United get green light to sign gifted €20m star under one condition

The first job Erik ten Hag had once he was appointed as Manchester United manager was to fix a leaky defence which conceded the most number of goals the club has ever conceded in the Premier League era last season.

And the Dutchman has partly fixed it with the additions of Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez. Both players have impressed fans with their respective skill-sets but the job is not yet done.

The Dutch boss needs to rectify the issue of a bloated squad with United willing to offload as many as six defenders before the transfer window shuts.

AWB not in plans

The right-back spot is one area where Ten Hag is thinking about adding quality in. Diogo Dalot has been impressive in pre-season friendlies but Aaron Wan-Bissaka does not seem like he is part of the new manager’s plans.

With Ethan Laird set for yet another loan stint at Watford, another right-back must be recruited to provide competition to the young Portuguese full-back.

It was widely reported that United were interested in Denzel Dumfries but Inter Milan’s valuation of the player remains quite high. A new and more affordable name has started making the rounds, that of Sergino Dest of Barcelona. The revelation comes from well-know Spanish publication SPORT.

The biggest factor going for the move is Ten Hag has personally dealt with the player in the past. Dest was one of the rising Ajax stars back in 2019-20 and was integral to the side that won the Dutch Super Cup that season.

Ajax had sold the US international to Barcelona for an initial €21 million fee plus a further €5 million in variables. The 21-year-old has made 72 appearances for the Catalan club across two seasons, netting thrice and providing a further four assists.

But with the La Liga giants keen to add Cesar Azpilicueta to their ranks, Dest is aware that his involvement will be decreasing.

Initially, Xavi had planned with the American in mind but if the Chelsea skipper were to move to Catalunya, and with a reserve option like Sergi Roberto already available, it would be better suited if the Camp Nou outfit try and recoup their money.

Barca are open to selling the young full-back for a minimum of €20 million, a fee United would have no problem in matching. The Blaugrana need to offload players if they are to adhere to La Liga’s strict salary cap as well as register their new signings.

Dest’s attacking playing style and ability to bomb forward and track back was what impressed Ten Hag enough to hand him his professional debut at the age of 18.

And Ten Hag would love to be reunited with his former protege. Many clubs like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Atlético de Madrid, as well as Monaco were after Dest’s signature last year.

The Almere-born defender has always wanted to prove his worth to Barca and wanted to help the club return to the top but with impending additions on the way, Dest and his entourage are aware of the need to keep options open.

And reuniting with Ten Hag at Manchester would certainly be a favourable career move. United would do well to add further defensive reinforcements especially with so many players likely to be offloaded and with the vast number of matches lined up.

"Absolutely insane!" United starlet speaks out after Ten Hag gives him debut

United wonderkid Isak Hansen-Aaroen has been talking to a Norwegian outlet about his debut for the Red Devils against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

The 17 year old came on for the last 5 minutes of the 1-1 draw and immediately carved out a chance to score, which was well saved by Rayo keeper, Dimitrievski.

And interviewed by Dagbladet, the academy star couldn’t hide his excitement at having made his debut.

“I just sat the whole game and waited for him [Erik Ten Hag] to say my name,” he said.

“When he finally said my name, he asked if I needed to warm up. I said ‘no no, I can go straight on’.”

“It was a lot of fun! I could say so much about what I feel, I don’t know where to start.

“It’s a dream I’ve had for as long as I can remember. That it’s happened is absolutely insane.

“I’m living the dream now.”

Dagbladet asked Hansen-Aaroen what instructions he received from the boss and how training is under the Dutchman.

“He only said how we should press, where I should position myself, but he only said that I should go out and enjoy myself,” the starlet said.

“There is starting to be a lot of training with him. I think it’s hugely exciting to see how this can go, it seems very positive.

“If you look a bit at how he has worked with young boys before and the things he has already done, it seems exciting,” he enthused.

It is unknown as yet whether the Norwegian will be sent out on loan this season or stay at Old Trafford.

He only turns 18 this month so may be considered too young for a loan, but his prodigious talent and maturity might persuade United to fast track him.

An Old Trafford stay could mean a competitive debut as United do battle on four fronts, including the Europa League and League Cup.

"High ranking sources” concerned over United’s failure to sign in this key position - report

Samuel Luckhurst has raised concerns over Manchester United’s attacking options, as the new season draws ever closer.

Luckhurst reports the hierarchy at the club are aware of the lack of options, currently available to Erik Ten Hag, with just a few weeks left of the summer window.

