United to battle Spanish giants for free transfer of World Class star

Reports in Spain have indicated that Real Madrid will go head-to-head with Manchester United for the services of Leon Goretzka, but not until next year.

Fresh from signing David Alaba on a free transfer, AS reports that Los Blancos are keen to repeat the trick for the in-demand Bayern Munich midfielder.

However, there is optimism in Bavaria that Goretzka will spurn a growing list of suitors and instead choose to extend his stay with the German super club.

Bayern club president Herbert Hainer is quoted as saying, “We are in good talks with them [with Goretzka and Kimmich]…more conversations can be had to find a solution in the last weeks.”

New Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is also quoted as being confident the midfield powerhouse will commit his long-term future to the club.

Nagelsmann said, “Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident.

“There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension.

“I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.”

It’s interesting that Nagelsmann should bring up the ‘topics’ involved for a contract extension and, perhaps, hints at an explanation for his club’s failure to resolve the midfielder’s future.

It’s widely believed that Goretzka expects a salary to match his status as one of the most important players at the Allianz Arena.

The Peoples Person has covered reports suggesting the international ace wants to remain in the Bundesliga, however United are said to have enticed his representatives with a bigger wage offer.

Although the smart money would be on the player getting what he wants and staying in Germany, Bayern will need to act quickly to head off growing interest from some of Europe’s elite clubs.

United’s best chance to land the player could be to make serious on-field progress next season, to show Goretzka that Old Trafford could be the perfect place to realise both his sporting and financial ambitions.

Man United must start to take action as 13 stars face the axe

With the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane tied up, Manchester United are turning their attention to outgoing transfers before contemplating any new arrivals.

According to a recent article by ESPN, up to 10 senior squad members could be sold this summer and have, effectively, been made available for sale.

The 10 are Jesse Lingard, Brandon Williams, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot, Phil Jones, Alex Telles, Andreas Pereira, Daniel James, Axel Tuanzebe and Paul Pogba.

It seems unlikely in our view, although not impossible, that either Alex Telles or Anthony Martial will be sold this summer as ESPN suggest. However, there are names that are missing from the list that, arguably, could and should also be included if the right deal were to come along.

United’s addition of Tom Heaton to the goalkeeping ranks this summer was indicative that either Dean Henderson or David de Gea might leave as well, with De Gea more fancied for a move.

Rumours have died down of late, but it remains the case that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stated last season that the pair would not share duties again this term and Heaton’s arrival is surely an indication that his opinion hasn’t changed.

Another player who could leave is Nemanja Matic. United are reportedly desperate to sign a specialist holding midfielder so that they can change to a 4-3-3 formation and do without the double pivot of Scott McTominay and Fred.

Should such a player be acquired, it would push Matic even further back in the pecking order and at 33 years of age he may prefer to move on, with a third reunion with José Mourinho at Roma one mooted option.

Eric Bailly, who like Matic has recently signed a contract extension, could also be sold. With Varane’s arrival he will now likely be fourth choice centre back and at 27 years of age, his career is starting to pass him by. Whilst Tuanzebe is on ESPN’s list, arguably Bailly is the more logical sale at this stage with the younger man likelier to benefit from a loan move.

This brings the full list of possible sales to 13. In many cases, though, salaries will provide a major stumbling block to any potential move.

United have in recent years tended to give players three year or more contract extensions to protect their value. But this tactic has and will backfire badly if that salary level is one that buying clubs cannot match.

This is arguably the situation in many of the thirteen cases listed. United could, as they did with Alexis Sanchez and Wayne Rooney, buy out the rest of the contract to offload the player or offer some sort of settlement. But this in turn reduces profit on the sale.

The club’s negotiators have also been accused of being unrealistic in the asking price they have set for a number of players, even on loan deals. Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot for example are wanted by a number of clubs but the fees demanded are proving to be prohibitive.

There is therefore a lot for United to sort out to trim down the squad in time for the new season and to leave time to use the released funds to buy one or two more reinforcements. A lot more pragmatism and some tough decisions will need to be made to avoid carrying a massively overpopulated senior group through the 2021/22 campaign.

Varane latest: When United fans will see player arrive for medical

Manchester United fans have been told they reportedly may have to wait even longer than anticipated to see Raphael Varane in action.

The Real Madrid star has agreed to a transfer subject to a medical and supporters were keen to see him in red as soon as possible.

Unfortunately Varane’s situation is complicated due to both, post-Brexit rules as well as quarantine rules due to Covid-19.

