United set for massive £53 million windfall if rivals complete big money signing - report

Manchester United are set to receive a cash injection from Inter Milan following the transfer of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea.

According to Football Italia, Inter owe United €55 million (£47m) as a part of his transfer fee in 2019.

The Italian side are also required to pay a five per cent sell-on fee to United for Lukaku’s future transfer.

The Belgian helped Inter win their first league title in 11 years last season, scoring 24 goals in 36 games.

However, due to the club’s financial situation, they need to generate cash through sales.

The Nerazzurri are set to accept a €130 million (£111m) bid from Chelsea, according to reports.

Lukaku subsequently split from his old agent Mino Raiola, who brokered the United move, and is now represented by Federico Pastorello, who enjoys a good relationship with Chelsea.

If the deal goes through, Man United could well be in for a huge financial boost – some £53 million – possibly allowing them to obtain their remaining transfer targets.

After completing deals for Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, the Red Devils are in the market for a midfielder and a right-back.

As per The Athletic, United’s future incomings currently depend solely on sales.

Names like Saul Niguez, Eduardo Camavinga and Ruben Neves are all on United’s radar, but the club needs to sell players to generate funds.

Moreover, Paul Pogba is set to start the season at Old Trafford as he ponders his options before the end of the transfer window, claim The Telegraph, so any income from a sale there is unlikely.

Samuel Luckhurst (Manchester Evening News) discussed United’s interest in Kieran Trippier in a recent article:

“If Trippier happens, that will be towards the end of the window. There’s an emphasis on outgoings.”

“I know Telles is injured, and he will be out until September. Williams still wants to go on loan.”

“Dalot could go on loan, or he could go permanently. There is an uncertainty, to say the least, about two or three of the full-backs we have just mentioned there.”

Chelsea could therefore do United a big favour if they do land Lukaku, as it might mean United would not have to sell before they buy.

Arsenal are still pushing ahead on securing a major transfer double deal with just over a week until the start of the new Premier League season.

Top officials are looking to make breakthrough talks with Sheffield United for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and midfielder Sander Berge.

Sheffield United value England stopper Ramsdale at near £40million and Norwegian international Berge at £35million – the Blades are in no rush to cash-in despite being relegated and without their valuations being met, would rather see the duo push the club back to England’s top tier.

Arsenal on the other hand may have to sell to be able to finance the deals that could total £75m, with Hector Bellerin and Granit Xhaka still subject of transfer speculation.

According to a report in the Express the Gunners are far from done spending big money this summer and are making the Sheffield United pair priority signings.

Desperate times: Solskjaer may be forced to use unwanted star

Manchester United are reportedly holding firm in their valuation of Diogo Dalot amid interest from AC Milan.

The young full-back was originally brought into the club by former manager Jose Mourinho but it seems as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t a big fan.

The legendary Norwegian opted to make Aaron Wan-Bissaka amongst his first few signings, immediately targetting the need for a right-back.

Dalot was one of Europe’s highest-rated prospects when Mourinho signed him but unfortunately he hasn’t quite managed to turn that potential into talent.

Injuries can be blamed but some would also claim he wasn’t given enough opportunities to show what he can do once he was deemed fit.

According to The Athletic, Milan wanted to re-sign Dalot for another year on loan but the Red Devils view him as an asset who could be sold, or if he stays it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

According to Tuttosport via SportWitness, Solskjaer’s side are against a loan move unless they can get €5m plus an obligation to buy, though the Italian giants are wary over their finances.

According to MilanLive, Manchester United are asking for between €18m-€20m, leaving Milan to hope that by the end of the transfer window, a discounted price would be offered.

The Peoples Person last covered Dalot news a week ago when it was being reported even then that a new loan offer was going to come in for him.

It seems as though the former Porto man will be part of this transfer saga right until the end and only then he will know his future.

For the time being, it looks as though unless Milan up their offer for Dalot and show they’re serious about signing him then he will stay at Old Trafford.

Having that depth can only be a good thing and Wan-Bissaka did show signs of needing rest last season so it could all work out positively either way.

