Wout Weghorst is confident of completing a loan move to Manchester United following interest in the striker.
Negotiations to terminate his loan move to Besiktas are underway and it is now becoming abundantly clear that the striker could be leaving the Turkish club this month.
The 30-year-old temporarily departed Burnley after they were relegated from the Premier League last season.
Manchester Evening News reports that Weghorst is confident that the move to Manchester for the rest of the season will be completed soon.
Burnley do not have a recall clause inserted into the loan agreement but this didn’t stop United from attempting to sign the Dutchman on a temporary basis.
On Thursday, the forward seemed to bid farewell to Besiktas fans after scoring the winning goal.
Erik ten Hag has been vocal in press conferences in recent weeks claiming that the club needs to sign a striker after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sources in the Netherlands believe an agreement is close despite people closer to United saying otherwise.
The outlet reports that Ten Hag has earmarked Weghorst as a short term option for the rest of the season.
Weghorst, who is now confident of traveling back to England to play for United, will want to hit the ground running and silence critics who doubted his credentials last season.
Anthony Martial, who is the only first team striker currently available, hasn’t completed a full match this season. Marcus Rashford has also started up top but he prefers playing on the left wing.
The squad are in desperate need of more attacking options to replace the Frenchman considering his woeful injury record and his patchy form.
Considering the congested fixture schedule over the next couple of weeks, it’ll be crucial to find a backup striker or even someone who can perform better than the current options.
This season, Weghorst has scored eight goals in 16 appearances in all competitions for Besiktas.
Ten Hag has continued to push for attacking reinforcements going into the second-half of the season and to ease the workload on Martial.
The Dutch international scored two goals in the quarter finals of the World Cup against eventual champions Argentina but this amounted to nothing as they were defeated via penalty shoot-out.