United certainly would have preferred to have the sensational Frenchman in the country by now so that he could potentially feature in the friendly vs Everton on the 7th.

Now it appears as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be lucky to have the player available for the club’s Premier League opener vs Leeds United.

According to The Telegraph, Varane still didn’t travel to Manchester on Monday as he waiting for his visa problems to be sorted out.

It’s understood even after that matter is resolved, he would have to quarantine, and only then he can go through a medical. This could mean he doesn’t complete his transfer until next week.

The Peoples Person last reported on Varane when French experts warned he would need time to adjust to his new surroundings.

It appears Solskjaer will be forced into selecting the XI that has had the most minutes or is the fittest as opposed to who is the most talented or even the XI that is his preference.

The legendary Norwegian has already warned anyone who shows up unfit for pre-season training will essentially be in trouble.

Manchester United’s stars have been posting plenty of images and videos of themselves exercising even during their holidays so the hope is the squad isn’t in a bad place physically.

Nonetheless, time will tell who’s ready and who isn’t and Solskjaer must be dreading coming up against an energetic and fit Leeds United.

From Spain: United rocked by transfer bombshell as Barcelona lead star chase

Reports in Spain have downplayed the likelihood of Saul Niguez joining Manchester United this summer.

As covered by The Peoples Person, parts of the British media have gone as far as to suggest the Spaniard’s agents were due in England this week to finalise a move to a Premier League club.

Spanish daily AS has since scotched that story and, in a further blow to United fans, has claimed that Saul is holding out for a switch to Barcelona.

The report states that, “Barca continues to be the best placed to win the services of the midfielder.

“Despite the rumours that come from England, the Premier League clubs have not yet made a move to incorporate the Rojiblanco player.

“Chelsea, Liverpool and United do have him among their options, but none have taken a firm step for him.”

Of the Barcelona interest they add, “The destination that Saul likes most is the Camp Nou. Since Barca’s interest, his only wish is to wear a blaugrana.”

United have been linked with several midfielders since the summer window opened, with West Ham’s Declan Rice, Wolves’ Ruben Neves and Rennes’ Eduardo Camavinga thought to be possible targets.

However, rumours about the Old Trafford club’s interest in Saul have persisted over a two-year period and have moved into overdrive since the beginning of the summer.

The Spanish international has gone from being an indispensable part of the Atletico side to something of a bit-part player in recent months.

Last season he started just 11 games for Diego Simeone’s eventual champions, prompting an increase in speculation about his prospects in Madrid.

It is thought that the midfielder could now be available for a reduced fee of around £45m.

French experts send strong warning to Man United fans about Varane

The French football community are in two minds as to whether Raphael Varane is making a good choice in leaving Real Madrid to join Manchester United.

Footmercato.net’s journalists are divided on the issue and have dedicated an article to the debate.

Their arguments that the 28-year-old has made the right decision include:

‘First of all, the Frenchman has had the courage to take the plunge.

‘The prospect of rubbing shoulders with the formidable Premier League, after having cracked La Liga, therefore appears to be a coherent choice for a player at the height of his career.

‘The 2018 world champion is joining a club and a team overflowing with ambition and not hesitating to back themselves to prove it and achieve their goals.

‘Spurred on by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has achieved promising and interesting things since taking office at MU, the Red Devils have a collective with the ability to take it up a notch.

‘Alongside Sergio Ramos, he formed one of the most successful partnerships in the football world for several years. But now, the Spaniard has aged and Varane, in his comfort zone, no longer seemed as imperial as he used to be with Real. He has been through a few difficult slumps.

‘An end of the cycle is approaching or has been reached at the Merengues. It was probably the right time to look elsewhere and taste the joys of English football in the north of Her Majesty’s Kingdom [and to] show everyone in football that he is still one of the best central defenders in the world.’

Footmercato then put forward the arguments that this may be a mistake for the defender:

‘After ten contested seasons … the former Lensois had everything to become the new leader of Real’s rearguard, after the departure of Sergio Ramos to Paris Saint-Germain.

‘And in Spain, the local press remains unanimous. While the Madrid workforce is under reconstruction, the Lille native would have become the new captain.’

There is no doubt: the English Championship is of a different intensity to what he experienced in Spain, with strong and tall attackers, like Harry Kane (1.88 m) or Dominic Calvert-Lewin (1.87 m) who are used to provoking defenders in the duel.