Quarantine clarified: When Varane is expected to finally complete his United move

Raphael Varane is expected to arrive in Manchester today but may then have to quarantine before undergoing a medical ahead of completing his transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano:

‘Raphaël Varane update. He’s ready to fly to Manchester today. The Visa issue is finally to be resolved in the next few hours – original plan was to fly earlier this week.

Now: quarantine, medical and then official announcement. Contract [2025] into his agents hands.’

The issue that now remains confused is quarantine. It has been suggested that the 28-year-old will be required to quarantine for five days, but the government has announced changes today to quarantine requirements for people returning from France and Spain.

The new rule comes into effect on Sunday at 4am, which if it applies to Varane, would mean he would be able to attend his medical on Monday if he delayed travelling until Sunday.

If he arrives today, five days’ quarantine would mean that he would not be able to go to Carrington until one day later.

Either way, it would seem that the deal will be completed early next week, leaving the player with just three or four days to train with his teammates ahead of United’s opening Premier League match against Leeds a week on Saturday.

Whether United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will consider that long enough to allow the Frenchman to make his debut could depend on training.

Solskjaer recently admitted he ‘doesn’t have a Scooby-Doo’ (clue) about his returning players’ fitness levels and Varane will be even more of a mystery in that regard.

There is also the issue of learning tactics and formations and forming a sufficient understanding with the rest of the defence.

Overall, it seems unlikely that the World Cup winner will be in the starting line-up on August 14th and it is more likely that fans will, if anything, see a short cameo debut from the substitute’s bench.

Sources reveal Pogba's true intentions regarding PSG move - report

It is looking increasingly likely that Paul Pogba will stay at Manchester United next season.

The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his contract and has, as yet, not signed the new deal that has been offered by the Red Devils. French giants Paris Saint Germain have been credited with interest in signing the player.

But both The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath and The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell do not believe the Frenchman will join PSG for a number of different reasons.

First, according to Whitwell, ‘there are people with knowledge of the situation who doubt whether Pogba truly wants to leave the Premier League for Ligue 1.

‘Although it would represent a return to his roots, Pogba and his family are settled in the Manchester area,’ the reporter says.

‘The interest from PSG would certainly help Pogba’s case for improved terms at Old Trafford, where he currently earns around £290,000 per week, and talks have been held about fresh terms.

‘There is a possibility those discussions stretch into the start of the season, just as they did with De Gea, who signed his current deal on September 16, 2019.’

McGrath on the other hand describes a move to Paris as ‘not straightforward’ and also believes that Pogba wants to weigh up his options.

Pogba ‘has never formally rejected United’s contract offer for him to stay at the club but is ready to take his time over his next move,’ McGrath notes.

‘[The August 31 transfer deadline] will give United a window of opportunity where Pogba is playing in front of supporters again and they can make their feelings clear on whether they want him to stay at Old Trafford in the long-term.’

Meanwhile in France, the word is that United’s asking price is going to rule out any chance of a move to the French giants in any case.

‘The Frenchman will not be able to leave Manchester United for a sum less than €75 – €100 million (£64m-£86m),’ according to Le Parisien via Sport Witness.

This is a sum that PSG literally cannot afford to pay unless they were to make a number of sales, which seems unlikely at this stage.

Pogba will be 29 at the end of 2021/22 and with a good season behind him at Old Trafford, he may still be just young enough to attract the attentions of the likes of his dream team, Real Madrid. However, if he does play consistently well enough to put himself in the shop window, that can only benefit United, even if only in the short term.

Manchester United’s summer transfer business has been as impressive as anyone in Europe, with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane recruited quite early.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Sam Anka recently spoke about United’s new signings and expectations for the upcoming season.

Talking about the latest addition, Raphael Varane, Anka labelled him as one of the most decorated centre backs in world football and “the perfect” partner for Harry Maguire.

“He is blessed with incredible recovery pace, which will allow any football club that has him to play with a high line.”

