a potential transfer, the Red Devils will certainly be alert to the situation.

Declan Rice typically plays as a sitting midfielder for England but has shown fantastic developments in his game at club level.

For West Ham he usually operates in more of a box-to-box role, with his dependable passing and ball-carrying ability invaluable to his team.

For United he could forge a fine partnership with Casemiro and would likely relish the opportunity to learn from a midfielder hailed by the likes of Neymar and Christian Eriksen as the best around.

The Red Devils lack depth in several areas of the pitch and Rice’s ability to slot into either Casemiro or Eriksen’s roles would be a huge boost to Erik ten Hag’s capacity to rotate his squad.

Of course, Man United will almost certainly need to qualify for next season’s Champions League if they are to compete with the likes of Bayern and Madrid, and even then Chelsea may well be the most likely destination as the Blues look to rebuild their midfield.

Scandal proves Ronaldo exit was the best business United have done in years

Terminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract just 15 months after signing him might prove to be the best bit of business Manchester United have done in years, judging by the extraordinary situation Juventus now find themselves in.

The entire board of directors resigned from the Serie A club on Monday following allegations of false accounting and market manipulation.

If found guilty, the Italian giants could face a series of legal challenges that could significantly worsen an already dire financial situation.

Their presence on the Italian stock exchange as a PLC opens them up to lawsuits from shareholders and financial authorities alike, and according to journalist Gianfranco Teotino the Old Lady’s signing of Ronaldo was the “Original sin,” the first step down a road that may lead them to the brink of ruin.

The club spent €100m to prise him from Real Madrid back in 2018 and spent three years paying the striker €31m-per-season, breaking their wage structure is sensational fashion.

They also vastly overestimated the financial boon that signing a player of Cristiano Ronaldo’s calibre would bring, with Teotino claiming they were “only partially” repaid in terms of financial growth, with TV rights abroad receiving no boost during his stay.

Success on the pitch also failed to grow, with the Champions League trophy remaining elusive while Juventus’ stranglehold on Serie A diminished. That also negatively affected the club’s revenues.

But selling Ronaldo to Manchester United last season did not solve all of their problems.

According to The Athletic, Juventus made a whopping €254.3m loss during their last campaign, breaking an unwanted Italian record in the process.

A huge contribution to that astonishing figure is player wages. During Ronaldo’s time in Turin, Juventus renewed 14 contracts with senior players, many of whom saw their wages increase significantly to catch up with the Portugal star’s mammoth salary.

They also signed 24 players, whose agents were well aware of what Juventus were prepared to pay for talent and able to negotiate higher salaries off the back of Ronaldo’s earnings.

Manchester United have some experience of situations like this, with Alexis Sanchez a notable example. The Chilean signed from Arsenal in January 2018, with the Red Devils offering an unprecedented £350,000-a-week contract.

It quickly became apparent that Sanchez’s performance levels did not justify him earning twice as much as almost anybody in the squad and United are still suffering the financial consequences of that contract today.

David de Gea’s agent was quick to use Sanchez’s terms as leverage for United’s then-Player of the Season and negotiated a £375,000-a-week deal for his client. To this day, that wage remains the highest paid to any Spanish footballer of all time.

Anthony Martial – who has barely featured this campaign and spent the start of the year on loan at Sevilla – managed to get a £250,000-a-week contract a year after Sanchez signed.

Mino Raiola saw fit to dismiss a £300,000-a-week offer to Paul Pogba as “nothing,” while Jadon Sancho’s agent had a clear reference point for a United winger’s value when he negotiated a £350,000 weekly wage for his client.

The Cristiano Ronaldo situation at Old Trafford threatened to be so much worse.

Picking up over half a million pounds a week and failing to show the quality to justify it, the legendary goalscorer could have been used as a reference point in a number of negotiations, with a host of United players in need of renewals.

David de Gea, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, Fred, and even young stars Alejandro Garnacho and Shola Shoretire all have contracts up for expiry this June.

United do have options to extend most of those deals by a further twelve months, but they have yet to activate any of them, perhaps realising that such a move would only kick the can down the road.

Instead the Red Devils have opted to assess player performances under Ten Hag before negotiating deals on fresh terms. In some cases the club are likely to offer reduced salaries, with De Gea and Fred being notable examples.

United face a struggle to get their wage structure back under control after the Alexis Sanchez fiasco, but without the spectre of Ronaldo’s pay packet looming over them, they have every chance of succeeding.

Had the club hired a manager whose focus was on keeping Ronaldo happy rather than forging a team ethos, it is easy to imagine a scenario in which the striker’s one-year extension clause was triggered and the aforementioned players had their representatives pointing to his wages as a benchmark for their renewals.

Fortunately that is a bullet the club have managed to dodge, which should make Ten Hag’s task of creating a harmonious winning team that much easier.

United target uninspiring in shock World Cup exit

Belgium’s World Cup campaign is over after failing to beat Croatia in their final fixture in Group F.

A 0-0 draw was enough to see Croatia finish in second place with Morocco topping the group after beating bottom-placed Canada 2-1.

Belgium failed to impress in any of their games in Qatar, an underwhelming campaign that surely signals the end of their ‘golden generation’.

Croatia thought they had the chance to open the scoring 15 minutes into the game but saw a penalty chalked off by VAR for an incredibly tight offside call in the lead up to Yannick Carrasco’s clumsy tackle on Andrej Kramaric.

The overturned penalty proved to be the only moment of note in a cagey first-half.