‘To assimilate to the Premier League and take leadership in this Mancunian partnership that he will share with captain Harry Maguire, Raphaël Varane will also need several months of adaptation. Even for a player of his calibre. The timing is perilous just over a year before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.’

That period of adaptation will also be crucial to United. A lack of pre-season preparation will not help to build an understanding with Maguire at the back and there will certainly be a baptism of fire awaiting if Varane takes to the field against old rivals Leeds on August 14th for the first time in a red shirt.

Too soon: Solskjaer makes quick decision about young star’s future

Manchester United youngster Joe Hugill has done nothing but impressed and progressed since his arrival to the academy from Sunderland.

The 17-year-old striker had a fruitful 2020-21 campaign since he joined in October 2020 scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances for the U23’s Premier League 2 season according to transfermarkt.

He then narrowly missed out on being promoted to the first team last season after a minor injury meant he couldn’t feature for the first-team squad at the backend of last season.

However, that didn’t stop his rapid development as Hugill as well as his academy teammate Charlie McNeill secured long term contracts at the club a little over a week ago.

Hugill featured regularly on the bench during the first team’s pre-season campaign but got some brief chancces towards the end of some matches as some of the main options were still on international duty.

He didn’t contribute much to the games but the experience is what is valuable for the player here as he got to mix in with the first team for the very first time.

On Saturday, Hugill played in a U23 friendly vs Championship side Hull City in a 2-0 loss to mark his return to academy action since training with the first team.

In an article from the Manchester Evening News, Hugill and McNeill’s next steps are heavily discussed after securing long term contracts at the club.

According to the article, United coaches were impressed with the duo and how they adapted their game to suit the physical defences of the Premier League 2.

However, the article in The MEN suggests that the first team exposure given in this handful of pre-season games may have been a little too much, too soon for the 17-year-old.

Hugill replaced Mason Greenwood at halftime when United faced Derby in the preseason opener, but then was substituted again 35 minutes later. After that match, game time became very limited as some senior players impressed and others came back from the break. At QPR, he played only 12 minutes and then was an unused substitute in the clash vs Brentford.

Now for Hugill, the immediate test switches to the start of the Premier League 2 (U23s) campaign as they face tough opposition in Leicester, Chelsea and Man City.

However, this will once again improve Hugill’s physique in the game and this experience will take them a long way.

The long term deals do hint at Solskjaer appreciating both Hugill and McNeill and seeing them as valuable additions to the club’s long term future.

It does remain unlikely that we will see them in the first team for a little while as the new campaign gets going and now the whole squad has returned from the international breaks.

Future star: Man United plan new contract for brilliant in-demand midfielder

Manchester United youngster James Garner is set to go out on loan following his contract extension.

As per Football Insider, talks are underway over a new long-term contract for Garner.

The 20 year old has always been considered an exceptional talent by everyone in and around the club.

“I believe he’s got the chance to have a great future. He knows we believe in him. We’ve got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick.”

These were Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s words after giving James Garner his first-team debut back in 2019.

To aid his further development, Garner was sent to Watford on loan in September 2020. After a promising start, he soon fell down the pecking order under new manager Xisco Munoz.

The club decided to terminate the loan. The Englishman joined Nottingham Forest in January 2021 and has never looked back since.

Garner was a mainstay in Chris Hughton’s side, starting 18 of the 19 games he was involved in.

He played the full 90 minutes in all but one of those matches. The 20 year old showed maturity beyond his years to anchor the Forest midfield.

James Garner is a versatile midfielder. He can operate as a traditional number 6 or drift further forward as a number 8.

At Watford, Garner was deployed as an advanced midfielder, playing on the right of a three-man midfield in Vladimir Ivic’s transitional 3-5-2 system.

He hardly took part in the build-up and was often instructed to press high and get into the opposition box.

On the other hand, at Nottingham Forest, Garner played a much deeper role alongside the experienced Cafu.

Chris Hughton’s side was set up more defensively in a structured 4-4-2 formation. Garner was heavily involved in the build-up play and had a more disciplined role.

The Englishman seemed more comfortable in this position as it allowed him to control the game at his own pace.

Since Garner joined, Forest’s average points per game improved significantly from 0.96 to 1.37.

Playing at the heart of midfield in one of the toughest leagues globally, Garner has excelled at his game and gained valuable experience.

As reported here yesterday, despite Forest’s desire to bring him back for a second season, a loan move to a Premier League club seems ideal to get used to the physicality and speed of the English top flight.