“He is very good in one-on-one defending, capable of winning duels both on the ground and in the air.”

“Varane is also very capable at both, marking a man and marshalling the space- something that Man United have been trying to get better at.”

At an initial fee of £34.2 million, United would be getting a bargain.

The 2018 World Cup champion has won almost every accolade at the club level.

In Sancho, United have in their team one of the best right-sided attackers in the world, claims Anka.

He mentions United’s eagerness to strengthen the right-wing position.

With Marcus Rashford and Daniel James‘ preference to play on the left, United lacked the creativity on the opposite flank.

Sancho should solve a lot of those issues and make the club a consistent top-four candidate.

However, according to Anka, United are still two signings away from becoming genuine title contenders.

“I can see these signings taking United from a points total of 74 to 80, or 82. I can’t quite see United getting those extra 4 to 6 points to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.”

With just over a week left for the start of the season, the Red Devils are in the market for a midfielder and a right-back.

No takers: United struggle to find buyers for unwanted star

Manchester United have reportedly set a price for midfielder Andreas Pereira this summer.

According to Richard Fay (Manchester Evening News), the club values Pereira at £25 million.

Pereira broke into United’s senior team in 2015.

Since then, he has been loaned out to three different clubs: Granada, Valencia, and Lazio.

The 25-year-old was handed a new four-year contract in 2019, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to bring out the best in him.

The player has shown promise on many occasions but has failed to deliver consistent performances for Man United.

In 75 appearances for the club, Pereira managed to score just four goals despite playing as an advanced midfielder for most of the time.

The Brazilian, however, was at his absolute best in United’s 2-2 draw against Brentford in last Wednesday’s pre-season friendly.

Pereira rattled the net with a 30-yard volley, causing Old Trafford to erupt.

Speaking to MUTV, he added: “As soon as Jesse hit it, it came off the goalkeeper, and I thought ‘I might have a chance here, and as soon as I hit it, it felt good straight away.

“It was a nice feeling, having the fans back in and scoring the goal.”

In another interview with TNT Sports, Pereira expressed his desire to play for his country.

“My biggest dream is to play a World Cup with the Selecao, and I know that with continuity and hard work, I can get there once again.

“Especially with my long-distance kick, which is rare in Brazilian football.”

Man United’s search for a new midfielder this window could open the door for the Brazilian to leave.

At this stage of his career, it would be ideal for Pereira to find regular game time at another club.

Manchester United star Axel Tuanzebe is reportedly closing in on a move to Aston Villa as he searches for regular first-team football.

The talented defender is just one of a few players who have been deemed surplus to the squad following the arrivals of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.

United have the likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Phil Jones, and the aforementioned Frenchman as the options for the centre-back spot.

Given how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plays with a regular four-man defence, that leaves little room for Tuanzebe and shows how the squad is overstocked in that department.

The legendary Norwegian has often praised the academy graduate and has even handed him the captaincy on one or two occasions during low-key games.

According to The Athletic, Tuanzebe is set to extend his contract with the Red Devils to 2023 with the option for an additional year before making the move to Villa.

It’s understood the loan switch could become permanent and the young Englishman backs himself to win a starting XI spot with his potential new club.

At the minute Dean Smith sees him as a player who can provide cover at centre-back and right-back and negotiations have gone smoothly due to Manchester United’s desire to see him play regularly.

Goals, goals, goals: Man United's pacy attackers set to benefit from rule changes

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is changing once again in a bid to restore clarity over controversial penalties and offside decisions.

Back in June, The Peoples Person reported that there would be changes to VAR heading into the new season and those changes have become clear.

The system was introduced two seasons ago and has undergone countless changes to the way it operates with many still upset and annoyed over some of the controversial decisions seen.

According to the Express, huge changes will be happening to try and cut the penalty mistakes in the new season.

Strikers will no longer be able to win penalties by tripping over trailing legs, which to many fans across the country was seen as an unfair decision.

As well as this, narrow offsides including ‘toenail offsides’ and ‘armpit offsides’ will not be given as VAR will be ditching the pixel-perfect cross lines which were used at the European Championships.

