The Athletic explains why Jadon Sancho is flopping at Man United

Jadon Sancho has not had the most promising start to his Manchester United career.

After arriving from Borussia Dortmund for €85 million, many expected the 21 year old to hit the ground running.

Sancho has failed to score or assist in eight games for the Red Devils, which had never happened at the Bundesliga club.

This, however, most likely boils down to some factors explained well by The Athletic’s Carl Anka in his recent article.

He states: “Sancho’s place in Gareth Southgate’s set-up is its own separate story, but a disappointing Euro 2020 has had a knock-on effect to his start with United.”

“Sancho only earned 97 minutes of playing time during Euro 2020 (across three appearances) and, like many players who featured in the tournament, he was afforded an extended break following its conclusion.”

“A small bout of illness following the tournament meant that while he completed his transfer to United on July 23, Sancho did not have his first full training session with the club until August 9, after United had completed their training camp in Scotland and their final preseason game against Everton.”

The Euros debacle followed by the lack of preseason training indeed has hindered Sancho’s game thus far.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping that he finds his feet quickly to establish himself in this team as one of the prime creators.

Anka also goes on to defend the 21 year old’s performances.

“Solskjaer’s use of Sancho on the left is also perhaps an attempt to help his winger acclimatise to the Premier League as he builds match fitness.”

“Compare Sancho’s touch map from his 30-minute substitute appearance on the right against Southampton… … to his 72-minute performance against Wolverhampton Wanders, where he featured on the left.”

“The 1-0 victory over Wolves did bring the curious sight of Sancho on the left while Dan James played on the right, but this appeared to be a tactical move from Solskjaer to use the Welshman to try and nullify the potential threat of Adama Traore.”

The 21 year old is used to a possession-based system, thriving on interchangeability and movement of players around him.

It will take him time to adapt to Solskjaer’s counter-attacking style of play.

Another startling stat shows how Sancho grows into the season. The Englishman did not net his first goal for Dortmund until the 14th game week last season.

United have a fantastic talent on their hands, with an abundance of European experience at a very young age.

Solskjaer must be patient and help Sancho integrate with the side to get the best out of him.

Team members reveal their true feelings about Solskjaer's ability to manage United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s credentials for managing Manchester United are constantly under scrutiny and fans are divided as to whether they think he is out of his depth – the so-called #OleOut camp, or whether he should be given more time and backing – the #OleIn camp.

At The Peoples Person we pride ourselves on presenting the news in an unbiased manner, but today some of our writers shared their personal opinions on whether they are ‘#OleOut, #OleIn or somewhere in between.’

Scott Eckersley said: ‘I’m somewhere in between. His squad building has been good and the atmosphere between the team and fans is the best it’s been for a few years but I’m increasingly pessimistic that he’s got that extra few percent that separates the decent managers from the great ones.

‘Tactically I think he’s underwhelming and it feels like he’s at the limit of what he’s capable of. We regularly get outplayed by weaker sides and can’t control a game.

‘If there was a standout manager available who plays attacking football, I’d want them but there doesn’t seem to be an outstanding candidate.

‘Ultimately though, I think he’ll be remembered as a necessary palette cleanser after the misery of Moyes to Mourinho.’

Red Billy was more critical:

‘After changing my mind many times, I am now 95% #OleOut. I don’t think there is enough tactical awareness and he doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes. The other day he said at a presser he wants midfielders like Bryan Robson rather than positional specialists, and I think that shows outdated thinking and explains why our midfield is ineffective whoever he picks. Football has moved on.

‘He plays too many players out of position for no good reason, he doesn’t rotate his squad enough and he puts too much faith in graft and loyalty ahead of talent and class. He still hasn’t worked out how to play the low block and has no tactical plan B when Plan A, the counter-attack, doesn’t work.

‘It’s becoming a cliché to say United don’t have a team identity and are just a collection of individuals, but it doesn’t make it untrue.

‘On the plus side, he’s certainly to be given credit for assembling a good squad and building good team spirit, which are crucially important and difficult in the modern game.’

Marwan Harraz adopted a more balanced position:

‘I’m still on the fence about Solskjaer. He’s invested smartly and made changes to the club structure that were well overdue and ignored by previous ‘world-class’ managers.

‘Solskjaer’s also as good managing upwards with the board and owners as he is with his own players who clearly love him.

‘The missing piece sadly lies with the fundementals of tactics. As it’s currently understood, he doesn’t take part in training sessions as he’s a manager and not a coach (similar to Sir Alex Ferguson). That’s never a problem but the problem is he’s failed to be ruthless with his staff and solve a glaringly obvious issue.

‘We can’t be second-best on the pitch so consistently and not address it. He needs to resolve this issue however he likes but I feel it’s by bringing in a tactical coach who can give the team the solid shape it needs.