“High-ranking sources at the club concede United need to upgrade their forward line to meet manager Erik ten Hag’s demand for proven options”

Luckhurst continues, “There is an acceptance at Manchester United they are short of strength in depth up front as they consider attacking reinforcements.”

Having let a raft of attacking options leave the club this summer and the continuing uncertainty of Cristiano Ronaldo’s future, the lack of threat is concerning Ten Hag.

United are likely to line up with a front three of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who for all their talent, are not expected to put up the individual numbers of a proven goal scorer.

The lack of depth behind the aforementioned is also something that will concern Ten Hag, with Luckhurst underlining the lack of proven quality in the ranks.

“Elanga has struggled for form since scoring in the Champions League round-of-16 draw with Atletico in February – his last club goal.”

“Tahith Chong‘s playing time has mystified observers and he was pilloried for his toothless performance against Vallecano on Sunday”

Alejandro Garnacho enjoyed a fine campaign for the under 21’s last time out and is perhaps seen as the brightest spark behind the first XI, having impressed in his pre-season flashes.

“Garnacho thrived on his first appearance in pre-season against Vallecano and drew praise from Ten Hag afterwards” Luckhurst states.

However, Garnacho is yet to start a meaningful game for United and at 18 years old, it would be unfair to heap pressure on the young Argentine’s shoulders.

It is believed the United deal-makers are working hard on bringing attacking additions to the squad, with Ajax’s Antony and RB Salzburg’s Benjamin Sesko on the wanted list.

It’s very unlikely Ten Hag will have anyone through the door before the season curtain raiser on Sunday but he will be desperate for reinforcements before the window shuts.

United legend makes this surprising top 4 prediction

The new Premier League season is almost upon us and Manchester United will hope to climb back into the top 4 under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag.

Pre-season results have been positive with players buying into the new manager’s methods and there is an air of optimism surrounding the club once again.

But transfer business has once again been sluggish at Old Trafford with only three new players — Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez — brought in ahead of the start of the league. While the Red Devils are trying to secure more signings (Frenkie de Jong, Antony), there is very little chance that those will happen before August 7.

City to triumph

And according to former defender Rio Ferdinand, that is what is separating the contenders with the pretenders. The former England international was quick to praise derby rivals Manchester City for their dealings so far and even went on to predict another City title triumph come the end of the season.

The Cityzens have brought in the likes of Erling Haaland, Stefan Ortega, Kalvin Phillips, and Julian Alvarez. And due to selling the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko for big bucks as well as a number of fringe players, they have actually recouped more than they have spent.

“I think City will be the team to beat again,” Ferdinand tells Mirror Football, courtesy of BT Sport. “They’ve strengthened again, they’ve got Haaland in and Kalvin Phillips. They’ve lost Raheem Sterling, yes, but they’ve got a deep squad still and players that can play multiple positions. And they’ve got the experience of winning. Liverpool will push them hard again.”

United to pip Chelsea, Arsenal to top 4

The 43-year-old has also predicted Tottenham Hotspur to finish third followed by United. Antonio Conte’s Spurs have spent heavily this summer, bringing in the likes of Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Richarlison, Djed Spence and Clement Lenglet.

Chelsea and Arsenal, just like United have left it late to get their players in. Arsenal are still in a better position having splashed the cash to bring in Zinchenko, Jesus, Matt Turner, Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea have invested £80million in Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly but are still trying to plug multiple gaps in their squad including a gaping hole up top. And that has meant that top 4 will slip them both by, according to the United legend.

“A subplot to those two trying to win the league is between Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs – and possibly Arsenal – for those third and fourth spots. I think that’s going to be a great race, as well.

“I’m sure someone from out of the pack will come up and jump into that area as well, like we saw with West Ham last season. It’s going to be interesting. I think the top six in order will go Man City, Liverpool, Spurs, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal,” Ferdinand predicted.

And the former Leeds player was full of praise for the big clubs who have done their business early and allowed their new recruits time to adapt to the manager’s needs and gel with the rest of the squad. United’s protracted dealings have meant most of Ten Hag’s top targets are yet to join.

“For me, it’s not ideal. United have got a couple of problems going on at the moment in the transfer window. For Man City and Liverpool, it’s been plain sailing. They’ve got their business done, they’re fine, they’re working towards the start of the season from a much cleaner base. Spurs have done well, I think Bissouma will be a fantastic signing – Richarlison as well, getting in those positions up front – two big signings.”