Mike Riley, who currently serves as the general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited is currently going on tour across the Premier League clubs speaking about the new rules that have come into place.

According to the official Man United websitee, Riley spoke to the media, clearing up the controversial mistakes last season.

He said: “Fundamentally, we want the approach to be one that best allows the players to go out and express themselves, allows the Premier League games to flow and means the refereeing team, both as referee and as VAR, don’t intervene for the trivial offences.

“Let’s create a free-flowing game, where the threshold is slightly higher than it was last season.

“On marginal offside, we’ve now effectively re-introduced the benefit of the doubt to the attacking player.

“Where we have a really close offside decision, we carry on following the same process that we did last season with the one-pixel lines; we’ll then put on the thicker broadcast lines and, where they overlap, those situations will now be deemed as onside.”

Now it has been confirmed, fans will be hoping that the referees will cut the controversially disallowed goals out of the game and be hopeful that football will be heading into a future that is more free-flowing like it was pre-VAR.

Manchester United great Gary Neville has had his say on the club’s new back four in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw.

Fans will remember just a few seasons ago how it was normal for the team to line up with the likes of Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Antonio Valencia as the first-choice defence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is largely responsible for the upgrade, having purchased three of the aforementioned players and breathing life into the fourth in Shaw.

As a pundit, Neville has watched and discussed United’s predicaments many times in the past and it’s safe to say he’s a clear supporter of the legendary Norwegian.

Supporters will be hoping the new-look defence will finally help solidify a backline that has often been leaky in the past.

According to Manchester Evening News, Neville said: “I think Varane is really exciting. Sancho is also exciting, but that was almost inevitable that it was going to happen.

“United have become that little bit more measured in these last two or three years. I think Ole has brought that to the club. They are not getting players for the sake of it.

“Varane is exciting. I think last season every United fan, every commentator, every pundit, every analyst that watched United said that they needed a partner for Harry Maguire — and they have got one.

“He is a good age, has got massive experience and has got a good centre-back alongside him. Actually, they have got a good back-four, so he is not coming into a team that he will have to hold together.

“You would argue that he is the last piece of the jigsaw in the sense that the rest of them are still doing a pretty good job.

“[Victor] Lindelof, [Eric] Bailly did a good job alongside Maguire, but they weren’t that little bit extra that you need.

“I think Maguire will come out of this tournament with England strong and more confident than ever before. He has got a great centre-back partner alongside him now in Varane.

“He has played at Real Madrid in the biggest games that you can ever play in. For me, they have got two brilliant centre-backs.

“If they can stay fit together, and the two full-backs as well, who have got great energy as well.

“Both of them are great defenders and one of them is great going forward in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is definitely improving.”

Former Manchester United defenders Wes Brown and David May have had their say on Raphael Varane’s move to the club.

Brown is no stranger to Man United having appeared over 200 times in the league and 362 times altogether.

During his time at the club, Brown won the Premier League five times, the Champions League twice, and collected six other trophies in multiple competitions.

Like Brown, May also has a decorated career at United winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

Varane is coming to United with a rewarding CV as well, having won multiple La Ligas, Champions Leagues, and other trophies from domestic competitions.

According to Manchester Evening News, Brown and May recently appeared on MUTV which is an app owned by Manchester United to discuss the recent arrival of Varane.

Brown, who came through the academy and enjoyed a good career at United had his say about what he thinks about the latest arrival: “Look at the medals he’s won. Signing for United won’t faze him.

“We needed another centre-back and to get hold of Varane is a massive signing for Ole, at a fantastic price.

“He’s played in big games at one of the best teams in the world, so he knows how to handle pressure.

“I’m really excited and it makes great pressure on the rest of the lads, it will step everyone else’s game up.”

Brown certainly has a lot of praise towards Solskjaer for securing the 28-year-old, especially from a top club like Real Madrid.

May, who joined United in 1994 after a successful promotion to the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers a couple of seasons before, had his say on the quality of Varane: “They don’t come much better than Varane.