The second-half continued in the same vein with Croatia happy to play for the draw. Belgium huffed and puffed but didn’t do enough to force a winner that would have seen them leapfrog their opponents and secure qualification.

United target Thomas Meunier looked solid yet uninspiring on what was his 62nd cap for the national side.

Meunier provided decent width on the right side for Belgium, without mustering anything close to being decisive with his final ball.

The Borussia Dortmund man almost forced a winner in the final moments with his cross-cum-shot deflecting off Romelu Lukaku to go agonisingly wide of the Croatian goal.

Defensively, Meunier struggled somewhat, operating in a back four rather than Roberto Martinez traditional back five, allowing crosses into the Belgium box far too easily.

United are looking for a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is expected to leave the club in the summer, if not in January and Meunier’s name is consistently linked with the post.

United midfield target Youri Tielemans came on with twenty minutes to play but failed to make an impact, reflective of his tournament as a whole.

Former Red Lukaku was brought on at half-time to provide a focal point in attack and give the Croatian defenders something to think about, after their all too easy ride in the first half.

Lukaku had a wonderful chance to open the scoring seconds before the hour mark but crashed his shot against the post when it looked easier to score.

Lukaku then missed a couple more half chances before the best chance of the game fell to him in the last minute of normal time.

The Inter man failed to make any meaningful contact when three yards out from a Thorgan Hazard cross, chesting the ball back into the Croatian keeper’s grateful grasp.

The shock exit will leave Roberto Martinez with much to ponder as the second best team in the world failed to make any impact in the tournament.

A lot of names have been linked with a January move to Old Trafford including one of the highlights of the ongoing World Cup — Cody Gakpo of The Netherlands.

But one more player who has been quietly impressive and has been on the club’s radar for sometime now is USA captain Christian Pulisic.

The 24-year-old has scored one goal and has registered one assist in three World Cup games to ensure his nation qualifies for the Round of 16.

The American had been linked with a loan move in the summer but ultimately, Chelsea pulled the plug due to the Red Devils being fellow contenders for the top-four spots.

According to Calciomercato, the 24-year-old is unhappy with the lack of game time in London and is willing to leave to change that.

The Italian outlet add that Juventus have contacted the player’s entourage but the former Borussia Dortmund star is ‘destined’ for the Red Devils and could leave as early as January.

The Blues would be open to letting him go on a permanent deal and value him at £35 million. United would prefer a loan move.

The Reds could face stiff competition from Premier League leaders Arsenal and top-four contenders Newcastle United for the American’s signature.

United desperate to ward off foreign interest in Golden Boot contender - report

It was the final of the European Championships when Marcus Rashford last donned the England jersey and since that fateful night, not much went right for the Manchester United star.

He had to undergo shoulder surgery for a long-standing problem and when he returned his confidence looked shot and his head would drop at the slightest hint of trouble.

He lost his place under former interim manager Ralf Rangnick and there were reports linking with an exit from his boyhood club last summer.

Rashford’s resurgence

But following the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the Mancunian seems to be enjoying his football once again and the manager’s faith in him as a striker has helped him rediscover his goal-scoring touch.

The 25-year-old is United’s top-scorer this season with eight goals and also has three assists to his name in 19 games across all competitions.

His impressive return to form alerted Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate, who recalled him for the World Cup. And once again, Rashford has not disappointed.

The United academy graduate has scored thrice in three group games and is the joint top-scorer in the competition. Even more impressively, the United No 10 has succeeded down the right flank.

Interestingly, his United contract is set to expire in 2023 and the club hold the option of exercising the one-year extension clause in his contract.

United are locked in discussions with the player’s entourage and are hopeful of agreeing a new long-term contract soon.

But with the England star busy with the World Cup, there is no definite time-line and foreign clubs can begin negotiating with the Manchester-born lad from January 1.

And The Mirror have now reported that United want to avoid this.

“Rashford’s current deal expires next summer but there Is a 12-month option which United intend to exercise to stop him being able to talk to foreign clubs from January 1,” the report mentions.

United remain confident that Rashford will end up staying due to encouraging conversations with the player and his determination to win back his place in the first-team squad.

“Rashford’s priority remains to stay at Old Trafford and he snubbed any chance of moving on last summer because he was so determined to stay and fight for his place,” the article added.

Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to snatch RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku from under Chelsea’s nose.

The Frenchman is reportedly close to signing for the Blues, with a move likely to be completed at the end of the current season.

Fabrizio Romano even reports that the player completed his medical back in September, tweeting earlier this week:

Coming from the Italian journalist, those last three words usually mean that just about everything has been wrapped up.

But speaking on MUTV show The Debate, Scholes highlights the Leipzig man as a player United should try to sign.

When asked where Erik ten Hag’s squad needed strengthening, the former midfield maestro had no hesitation in naming the centre forward position.

And “the lad at Leipzig that Chelsea have been linked with” was the first player on Scholes’ mind, with the Frenchman having caught his eye.

The 25-year-old has already scored 12 goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances this season, picking up right where he left off last season in terms of output.

Versatile, technical, and intelligent, Nkunku would certainly have offered Ten Hag’s team a threat in offensive areas.
But with a move to Chelsea all but secured for the attacker, United are likely to have to look elsewhere to add goals to their side.

Scholes also references Victor Osimhen as a player who has impressed him, with the Nigerian hitman a real threat in the penalty box.

Cody Gakpo was the last of the three forwards mentioned by the United legend as a good fit for the club, having watched him shine at the Qatar World Cup.

The common theme is clearly goals, with United having scored just 20 times across their 14 Premier League matches so far this season.