‘Ultimately it’s this area that will be his downfall if it’s not addressed as he’s been brilliant in all other areas of footballing management.’

Shane Healy was also undecided:

‘Much like Scott and Marwan, I’m still on the fence a bit. We still need a proper midfield and the managerial candidates out there aren’t great.

‘Maybe give him this season and try to tempt Pochettino afterwards.

‘I’d love him to succeed obviously but we can’t string three passes together a lot of the time.

‘It feels like he has turned us into a team who play exactly like United in the 1999 final. Poor for most of the game and then pull off a miracle at the end.

‘Agreed that the squad and morale building has been good.’

Raj Dholakia was not convinced:

‘I’m Ole out. Firstly it is quite clear that we don’t have a definite style of play. After almost three years in charge, the man has no clue what our strongest eleven is.

‘Secondly, he is tactically inept and it is clearly shown in big matches i.e semi finals and finals of tournaments. There is a lack of bravery to make substitutions (Europa final).

‘Zero trophies in three years.’

‘His preference of ‘passion and work rate’ over natural quality means we struggle to keep hold of possession.

‘Ole time and time again relies on individual brilliance to bail us out of tricky situations. The issue is that this is not sustainable.

‘Also, we have brought in players like Sancho and VDB when they clearly do not suit his counter-attacking style of football.

‘Why did we even buy Sancho? Was he even a priority over a defensive mid this summer? He is an amazing player but he’s not Rashford who can run in behind for fast counter attacks. Sancho is a cultured player who thrives in a possession based system. Sometimes i feel Ole himself doesnt even know the type of player he is buying.

‘Everyone wanted Jose sacked despite finishing 2nd and winning 2 trophies the year before. We have a good enough squad to be challenging this year, I’m just scared that we’ll waste another season due to the manager not being good enough.

Joe Taylor was arguably the writer most in favour of keeping the Norwegian:

‘I’m Ole in (for the rest of the season)…but if he doesn’t deliver a trophy this season that is quite a long time where the club would have been suffering from this trophy drought and it isn’t right.

‘We’ve seen some tactical masterclass performances from Solskjaer.. for example vs. Villarreal his substitutions worked, Lingard, Matic and Cavani all contributed to the win last night and the timings of the substitutions was key.

‘It’s key that there are some great relationships forming under Solskjaer and the players are 100% happier than they were 3-4 seasons ago. His rebuild has also contributed to the atmosphere on-field and off-field and he has always stuck by his players whenever the media scrutinises them.

‘I think we have to praise the boss for the turnaround behind the scenes as well. The improvements in the academy have been thanks to Solskjaer. He has promoted a lot of players who have turned out to be great and his recruitment team and the football director had a fantastic summer as well.

‘On the other hand it is unfortunately clear that he has key favourites when picking his starting eleven.. for example, the McFred pivot just doesn’t work in every game and it does cost us some crucial points.

‘The coaching team is very inexperienced and I would’ve liked to see a senior figure with experience sitting with Solskjaer rather than someone who has been in the job a few years.

‘However, I will back Solskjaer because I love what he has done to the squad and if he does leave, he has left this squad in the best state that it has been since 2013.’

Zoe Hodges also hasn’t given up on the Baby-faced Assassin:

‘I’m Ole in, but slowly moving to somewhere in the middle!

‘I’m a sentimental person, I like someone in charge who knows and genuinely loves the club. However, this is a make or break season for Ole, we have literally some of the greatest players who ever played the game, if he doesn’t get them to help and win silverware I think he’s out!’

Colm Murphy:

‘I’m somewhere in between. I think it is very obvious Ole is no Pep or Klopp and never will be, but at the same time he has brought a much needed settled period after years of turmoil.

‘With most things people try to make everything black and white whereas reality is always grey. He is heavily criticized for subs but he has used them brilliantly lately with Lingard and notably Matic offering great control and penetration in the middle at the end of matches.

‘Unless we have a really strong long term replacement then I don’t see the point of sacking him. He has done pretty well building the squad and there is a good atmosphere. The only issue is how he has completely neglected the midfield which is consistently our downfall.

‘And I’m not for blaming everything on the coaches because there isn’t a coach out there who would have our midfield looking good, it is a dismal selection of players. I also don’t want him sacked as I don’t want us to lose coaches like McKenna and Ramsey who I’ve heard nothing but good things about.

‘I’ve spoken with people at Vancouver Whitecaps about McKenna’s time there and they rave about him still to this day. The best way forward is to meticulously plan for his replacement to be lined up a year in advance, and not to be drawn into a sacking due to results and taking whoever is available.’