“He will bring experience and calmness, he’s a different class on the ball and everyone’s seen that. He’s the type of player that United needed.

“He will slot in alongside Harry Maguire. I think it’s a great signing from Ole. The club have done well to get it done quickly.”

United fans will be even more excited after hearing the opinions of two defenders who had joy winning trophies at the club.

Out soon?: Premier League clubs battle for Manchester United academy graduate

Aston Villa have entered discussions with Manchester United regarding the loan signing of Axel Tuanzebe, according to the Daily Mail.

Having previously spent two loan spells at the Birmingham club, Tuanzebe left a lasting impression that has seen Aston Villa return for his services.

With the potential sale of Jack Grealish, Villa are expected to look to bolster their squad, setting their sights on the United man.

United are requesting a pricey loan fee though, as the Daily Mail says: “Villa are in discussions with United to sign centre-back Tuanzebe on a season loan that would still cost around £5million .”

As previously reported, Newcastle United are also chasing the young defender’s signature.

With the two clubs battling it out for Tuanzebe, the academy graduate will be able to draw on his previous loan experiences when choosing his next club.

Dean Smith, manager of Aston Villa, and Steve Bruce, manager of Newcastle United, have both managed Tuanzebe during his past spells at Villa Park.

Given how he enjoyed more of a successful period under Dean Smith, playing at centre-back alongside Tyrone Mings, Villa may have the edge in convincing Tuanzebe. In comparison, Bruce shifted the youngster around often deploying him at right-back.

With Mings, the England international, still present in the Villa side, Tuanzebe may be excited by the prospects of rekindling their partnership.

Such an idea may be hampered by the emergence of Ezri Konsa though. The 23-year-old centre-back is coming off the back of a very impressive season as a stalwart in Villa’s side.

At the same age as Tuanzebe and performing well, Villa are likely to favour their own player over a loanee.

As a result, the Rochdale native could find himself on the bench at Villa, leading to the same issue of playing time which has left him disgruntled at United.

Whichever ever club is ultimately chosen, Tuanzebe will be wise to weigh up the options to ensure he is given the best opportunity to show his talent.

Manchester United star David de Gea will reportedly stay put according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The experienced Spaniard has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford but not to any one club in particular.

After all, De Gea earns rather high wages at United and that was always going to cause problems in offloading him.

The former Atletico Madrid man saw his undisputed number one spot be taken over by academy graduate Dean Henderson.

Reports over De Gea’s future have died down of late and it looks like the rumours are set to die down for good.

Pogba returning to training is a timely boost as the team gear up to face Everton in the last pre-season training before the Premier League begins.

It’s even more of a boost that he linked up with his teammates in the Scotland training camp so that he can be put their his paces rather than perhaps the easier training that would have taken place in Manchester.

Nonetheless, the hope is Pogba can be deemed fit quickly so that he can play a part in the clash vs Leeds United.

United face taking on their bitter rivals with a host of first-team stars not yet sharp enough for the rigours of English football.

Inspiring young United hero embarks on new journey in lower leagues

Former Manchester United defender Max Taylor has signed for League Two club Rochdale.
The 21-year-old left United earlier this summer to embark on a new challenge after struggling to break into the first team.

Taylor spent time earlier this year on trial at Portsmouth.

The young centre-back saw loan deals to MK Dons and then Macclesfield FC fall through last summer before clinching a move to National League side Kidderminster.

Due to the cancellation of non-league football, his loan spell came to an end.

Taylor was diagnosed with testicular cancer in November 2018 and underwent chemotherapy.

Having fully recovered and following a successful trial period during which he played three pre-season friendlies, Taylor has put pen to paper on an initial one-year deal with the League Two club.

On joining Rochdale, Taylor said: “I’m very happy to get everything over the line. I’ve loved the feeling around the club.”

“I think everyone wants to get going now. We’ve had a good pre-season, and all the lads have got good minutes under their belts.”

Manager Robbie Stockdale is over the moon about signing the tenacious, young defender.