Manchester United Supporters Trust initiate consultations on fan share proposals

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) have begun a series of consultations with members and fans over proposals for the formation of a new fan share scheme.

This is just the latest step in what MUST consider will give supporters a significant stake in the ownership of the club, giving fans greater control in deciding the affairs of United.

MUST have been locked in discussions with the club for more than a year, following a commitment made by Joel Glazer in which he promised that a fan share scheme would be created, in response to the club’s role in the botched European Super League.

Initial reaction to the proposals in place is said to be overwhelmingly positive. According to the Daily Mail, these proposals were accepted by almost 99% of voters who were subjected to an exit poll following a series of MUST member meetings.

In the new scheme, shares would carry the same voting weight as those held by the Glazer family.

The biggest point to take home is that unlike in the past and present where proceeds have gone into the Glazers’ pockets, proceeds from share sales would be reinvested into the club entirely.

Neither the shareholders nor indeed the Glazer family would profit from the scheme if the proposals by MUST come to pass.

MUST’s proposals are in line with their vision of creating the biggest fan shareholder movement in world football. United had an initial version of such a scheme which was wiped out by the infamous Glazer takeover of the club in 2005.

If these proposals come into effect, it would be an immense first step towards realizing such a vision.

There is a need to however exercise caution as there is no guarantee that MUST’s proposals would significantly diminish the stranglehold the Glazer family has on United.

Chris Wheeler reports, “Although MUST accepts the scheme will not change the Glazers’ majority holding, it believes this is a significant move towards a better ownership model.”

If the scheme is approved by both MUST members after its round of consultation and the United board, there is an expectation that the details of the share offers will then be published, as is required by financial regulations.

Ten Hag drops bombshell, calls Ronaldo's behaviour "unacceptable" - Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has dropped a bombshell by condemning Cristiano Ronaldo’s early departure from Old Trafford during Sunday’s friendly game with Rayo Vallecano.

Ronaldo has asked to leave United to join a Champions League team and did not join the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, citing family reasons for his absence.

In his first warm-up game on Sunday, the 37 year old was seen arguing with manager Erik ten Hag during the game and was substituted at half time.

He was then snapped leaving the ground early while the match was still in progress, much to the outrage of fans on social media.

However, a club spokesperson later played this down, saying that Ronaldo had been given permission to leave.

That statement has now been blown out of the water by Ten Hag, who insisted in an interview with Viaplay.nl that he had not given Ronaldo permission to leave during the game, and believed the action was “unacceptable”.

“I don’t certainly accept this. I think this is unacceptable. For everyone,” the manager said.

“We are a team, and then you stay until the game is over.”

Ten Hag has made a very brave decision in calling out the legendary star publicly, especially after the club had said the opposite.

He risks the wrath of his employers and that of his star player.

With Ronaldo seemingly having no Champions League club willing to offer him a contract and having already fallen out with the new manager, it is hard to know what lies in store next for him.

It also remains to be seen whether he will be selected on the bench for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Brighton, with it seeming highly unlikely that he will start the game.

“Set to be completed”: Romano confirms 29-yo United defender’s loan deal close

Sevilla are close to securing Manchester United left-back Alex Telles on a season-long loan.

After the arrival of Tyrell Malacia, the Brazilian left-back has effectively been made third-choice which will result in him not enjoying the game time he wants.

In recent days, it has been reported that he could be departing the club with numerous clubs interested in him.

However, Sevilla are said to be leading the race with the La Liga club closing in on an agreement with Man United.

According to Mucho Deporte through Sport Witness, The Spanish club are working in the ‘final stretch’ to land the Brazilian on a one-year loan deal from the Red Devils.

It’ll be an interesting move for both parties as the club can use him as a full-back and also a winger down the left-hand side.

Fans may remember his debut for United in the Champions League where he featured in an attacking role.

However, since then he has been deployed as a left-back but hasn’t been able to stamp his name into the starting eleven due to the form of Luke Shaw in recent years.

The outlet mentions that upon his return to England, Telles will only have one year on his contract meaning there could be a chance he extends before his move to Spain.

There is an option to extend his contract by a year, with this being the most likely action United will take.

Sevilla have spent their summer signing younger players which is why they will only secure Telles, who is now 29, on a season long loan.