Garner has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the country and another of United’s homegrown superstars.

More pre-season trouble: Man United star latest to miss important training camp

Manchester United star Dean Henderson will reportedly miss training as he continues to recover, dealing a blow to his chances for the club’s season opener.

The talented goalkeeper has not enjoyed a pleasant few months, having been forced to pull out of the England squad that made it to the Euros final vs Italy.

Henderson was said to have suffered from a hip injury for a while with United and only called it quits when he could no longer take the pain.

The academy graduate has been battling David de Gea to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s first choice between the sticks and even looked like he had one the position at one point.

A new season meant a fresh start but unfortunately it looks as though he will have to remain patient once more.

According to the club’s official website, a statement was released saying: “Dean Henderson will miss Manchester United’s Scotland training camp while he continues his recovery from prolonged fatigue after contracting a COVID-19 infection three weeks ago.

“He is expected to be training again soon.”

The Peoples Person last covered news on Henderson when it was claimed the Red Devils will keep both him and De Gea this season to allow them to continue to battle it out for the number one spot.

It looks like the experienced Spaniard will have a headstart on his teammate as he has managed to return to training with no issues.

Tom Heaton has been the main goalkeeper for Manchester United this pre-season but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see De Gea between the sticks in the next game.

Lack of clarity sees Man United hesitate over key defensive reinforcement

Manchester United’s interest in Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier reportedly hasn’t advanced due to a lack of clarity in defence.

The experienced Englishman has been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s radar this season but a move hasn’t transpired just yet.

United’s current options at right-back are Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, and Brandon Williams, while the likes of Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe, and Phil Jones all have a history of playing in the position too.

It may seem well-stocked but Solskjaer wants the position to have a certain balance to it and there’s currently too much uncertainty.

The Red Devils have invested well in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane but they’re not quite done yet so perhaps Trippier may still come in.

Clarification over Dalot’s future makes sense but it seems strange to make a decision based on how he performs in pre-season.

Pre-seasons are hardly the time to assess a player’s ability as it is typically a time when fitness is the main focus.

It is likely the holdup is more to do with AC Milan’s own hesitancy in investing in Dalot once more.

Manchester United seem keen to ensure they receive money for the stars they loan this year in contrast to how they’ve let players go for free in the past.

Given the need to sort out the wage bill and to ensure they can continue investing this summer, it makes sense for Solskjaer’s side to remain stubborn on their demands.

Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams has gathered interest from a couple of Premier League clubs, with Southampton and Norwich City reportedly pursuing a loan move for the player.

According to The Mirror, Norwich are in pole position to secure a deal for the 20 year old.

Norwich City are in pole position to sign Brandon Williams on loan after holding talks with the player last week. Southampton still want Williams but a chat with Daniel Farke has moved the situation in Norwich's favour. Saints are unwilling to pay the loan fee #mulive [mirror]

Southampton remain an interested party, but Daniel Farke has reportedly convinced Williams to join the Canaries.

Norwich have bounced right back into the Premier League after a season in the Championship.

In their 2019-20 Premier League campaign, Farke’s side had a woeful defensive record, conceding 75 goals.

Reinforcements at the back would therefore be necessary if they aim to stay up this time around.

After a frustrating season at United, Williams would hugely benefit from a loan move within the Premier League.

The arrival of Alex Telles has limited his game time in his preferred left-back position, with Luke Shaw almost a guaranteed name in the starting eleven.

Williams is a dynamic player with an aura of optimism. He can play on either flank comfortably and has excellent work-rate bombing up and down the pitch.

He has already racked up 50 first-team appearances at such a young age for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and is regarded as a future prospect by people around the club.

Huge transfer boost for United as Spanish giants line up departing star’s replacement - report

Atletico Madrid are preparing for the loss of potential Manchester United target Kieran Trippier.

A backup right-back is something that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been looking at throughout this summer’s transfer window and he could be about to get his man.

Trippier, who enjoyed a winning 2020-21 season in La Liga has been on the radar for quite some time now as Solskjaer looks to add more backup options to the full-back positions.

However, the £43 million asking price for someone who is in the last year of his contract and is 30 years old is seen as impossible to Man United and would prefer it to be significantly cut down.

According to the Spanish outlet as.com, Atletico are still looking for a right-back despite already having three players in that position.

The two other players in the position are Sime Vrsaljko, a player who isn’t trusted to be a regular starter due to previous injuries and Santiago Arias, who has just returned from a serious injury and isn’t worth the risk at the moment.