He said: “I’m really pleased to have secured the services of Max.”

“He been with us for a week to ten days now, and he has impressed everybody with his attitude on and off the pitch, as well as his ability.”

“He is relishing the fact that he’s going to get opportunities to play first-team football.”

After facing adversity at such a young age, Taylor has shown the courage to overcome cancer.

Brilliant news for United fans as key men report for training

Manchester United’s first team stars are gradually returning to pre-season training, in what is a timely boost for boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The first competitive match, at home to Leeds United, is now just 11 days away and United’s fringe players have had a mixed pre-season thus far.

A promising win at Wayne Rooney‘s Derby County and enjoyable draw against newly promoted Brentford came either side of a 4-2 drubbing at the hands of QPR.

The MEN has covered player availability, with a host of stellar names seen as being close to a return to first team action.

Of Solskjaer’s Euro 2020 participants, United fans can expect Victor Lindelof, David de Gea and Harry Maguire to get some minutes in the upcoming friendly against Everton.

All three were back in full training on the 2nd of August.

Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba are also back from their summer break, although it’s not clear if either have joined up with the rest of the squad yet.

In Shaw’s case he’s recovering from broken ribs sustained on England duty, so could be tentatively easing his way back towards full capacity.

Reds’ talisman Bruno Fernandes started training last week, so could well be expected to feature at Old Trafford this weekend.

Meanwhile, exciting new signing Jadon Sancho is expected to link up with his new team mates this week, as he prepares to unleash his dazzling skills on English full-backs.

Additionally, Edinson Cavani and Fred will make their belated returns from Copa America duties this week, with both expected back to be working towards regaining match-fitness.

There’s a strong possibility that the side selected on Saturday will bear a close resemblance to the expected XI for the hotly-anticipated Pennines derby.

It’s to be hoped that Solskjaer’s men are battle ready after a second consecutive summer of disjointed preparation.

Good news, bad news: Man United face more defensive trouble

Manchester United fans have reportedly been given good news and bad news in regards to the fitness of Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The defensive duo are key players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s preferred backline but there are doubts over whether or not they can feature in the early stages of the season.

United are in a worrying position at the minute as they’ve already played three out of four of their pre-season friendlies but their first-team stars have hardly featured in any.

The aftermath of the Euros has meant Solskjaer does not really have his squad at the stage he would like them to be, particularly after having to cancel a friendly due to a Covid-19 scare.

Although he has most of his squad back this week, most are just starting to get going and probably won’t feature in the opener vs Leeds United.

According to ESPN, Wan-Bissaka has picked up an injury but was deemed fit enough to travel with the squad for the pre-season camp in Scotland.

The young Englishman has been given an individual training program in order to protect him ahead of the new campaign.

Meanwhile, Shaw was also given the green light by the medical team to train fully, having suffered a rib injury during the Euros.

The former Crystal Palace man is arguably one of the best one v one defenders in the game and his lack of concentration or positioning at times has been confused here as him being incapable of defending.

Wan-Bissaka seems to be getting a lot of criticism of late and it appears as though some of it is rather undeserved.

Should he not be fit in time for the clash vs Leeds, he will be sorely missed and there’s a reason why he’s the team’s undisputed right-back.

Attacking star has surprisingly forced himself into Man United's plans this season

West Ham United have reportedly given up their pursuit of Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.

According to Sky Sports, the Hammers believe that they have just a ten per cent chance of signing the Englishman.

The 28 year old joined West Ham United on loan last January for half the season.

Lingard lit up the London Stadium, scoring nine goals and registering four assists in the 16 games played.

His contributions were a significant factor in West Ham qualifying for the Europa League.

Hammers manager David Moyes is keen to keep Lingard at the club.

In a pre-match press conference before the last game of the Premier League season against Southampton, he stated, “I couldn’t say any more than I’m hopeful Jesse might want to come here, that’s up to Manchester United, but he’s been a positive signing.”

