United's surprise move for this PL-proven striker ends after "live audition" failure - report

Manchester United’s hunt for a striker ahead of next season is well-known considering the current options at manager Erik ten Hag’s disposal.

Wout Weghorst, for all his desire and work-rate, is not good enough to start on a regular-basis for the club while Anthony Martial remains perennially injured.

Most reports seem to indicate it is a straight horse race between Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen of Napoli. Both are expected to cost record sums.

United’s surprise move for Mitrovic has ended

Spurs want a payment of £100million up front for their record goalscorer while the Serie A leaders are holding out for €150 million for their Nigerian sniper.

The Daily Star have now added a rather surprising name to the list — Aleksandar Mitrovic of Fulham.

The report mentions that the Red Devils were interested in pursuing a summer move but have changed their minds following his FA Cup antics.

“Aleksandar Mitrovic may have cost himself a move to Manchester United – with his red-card rage at Old Trafford.

“The Fulham striker, who has scored 12 times in all competitions this season, had been earmarked by United as a potential target in the summer window.

“But that was before his dismissal in the Londoners’ controversial 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final reverse to the Reds seven days ago – and subsequent FA charge for violent conduct,” the report added.

Ten Hag was said to be impressed with what he has seen from the Serbian and his “live audition” was going well as he put the Cottagers in front. But then he lost his head and violently shoved referee Chris Kavanagh.

That meant he saw a straight red and that dismissal ended up costing the London side as they went down to nine men, allowing United to come from behind and prevail 3-1.

Mitrovic has a poor disciplinary record

The article mentioned that the Serbian international’s displays had put him on the radar of top clubs such as Chelsea, Tottenham, and Barcelona.

But his incoming ban, which could be a season-ender, might dent his hopes of earning a mega move as clubs will now be wary of bringing in such a hot-headed player.

There have been calls to make an example out of Mitrovic and a big ban of six months has also been mooted. But the likelihood of a 10-game ban is the most plausible one at the moment.

Mitrovic’s goal record is certainly decent but his poor injury and disciplinary record should give United pause before they think of pursuing a move.
