Manchester United u18s hosted the mini-derby at Carrington on Saturday morning as cross-town rivals Manchester City came to exact revenge for United’s win earlier in the season.
An early wayward pass from Elyh Harrison handed City with the first chance of the game but he made up for it with a big save to deny a shot destined for the bottom left corner from City’s Justin Oboavwoduo.
Going the other way, a long ball wasn’t dealt with by the City defender and the bell fell to Ethan Wheatley who played it wide to Ethan Williams cutting in from the left but the winger’s strike was too central allowing the keeper to parry down and smother.
Still in the opening five minutes, Williams threaded through Wheatley who had the ball taken off his foot by the lunging City keeper but it fell to Finley McAllister who looked to slide it into the open net only to be denied by the recovering defender.
An end-to-end affair in the opening stages, City took the lead in the 12th minute. A tempting cross from the right brought Harrison out flapping at the ball, leaving the net exposed for the City captain Nico O’Reilly to finish at back post.
Nearing the half hour mark, Shea Lacey was dispossessed deep in United’s half allowing City to cross and Sam Murray could only half clear leading to a shot fired towards goal that was blocked out for a corner.
Just moments later though, a risk pass by Jayce Fitzgerald lost possession in midfield and an audacious attempt form O’Reilly from 40 yards caught Harrison off his line to double City’s lead.

Shortly after, a gap at the back opened for Joel Ndala to race down the left and strike from a wide angle that was palmed out by Harrison.
Late in the half, Lacey intercepted the keeper’s pass and looked to replicate O’Reilly but caught it wrong and the ball bounced well wide in the end.
The first-half ended 0-2 after an even first 15 minutes. Thereafter, City took control and were on top for the rest of the half.
City continued the second half in similar fashion with Ndala turning James Nolan in the box and centering for Jaden Heskey looking to flick in from close but Harrison blocked to keep it out.
Ndala had a fine match causing trouble down the left again, as he ran past Nolan and cut back for O’Reilly looking for his third only to be denied by Habeeb Ogunneye taking the ball to the face to keep United in it.
Jack Moorhouse was dispossessed in midfield which allowed City to counter, ending with Ndala curling towards the top right corner but kept out by fantastic save from Harrison.
Harrison was called into question again by Ndala with a point blank range shot from eight yards but the young keeper was quick to save again just a month on from signing his first professional deal with the club.
In the 80th minute, Williams’ corner was whipped in for Louis Jackson at the back post to head in and bring United back into the match for a late charge.

Despite a strong final ten minutes from United chasing the equaliser, it was City that scored against just being added time. A free kick from 25 yards out, Seb Naylor put it to the keeper’s side of the wall and into the right corner to make it 3 for City.