Lingard is now back in pre-season training with Manchester United, featuring in their recent warm-up games against Derby County, Queens Park Rangers and Brentford.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expects the 28 year old to be at the club next season.

In his post-match interview following United’s 2-1 friendly win over Derby , he said:

“There’s nothing better than seeing players willing to fight for their place.”

“Of course, what he did towards the end of the season, that is the true Jesse.”

“That’s what we know he is capable of. I think we saw towards the end that we lacked maybe some options at times.”

“He’s still in my plans. I expect him at Man Utd at the start of the season.”

ESPN’s recent article mentions Lingard among ten other players who could be moved on from the club in order to facilitate funds to buy a midfielder and a right-back.

With a year left on his contract, United value the Englishman at £30 million.

Journalist Jonathan Shrager is aware of interest from foreign clubs, whilst also mentioning West Ham’s acceptance that a deal seems unlikely.

Not Lingard: West Ham in the hunt for second Man United star - report

Long-term absentee Phil Jones is back in training for Manchester United, but what happens next is shrouded in doubt.

Jones has not played for the Red Devils since January 2020 and has been blighted by a series of injuries that have seen him play only eight games since the 2018/19 season.

His latest setback, a knee injury, kept him out for the whole of last season but he is now fit again and has joined the squad at their summer training camp in Scotland.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that he wants Jones to stay at the club, saying to the club’s official website:

‘Of course, with Raphael coming in, I can see Axel [Tuanzebe] going out [on loan], because I have Varane, Maguire, Lindelof and Eric Bailly and Phil Jones is coming back in.’

‘[Jones] is due to start training over the weekend when we’ve got everyone in on Monday, which is a big plus for him.

‘I’ve had similar troubles in my career. He’s such a professional, good lad, and it’s great to see him ready to train again and hopefully he can first of all train with us and then hopefully get game time soon.’

However, reports suggest that Solskjaer would ideally like to offload the former England man.

That, however, is acknowledged to be very difficult given his lack of football over the past two years and his woeful injury record.

United are believed to be willing to offer Jones a free transfer but even then, the buying club would need to match his £75,000 per week salary – which is not a fortune, but would represent a gamble.

‘Jones first fell out of favour under Solskjaer as Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire stamped their authorities as first-choice centre-halves, while Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe are the back-up options in that position,’ The Mail notes.

‘That competition means Jones is likely to seek a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with reports linking West Ham with a move for the defender on a free transfer.

‘The move would see Jones reunite with Hammers boss David Moyes, who worked with the centre-back during his brief spell as Red Devils boss between the summer of 2013 and April 2014.’

United to battle Spanish giants for free transfer of World Class star

Reports in Spain have indicated that Real Madrid will go head-to-head with Manchester United for the services of Leon Goretzka, but not until next year.

Fresh from signing David Alaba on a free transfer, AS reports that Los Blancos are keen to repeat the trick for the in-demand Bayern Munich midfielder.

However, there is optimism in Bavaria that Goretzka will spurn a growing list of suitors and instead choose to extend his stay with the German super club.

Bayern club president Herbert Hainer is quoted as saying, “We are in good talks with them [with Goretzka and Kimmich]…more conversations can be had to find a solution in the last weeks.”

New Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is also quoted as being confident the midfield powerhouse will commit his long-term future to the club.

Nagelsmann said, “Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident.

“There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension.

“I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.”

It’s interesting that Nagelsmann should bring up the ‘topics’ involved for a contract extension and, perhaps, hints at an explanation for his club’s failure to resolve the midfielder’s future.

It’s widely believed that Goretzka expects a salary to match his status as one of the most important players at the Allianz Arena.

The Peoples Person has covered reports suggesting the international ace wants to remain in the Bundesliga, however United are said to have enticed his representatives with a bigger wage offer.

Although the smart money would be on the player getting what he wants and staying in Germany, Bayern will need to act quickly to head off growing interest from some of Europe’s elite clubs.

United’s best chance to land the player could be to make serious on-field progress next season, to show Goretzka that Old Trafford could be the perfect place to realise both his sporting and financial ambitions.