The chances of the deal becoming permanent next June seems unlikely at this stage.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the deal is close, saying:

Brutal: Winter tells United exactly what they must do with Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stay at Manchester United should be brought to an end this summer, according to Henry Winter.

Writing in his column for The Times, Winter suggests the Ronaldo hysteria is something Erik Ten Hag should do without, as he enters his maiden season as United boss.

“Erik ten Hag is the future of Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo is the past,” Winter writes.

“If Ten Hag is to manage United freely, and impose his personality and philosophy fully, then Ronaldo has to leave.

“It is actually best for all parties…What sort of message does it send to the younger United players if the new manager picks a player who wants out?

“This can’t go on.”

Ten Hag has overseen a strong pre-season; an interchangeable front three, without Ronaldo, combining to see United impress going forward and score some eye-catching goals in the process.

However, whilst the tour team were ticking along quite nicely on the pitch, there was seismic Cristiano Ronaldo-sized shadow hanging over the club, off it.

Ronaldo’s public desire to leave was a problem Erik Ten Hag was going to have to face upon the return to Manchester – with personal reasons cited as Ronaldo’s tour absence, the inquest was put on hold.

The story is now inevitably back in full flow. Ronaldo seemingly still has desires to leave the club, yet started the last of the warm up games on Sunday.

A player that clearly doesn’t want to be at the club would usually end with only one outcome. But this is Ronaldo.

He wants to bulk his Champions League numbers but almost all of the potential suitors have distanced themselves from the striker.

As it stands, Ronaldo is only at the United because no-one else wants him.

Ronaldo’s obvious influence on his teammates and the football world as a whole means this is an issue that will shackle Ten Hag until sorted, one way or the other.

Ten Hag would need a replacement, United’s attacking options are thin and could do with an addition with or without Ronaldo. The transfer window ends this month and United’s deal-makers face a huge few weeks. The Ronaldo circus is set to rumble on until then.

Manchester United confirmed Erik ten Hag as their new manager early in the summer, with the club looking to kick start yet another new era. They hoped that the 52-year-old would finally be able bring back success to England’s biggest football club.

Ten Hag, during his stint at Old Trafford, has attempted to recruit both players and members of his back-room staff who he trusts and those who share his ideas and philosophy of football. The Dutchman has mainly approached familiar faces.

The former Ajax boss arrived at his new club with his assistant manager at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag. Recently, reports indicated that the United boss also poached Kevin Keij from the Dutch club to become the Red Devils’ new first-team performance analyst.

Keij worked with Ten Hag for three-and-a-half years at Ajax, starting out initially as a video analyst for the Under-23s before being promoted to the first team set-up. He is now poised to become the latest addition to the manager’s staff at the Theatre of Dreams.

The club and manager’s strategy has heavily focused on Ajax players. Lisandro Martinez became the latest addition to United’s defensive line. The likes of Jurrien Timber, Antony, and Brian Brobbey have also been widely linked with a reunion with their former manager in England.

It seems that Ten Hag’s overtures to his former club employees has not gone down well with everyone there.

Ajax media duo Kokkie and Kale have come out through news outlet AT5, and have brutally lambasted the 52-year-old for lacking respect for Ajax.

Apart from signing three players so far, Manchester United have also added a host of new backroom staff with Benni McCarthy being the latest addition. The South African has joined as a first-team coach.

Despite mischievous social media comments, Erik ten Hag has not had any coach forced upon him and the former Champions League winner’s appointment was rubber-stamped by the Dutchman after a thorough evaluation process.

The 44-year-old has been a life-long United fan and his agent Rob Moore revealed how former AmaZulu and Cape Town City coach landed the gig.

The process first involved an interview in which United Director of Football John Murtough was also present followed by a training assessment.

“Erik didn’t know Benni, neither did Erik’s assistant Mitchell van der Gaag. This was done completely only with Erik,” Moore said on EnergyFM.

“It was a process. He had to be interviewed by Erik and the DoF at Manchester United John Murtough was also in the interview. Benni had to do a session with the United U-23 team under Erik’s watch. Erik was watching and analysing Benni’s suitability.”

ETH has big plans for McCarthy

Moore also revealed that there were quite a few other contenders for the role and it was difficult to land the interview in the first place. The process started back in April after the former Porto striker departed as AmaZulu head coach in March.

“I had a word with Erik that, if you are looking for somebody who is bound to understand your coaching philosophy and tactical approach, it’s Benni because he is a former Ajax (Amsterdam) player,” Moore was quoted as saying by City Press.