Finally, Sam Peoples is also #OleIn and explains his reasons in this United Peoples TV video:

Leading journalist says slow-learning Solskjaer's 'hopeless' flaw will catch up with him

Manchester United registered their first win of the current Champions League campaign with a faltering display against Villareal last night.

And United left it late, with Cristiano Ronaldo snatching an injury-time winner that will relieve some of the pressure from coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, despite battling to win the three points, United were second best for much of the contest and had to rely on wasteful opposition finishing and an inspired David De Gea to avoid a convincing defeat.

The Telegraph’s James Ducker has today seriously questioned whether Solskjaer has learned anything from the EL Final defeat to Unai Emery’s men back in May.

Ducker writes, “…not even a dramatic victory could mask the shortcomings in Solskjaer’s tactics…No teams with designs on the biggest trophies can rely solely on moments of individual brilliance.”

Of the Norwegian’s midfield structure, Ducker writes, “You had to wonder if Solskjaer had learned anything from the Europa League Final defeat…

“The Norwegian deployed the same midfield that had fluffed their lines in Gdansk and it was hopelessly bypassed on Wednesday night.”

Arguably United’s worst individual performance came from right-back Diogo Dalot, who had a torrid time standing in for the suspended Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, Ducker believes that the full-back’s struggles were a result of the midfield’s failure to wrestle the initiative away from their Spanish opponents.

“The success Villareal had in isolating Dalot … was a direct consequence of United’s failure to get to grips with (Dani) Parejo … Etienne Capoue and Manu Trugueros in midfield.

“What were Fernandes and Pogba’s roles supposed to be? And why did Solskjaer wait until the 75th minute to change anything?”

It’s both damning and in stark relief to the scenes of jubilation that met Ronaldo as he fired home the last gasp winner in front of the Stretford End.

Concern among the Reds’ fan base that individual brilliance is covering a multitude of sins will persist for as long as Solskjaer’s sides deliver such stodgy, unconvincing performances.

It’s likely that, sooner rather than later, the flaws within the current system will be ruthlessly exposed by the higher calibre of competition to come.

It's coming: When United fans can expect star player to take the league by storm

An intriguing statistic has emerged that will surely reassure concerned Manchester United fans in regards to Jadon Sancho‘s questionable form.

The sensational Englishman arrived at Old Trafford with high expectations on his talented shoulders after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chased him for two long summers.

United have needed a high-flying right-winger for quite some time and entrusted that crucial role to Sancho as he impressed out in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.

However, having finally completed his long-awaited transfer, he’s since failed to register an assist or a goal so far in his short career under Solskjaer’s management.

Hopeful fans haven’t been overly concerned about Sancho’s mediocre form but they hold hope he can improve and the statistic below shows that improvement is potentially just around the corner.

Sancho struggled to get going last season as he desperately tried to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on a move to Old Trafford.

However, once he did get over the stressful summer, as shown above, he fired back brilliantly to help Dortmund enjoy a somewhat successful season.

A hungry Sancho performed well enough to leave United wanting to chase him for a second straight year and to part with the majority of their large transfer budget.

Solskjaer has alternated using the young winger on either flank in a bid to allow him to get comfortable with his new surroundings.

There was always going to be an adjustment period as Sancho is young, and has had to adapt to a new club and a new league.

Players who come from Germany tend to need a season before they’re firing in the Premier League, with Chelsea’s Kai Havertz a good example.

Man United scouts show keen interest in 18 year-old attacking right-back

Manchester United’s scouting department have been on the look-out for right-back options, and Aberdeen’s Calvin Ramsay has been added to the list of candidates.

According to The Sun, alongside Everton, the Red Devils have shown interest in the 18 year-old.

Ramsay has had a fast rise to prominence. Towards the end of last season’s Scottish Premiership, he was given a debut by then caretaker boss Paul Sheerin and has since become a regular in the Aberdeen first 11, making 18 appearances.

He also made his under-21 international debut for Scotland in a Euro qualifying game last month.

Man United’s shortage of quality back-up at right-back was highlighted last night in their last-mintue victory against Villareal at Old Trafford in the Champion’s League.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka out due to suspension, Diogo Dalot was selected to cover. The Portuguese 22 year-old struggled to make an impact and looked weak, particularly defensively.

United were interested in Kieran Trippier last summer for the position but were put off by his price-tag of around £40 million.

Now it seems they have switched their focus to upcoming talents in that position.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will of course be keeping tabs on 20 year-old Ethan Laird as an option who is on loan at Swansea City this season and has registered two assists so far this season.

Brandon Williams will also be in the minds of United’s coaches. He is currently on loan with Norwich City but has been deployed at left-back.

Ramsay’s stats and performances for Aberdeen have been impressive. This season he has racked up six assists in 14 games.

