Manchester United academy graduate Hannibal Mejbri has admitted that a return to Birmingham City on loan next season is still on the cards.
Mejbri said goodbye to Birmingham City fans on Monday as his loan spell came to an end.
The Tunisian has enjoyed a fruitful time at St. Andrew’s. He made a total of 38 Championship appearances and accumulated 1,952 minutes to his name.
Mejbri managed one goal and five assists.
The United loanee instantly became a fan-favourite at Birmingham, where he earned appreciation from supporters for his combative no-nonsense displays in the middle of the park.
BirminghamLive questioned the 20-year-old about his plans and the experience of playing in England’s second division.
Mejbri said, “First, the Championship is very hard, so I’m going to have a good holiday. After that I will think about next season and get ready for my pre-season with Man United.”
On whether a return to Birmingham appeals to him, he said, “We will see at the end of the pre-season. Why not? You never know.”
Mejbri jokingly summarized his time in the Championship under John Eustace’s stewardship in one word – “easy.”
He went on ahead to remark, “It was really hard. The Championship is really hard. We play week in, week out. At home you have to sleep every day and eat good otherwise you get injured.”
“It was a really good experience. I think I learned a lot and the fans were unbelievable with me. I have to give them everything on the pitch and that is what I tried to do.”
The United man reflected on his only goal for his temporary employers – an incredible free-kick effort that West Brom’s David Button had no chance of saving.
Mejbri pointed out that he felt obligated to step up in a game of such magnitude. He dismissed any suggestions that he did not mean to score the goal and it was down to pure luck.
The final decision as to where Mejbri will be plying his trade next season will rest in Erik ten Hag’s hands.