Manchester United ended their pre-season tour on Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Spanish opposition Rayo Vallecano. The final game of United’s relatively successful pre-season tour marked the end of the team’s preparations ahead of the new campaign, after matches in Bangkok, Australia, and Oslo against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Atletico Madrid.

All attention by both the club and the fans has now shifted to the Premier League opening fixture on Sunday against Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

On being asked what will be different between last season and this season, McClaren emphasized a cultural reboot that was currently happening within the club and the training ground.

“You have to have a good environment. You have to have a good culture. You have to have players willing to run and that’s the key. Last season, seasons are gone. The history is gone. It’s past.”

“It’s about the future and we’ve got an opportunity to create that in a certain style and Erik wants to see that happen. They [the players] want that discipline, they want to know what their jobs are. They want feedback on it. Because they want to win.”

A new report claims that the decision has almost been made to keep Alejandro Garnacho at Manchester United this season.

United are notably short of attacking options whether or not wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo leaves.

Benjamin Sesko will decide his future in the coming days following interest from Manchester United.

Amad Diallo has the ability to make it at United but must improve his physicality.

That is the assessment of Athletic journalist Carl Anka, who earlier tweeted a video of the Ivorian winning a challenge high up the pitch before using his pace and agility to run at the Rayo Vallecano centre back.

“He’s still only 20 and the attacking talent is there,” said Anka.

Having signed from Atalanta in a deal worth up to £40m, Amad has yet to showcase his talent at the top level, although followers of United’s U23’s will no doubt have been impressed by his performances there.

That ability to play with his back to goal is especially unusual for a player of his size and is among the reasons Erik ten Hag has opted to use him as a centre forward throughout preseason – the other reason being that he has had no one else beyond Anthony Martial, of course.

Anka makes note of his size, but also believes that further education is required regarding Amad’s understanding of attacking space:

The trouble here is that the Red Devils have been fairly hit-and-miss in finding good loan moves for developing players.

While James Garner and Brandon Williams secured adequate gametime, it is notable that those two remained closer to home, with both having had a chance in United’s first team before loan deals were decided upon.

The value of meaningful Premier League minutes in persuading managers to trust United’s loan stars cannot be understated, nor can the value of finding the right club to develop them.

Manchester United’s midfield issues have been partly offset with the addition of Christian Eriksen. The Danish star’s ability on the ball and clever positioning off it are perfectly suited to Erik ten Hag’s methods.

And the Denmark international was given over 80 minutes in United’s last two friendlies combined as the Dutchman tries to get the new recruit up to speed.

Eriksen was not part of the squad that flew off to Bangkok and Australia and missed quite a large chunk of pre-season. But the classy midfield operator certainly did not show any signs of rustiness in either performance.

His passing remains as ethereal as ever and he almost came close to opening his account for the Red Devils against Rayo Vallecano. What was even more impressive was the hard work he put in off the ball with his constant harrying and pressing.

It is clear that Ten Hag trusts the 30-year-old and that was one of the major reasons why the former Tottenham Hotspur star chose to relocate to Manchester despite interest from multiple London outfits including his former club.

“Before I came, I spoke to Ten Hag about how he sees me as a player and where he sees me. He didn’t mention any players. It definitely helped (speaking to him), how he sees football. “Obviously, he puts the team out and picks who’s gonna start, and then from there on you adapt to whoever you’re playing with. But I can’t see any problem playing with Bruno, no. I’ll be happy wherever (I play), I’ve always been like that. I try to adapt to the position I’m playing in,” he added.

And next Sunday, the first official opportunity to walk out in the famous red shirt at the Theatre of Dreams will present itself to Eriksen. For someone who came so close to hanging up his boots, the Brighton game will be something truly special.

Manchester United were expected to wrap up their pre-season engagements with a victory at Old Trafford against La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. But the contest ended 1-1 with Amad Diallo scoring for the hosts with Alvaro Garcia equalising late on in the game.

According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, Ajax are entitled to receive £56,000 each time Martinez steps onto the pitch. This even includes substitute appearances. However, Sunday’s debut does not count on account of it being a friendly.

However, United have included a maximum cap of 30 games-per-season clause in the contract. Last season, United played a total of 49 games across all competitions last season, while the 24-year-old represented Ajax on 37 occasions in all competitions.

But that did not matter to Ferguson, who insisted that his senior players had a responsibility to be aware of the capabilities of the younger players.