Trippier is a significant part of the squad and if he were to leave at the end of the transfer window, the planning has to start now for the club to try and secure a new right-back.

According to AS, journalist Nicolo Schira has reported that Atletico have identified Alessandro Florenzi, who plays in Seria A for Roma, as Trippier’s replacement if he is to leave the club.

This comes after his international team securing a European Championship win and Florenzi having a blistering summer campaign himself.

Florenzi is also looking to secure his future after being touted around to other clubs over the past couple of seasons.

With Atletico planning life after Trippier, this to United fans could mean that he is on his way to Old Trafford.

Explosive article reveals even bigger problems for Pogba and United in transfer saga

The general view that Paul Pogba is a better, happier and more popular player for his national team than he is for Manchester United has been challenged in an interesting and revealing new article.

The Athletic this morning claims that in some senses Pogba is a mystery figure in France and that he has suffered much of the same criticism when playing for les Bleus as he has for the Red Devils.

The outlet says that ‘several people inside the French football industry [] wonder whether signing Pogba would mean more for PSG from a marketing perspective than necessarily being the deal to turn Mauricio Pochettino’s side into Champions League winners,’ and that ‘PSG’s concern is that they could be used by [Pogba’s agent, Mino] Raiola to get a bigger contract out of United for his client.’

Despite the fact that the 28-year-old was widely considered to be one of the best players of Euro 2020, he was not immune from criticism in his home country.

‘Many people in France are still sore, to say the least, about France’s exit from Euro 2020 and the stories that have subsequently emerged about dressing-room divisions and politics,’ The Athletic says.

Those divisions reportedly included a high profile argument between Pogba’s family and Adrien Rabiot’s mother, Veronique.

‘Pogba was acclaimed as “le footballeur total” in L’Equipe after France beat Germany in their opening group assignment,’ the report continues.

‘Four days later, France drew 1-1 with Hungary and the write-ups were not so kind. “Where did the hero from Munich go?” the same newspaper asked. “Simple passes into touch, ragged control, considerable waste (20 misplaced passes). The midfielder, disorientated technically, injected no speed into the game.” Verdict: three out of ten.

Pogba was then praised for his performance against Portugal, with one reporter describing him as “the brains, the eyes, the heart, the legs, the spark and the barrel of gunpowder, all at once, in this France team”.

But despite a great goal in France’s loss to Switzerland in the Round of 16, the Atheltic says ‘It hasn’t gone unnoticed that Pogba lost the ball before Switzerland scored their last-minute equaliser. When France were struggling badly in the opening half, it was startling to see Pogba’s lack of influence.’

One accusation levelled at the Frenchman by United fans is that he is a fair weather player – great in a winning side, but not so good when things are not going well. The same accusation, it seems, has been made at the national level.

‘When everything is wonderful, he plays wonderfully. He thinks he’s a leader, he’s absolutely convinced of it. But when the team is not so good, Pogba is not so good either,’ a leading French commentator is quoted as saying.

‘He disappears. We saw it against Switzerland — it’s largely because of him that France ended up losing that game.”’

There is also another side to the story of the much-hailed motivational speeches that Pogba has been seen to give to his teammates, such as in the World Cup final against Argentina in 2018.

A ‘close-up observer’ of the French camp is quoted in the article as saying ‘“We saw the best bits of that speech from the World Cup [but] some of his other speeches weren’t quite as inspirational.

‘”One story is that Hugo Lloris had to interrupt him and tell him to ‘stop speaking’ because what he was saying was so ridiculous. Sometimes it is just nonsense.”’

There is a definite sense that Pogba is elusively charismatic, inconsistently effective and intermittently inspiring or disruptive for both club and country.

The main conclusion of The Athletic’s analysis is that ‘cometh the hour, cometh the man’ is sometimes the opposite of the Pogba effect.

‘Pogba’s season for United had ended with the player asking to be substituted, apparently because he was troubled by cramp, four minutes from the end of extra time in the Europa League final,’ the article notes.

‘Pogba’s departure made him a notable absentee from the penalty shoot-out that ended with Villarreal winning the trophy.

Manchester United fans have started to get more and more excited over the possibility of signing Wolves star Ruben Neves.

Rumours have grown in regards to the Portuguese magician being one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s targets for the midfield position.

Reports claim United will have to make more sales before purchasing anyone else, after securing back to back signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Should Solskjaer offload some deadwood and Paul Pogba‘s future is cleared up, it’s understood a defensive midfielder is on the wishlist.

Neves is believed to be a bargain signing and one who understands the Premier League, so naturally links have grown and so has fans’ interest.

The Peoples Person previously wrote a feature on how Neves would help transform Manchester United’s midfield.

The 24-year-old does seem a natural fit and would add key missing elements to the club’s engine room.

However, perhaps he isn’t really a traditional defensive midfielder or a destroyer and that is also something missing a little at United.

It certainly all depends on what type of player Solskjaer wants and what money is left in the budget to complete a transfer, though getting rid of the deadwood should definitely help.

Time to deliver: Underperforming United star handed golden opportunity to rescue career

There’s little doubt that Marcus Rashford‘s post-surgery absence will come as a blow to Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Despite playing with injury for over half of last season, the wide man still managed to contribute 36 goals and assists in 57 games for his club.

And, while allowing Rashford to delay surgery to play a bit-part role for England at Euro 2020 might remain contentious, the situation isn’t necessarily as bleak for United as it might first seem.

The reality is that the Red Devils have lost a player from the one position in which they have an abundance of high-grade options.

For starters, there’s new signing Jadon Sancho, who has played more games from the left in his career to date than he has any other position.

And it’s an area from which the former Dortmund ace has historically thrived, with a whopping 73 goal involvements from just 81 games.

Starting from the left gives Sancho license to unleash his full range of talents. With the superb Luke Shaw overlapping and Edinson Cavani making blindside runs in the box, he’d have a wealth of options to choose from.

And decision-making just happens to be one of the winger’s most notable talents.

The ever-improving Mason Greenwood would also benefit from this setup, keeping his spot on the right side of the attacking three. Two inverted wingers either side of a top target man would give the Red Devils a dazzling combination of pace, trickery and finishing prowess.

It’s a tantalising prospect.

However, Sancho was signed primarily to solve the side’s long-standing absence of a genuine right-sided attacker.

Therefore, if he starts the season from the right, that would leave the French connection of Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba as the two other alternatives.

Although Martial often frustrates, on his day he can be unplayable and ‘his day’ has generally come from picking the ball up on the left and looking to drive infield at speed.

He might have stagnated in some areas but there are few more thrilling sights than an in-form Martial unsettling defenders with his pace, trickery and ice-cool finishing.

Of all the players who could benefit from Rashford’s injury, Martial appears to be the one who needs to grab the chance to re-establish himself. There might not be many more.

And, while much has been said about Pogba’s defensive limitations, when deployed on the left, he’s had the freedom to express himself with less emphasis on tracking back.

It’s no coincidence that this left-sided liberation has resulted in some of his best United displays, with his complete domination of Spurs still fresh in the memory from April.

Although less likely, it could also be argued that Anthony Elanga has done enough to push himself into first team contention. His pacy, direct play and eye for goal could even see him edging the mercurial Martial out of the frame.

Ultimately, Rashford’s absence might not be ideal, but it’s far from a disaster.

In fact, if United quickly find the solution to his absence, he might even find himself needing to quickly regain top form just to fight his way back into the team.

Which is the kind of luxury problem that highlights just how much the Red Devils’ squad has progressed over the last three years.

Man United fans excited as we’ve got our new Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand has had his say on what bringing in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid will mean for the club.

The sensational defender is only a medical away from completing a shock transfer, having spent a decade in Spain.

United have been linked with a move for Varane in the past but unfortunately nothing came of it.

The World Cup winner will likely line up alongside Harry Maguire in the centre of defence with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer completely rejuvenating the club’s backline.

Out of the expected back four, only Luke Shaw was at the club before the legendary Norwegian and even he was transformed by his manager’s arrival.

According to the club’s official website, Crerand said: “He’s a class act. He played in the 2018 World Cup for France and stood out. He’s a totally class act.

“I don’t think there are many top central defenders anywhere. He reminds of Rio Ferdinand actually – that’s how good he is.

“He’s excellent with the ball at his feet and he makes everything look easy, exactly the same as Rio. That’s because they’re terrific players. They make things look easy. They can read the game well.

“I think he’ll be a great signing for United and at a great age as well; he’s been there and done it.”

Comparisons with Rio Ferdinand were always going to happen, particularly since he was Varane’s idol.

If the 28-year-old defender enjoys even half the success the Englishman did in his time at Old Trafford then fans will be pleased with the transfer.

Many supporters have argued Varane’s profile is far more suited and complementary to Maguire than Victor Lindelof.

The Swedish centre-back is expected to be the man to make way in the starting XI and it’s safe to say he’s been heavily criticised in the past.

Nonetheless, fans will be hoping Varane can adjust to his new surroundings quickly and help elevate the club to the next level.

‘Hunger and fire’: United misfit’s burning desire to prove doubters wrong

Donny van de Beek could be a force to be reckoned with at Old Trafford this season.

The Dutchman’s first campaign at the club was hugely disappointing and his hopes of ending the season on a high with his national side in Euro 2020 were dashed when he sustained a groin injury that ruled him out of the competition.

Rumours even started to circulate that Van de Beek had had enough and was looking to move on from United, but according to The Athletic, nothing could be further from the truth.

‘Van de Beek has no plans whatsoever to leave the club this summer and the club have not suggested they would like him to exit,’ reporter Adam Crafton said.

‘All parties are hopeful the second season will be far more successful.’

Crafton reports that the 24-year-old has gone to extraordinary lengths this summer to improve his chances of establishing himself as a regular member of United’s first team.

‘Van de Beek made clear he wanted improve his physique ahead of his second season in English football. He returned to his home village in Nijkerkerveen, a 45-minute drive from Amsterdam, and developed a plan to gain lean muscle.

‘Van de Beek enlisted the help of FysioConcept, an elite specialised training centre in Amsterdam, where he followed a personalised nutrition plan and weight-based training sessions.’

Apparently, the sessions have paid off.

‘You do not need to be a fitness expert to see that Van de Beek has amassed a larger frame,’ Crafton says.

‘After his first pre-season appearance against Brentford this week, in which he wore the captain’s armband, his team-mate Harry Maguire teased Van de Beek by writing on Instagram, “Don’t stretch that armband”, which appeared to be a reference to the Dutchman’s visible muscle gain.’

‘Manchester United players are speaking privately of a player who appears more robust and confident on the training field.

‘One source close to Van de Beek told The Athletic this week that “a hunger and fire” is burning within the player to make the grade at United.’

The new levels of fitness and determination will be good news for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, particularly as Crafton notes, since the intention this season is to switch to a more attacking 4-3-3 formation rather than using the double pivot of Scott McTominay and Fred.

This means, in principle at least, there is one more midfield position up for grabs for which the Dutchman is qualified. He can play alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, rather than instead of one or the other of them.

Crafton notes that equally important is that ‘United’s coaching staff must also give him greater opportunities to develop a run of form.’

If all goes to plan, Donny van de Beek could be like a new signing at Manchester United this season, and a world class one at that.

Not Pereira or Pogba: In demand United midfielder wanted by multiple clubs

Sheffield United are keen to take Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan for the 2021/22 season, according to reports.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan in the Championship, starting at Watford before a change in manager left him surplus to requirements.

He then moved to Nottingham Forest where he quickly became a first team regular and fan favourite, playing 20 games and scoring four goals.

According to The Sun, Forest ‘would like him back, but the Blades have joined the race and are very keen on landing a loan deal.

‘Garner, 20, would play a big part in boss Slavisa Jokanovic’s plans and could cover the Bramall Lane club in case of late bids for stars like Sander Berge.’

Whether United will be keen on another Championship move for Garner remains to be seen.

Having proven himself at that level last term, some would argue that he needs now to be challenged at a higher level, either at a Premiership club or in one of Europe’s other top leagues.

As he progressed through the academy, Garner played various central midfield roles, even helping out at centre-back on occasions.

However, since joining Forest he has established himself very much as a specialist holding midfielder, a position in which United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been reportedly keen to strengthen.

But United’s curtailed pre-season has not afforded the Birkenhead-born man with many opportunities to stake his claim and it seems unlikely, although not impossible at this stage, that he will be a part of Solskjaer’s plans for the new season.

If it is to be another stint in the Championship, a return to Forest might arguably be a more assured route of regular football than going to the unpredictability of newly-relegated Sheffield United.

As Nottinghamforest.news says, ‘there will be other clubs interested, but United would surely love Garner to play over 40 games on loan and he’d do that at Forest.

‘Supporters would love the chance to see the youngster in action at the City Ground.’

Why United should not sign this world class player despite bargain price

The transfer rumour mill is tilting its sails at Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez this weekend and the links between the player and Manchester United are now coming thick and fast.

After a mediocre season by his own high standards at Atleti, Saul is rumoured to be keen to face a new challenge and the Rojiblancos are more disposed to sell the player than ever before.

According to The Mirror, ‘Representatives of the 26-year-old have been given the blessing of Atletico Madrid bigwigs to negotiate a move for their man.

‘And they are due to jet into England tomorrow in a bid to strike a deal to bring him to the Premier League.

‘Man United are in the box seat but Liverpool are also keen and proposals will be sought from both clubs in a bid to tie up a deal quickly.’

The stories circulating in the media are that a figure of around £35-£40 million might be enough to capture the signature of a player with a £125 million buyout clause and a contract that runs to 2026.

Since the onset of Covid-19, however, his market value according to Transfermarkt has dropped from £77 million to £34 million.

Niguez is pretty much a multi-purpose midfielder who can play central, left or defensive midfield and as such is being touted as a possible addition to United’s ranks both as a potential reinforcement in the holding midfield role and as a replacement for Paul Pogba, should he leave.

However, despite the press reporting that United are in pole position to sign Saul, it seems unlikely at this stage unless either Pogba or Donny van de Beek were to leave the club.

Even then, arguably Saul is more of a ‘Fred’ or McTominay-type player than a Pogba. An upgrade, arguably, but more their ‘all-rounder’ style than a creative.

United have bagged two bargains this summer in Jadon Sancho and (subject to confirmation) Raphael Varane. But as could be seen in the case of Van de Beek last summer, there is perhaps little point in signing a player just because he is a bargain, which could be the case when it comes to the Spaniard.

The club need a specialist holding midfielder, and Saul is not it. They may need a Pogba replacement, and Saul is not that, either.

Another issue is how much good it would do Atleti to sell Saul at this stage, even if they are desperate for funds.

As reported here last year when the last lot of Saul-to-United rumours were doing the rounds, the player has a complicated ownership structure: his contract is partly owned by a consortium led by agent Jorge Mendes and former United chairman Peter Kenyon.

The consortium’s 40% ownership of the Spaniard’s contract means that if Atleti were to sell him at this stage for around £35-£40m, they would only recoup 60% of that amount, a drop in the ocean compared to the player’s true value.

It would make considerably more sense for the club to ride out the Covid storm for one more season at least – Saul would still be only 27 and still highly marketable. It would not be inconceivable for his value to double in that time.

The recently mooted swap deal between Saul and Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann, had it worked out, would have been a different kettle of fish, because value would have been balanced on both sides of the deal. But the fact that the Rojiblancos were interested in that deal does not mean that they would also be interested in a cash sale.

Of course, these are complicated times and the transfer market is harder than ever to predict. But given the above, it seems unlikely at this point that Saul Niguez will join the Red Devils this summer.

Andreas Pereira has sat down for an exclusive interview with TNT Sports where he spoke about his future in Manchester.

Having just reported on Fenerbahçe’s interest in Andreas, TNT Sports have followed up with speaking to the Brazilian midfielder himself about the potential move.

With a reported starting asking price of €25 million, Fenerbahçe are looking to negotiate a much lower fee in line with the post COVID market.

When asked about the interest, Andreas said “I leave the negotiations to my manager. If the interest is true, it would be great to talk to interested teams and see the project for my career, the importance I will have in the cast and future projection.

‘About Fenerbahçe, it’s a country with people passionate about football. And Alex is one of my idols in the position, it would be nice to wear his shirt. Why not?”

This is not the first time Andreas has spoken candidly about a potential move, as he has opened up earlier in the summer about being open to moves back to Lazio, to clubs in his birth country of Belgium, and his dream to one day play for Santos in Brazil.

Most notably in his interview, Andreas continues to stress the importance of playing time.

Having just finished a loan spell at Lazio where he was used in a bit part role, mainly featuring off the bench, the Brazilian international is desperate to find regular minutes every week.

Speaking on what is best for his career, the academy graduate said “in Manchester or elsewhere, the time has come to play, to have at least an hour per game on the field, to have the confidence to play. I want to be happy, to feel important.”

Further adding “I’m ready to play, I’m not a boy anymore. I’m a man ready to take responsibility.”

Currently featuring for United in pre-season, during which he has bagged a wonder goal against Brentford, the prospect of adding to his 75 appearances for the Manchester club have been severely limited ever since the signing of Bruno Fernandes.

As a result, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unlikely to be able to afford Andreas his desired role, a summer move looks certain.

With multiple clubs around the world interested in his services, the ultimate destination for Andreas though “all depends on what they want for my career.”