As sides like Manchester City have shown, to go far in cup competitions, back-up squad players need to be of a high, consistent standard.

Although he recently signed a new contract with Aberdeen until 2024, with clubs like Man United now circling, the Scottish club may look to further improve the young talent’s terms.

‘Far from good enough’ - Man United fans reflect on dramatic win over Villareal

Some Manchester United fans have called for better performances following the narrow win over Villareal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side desperately needed all three points after they were stunned by Young Boys in the first group stage clash of the Champions League.

The legendary Norwegian’s position is currently under threat as well after a less than ideal start to the season.

When Villareal opened the scoring, naturally United fans were shocked by how poorly their team was performing.

Luckily Solskjaer’s men turned it around through a wondergoal from Alex Telles and a late winner from Cristiano Ronaldo but supporters could not get over the poor displays so far.

Manchester United have been getting away with results for much of the season, with arguably only the opening day clash against Leeds United being the only time they convincingly beat their opponents.

Even in that match Solskjaer’s side were involved in an open game and happened to take their chances more than their fierce rivals.

It’s clear something is wrong at United and a change needs to be made so that the team can begin dominating fixtures more and not need to be bailed out; though that change doesn’t necessarily have to be the former striker.

Solskjaer shows excellent man-management skills in call to international manager

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has protected Mason Greenwood from potentially ruining his future as Gareth Southgate came calling once again.

The sensational prospect has been in brilliant form so far this season and would have undoubtedly deserved to take his game to an international stage too.

Greenwood has been forced out wide again to the right-wing due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival as well as having to compete with Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani for the striker role.

Rather than sulking, he’s made the most of his minutes and put in multiple match-saving performances in order to remain in contention.

It’s obvious he’s getting a true footballing education from the likes of Ronaldo and Cavani and will benefit from the prolific pair.

According to the Daily Star, Southgate had hoped to recall Greenwood for the upcoming international break but opted not to after taking a phone call from Solskjaer.

It’s understood the legendary Norwegian convinced the England manager to delay the young forward’s inclusion in order to avoid any unnecessary pressure and allow him to continue regaining his confidence and form.

Southgate is said to want to keep strong ties with club managers and so caved to Solskjaer’s request, though he did warn the United manager that he will include Greenwood in the November fixtures if he’s still fit and in good form.

The report finishes off by insisting the academy graduate remains committed to representing England and isn’t considering switching allegiances to Jamaica.

Jesse Lingard, Jadon Sancho, and Luke Shaw have been called up though it will be interesting to see if any of them will feature as starters.

The left-back is recovering from a knock still whereas the former Borussia Dortmund man has never really been trusted by Southgate.

United star set for showdown talks with Solskjaer after latest snub - report

After showing his frustration at not being chosen as a substitute against Villareal yesterday, Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek is set to demand clarity from the club over his future.

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath notes that having been promised more game time this season by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Van de Beek ‘has played fewer minutes on the pitch than at this stage last season.’

McGrath writes that the Dutchman ‘will look for assurances of where he stands at Manchester United after his frustration at not playing boiled over.’

He adds that Van de Beek ‘was expecting more game time in his second campaign at Old Trafford, rather than one full game in the League Cup and being taken off at half-time against Young Boys.

‘When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned to Fred and Jesse Lingard to chase down a winner against Unai Emery’s team, Van de Beek was consoled by fellow substitutes Eric Bailly and Dean Henderson on the bench before throwing his chewing gum to the floor in anger.

‘It was another low for United’s £35 million signing from Ajax a year ago, who is inevitably frustrated at never earning the trust of Solskjaer in the big matches and is losing his place in the Holland squad as a result.’

Whilst arguably Solskjaer’s substitution choices were vindicated as both Fred and Lingard had a hand in the winning goal, Solskjaer’s handling of the 24-year-old continues to puzzle most onlookers, who see a world class midfielder being constantly sidelined.

To make matters worse, United’s midfield has been palpably the team’s weakest area all season and so the fact that he is still not selected adds insult to injury for the former Ajax man.

The Telegraph reporter also notes that ‘there was interest in Van de Beek in the summer but United chose to keep him at the club, where he was looking to play more than his four Premier League starts last season following a year of adapting to English football.’

He also showed his determination and commitment to the cause by undergoing an extensive fitness program over the summer to improve his physique.

‘His only appearance in the Premier League has been five minutes as a substitute after victory was all-but-secured against Newcastle United, with Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic all seemingly further up the pecking order heading into this weekend’s game against Everton,’ McGrath concludes.

How Solskjaer and the club will respond to Van de Beek’s demands for assurances, and whether it is perceived to be passionate or petulant, remains to be seen.

United star nominated for Premier League player of the month award

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronald has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s player of the month award for September.

The Portuguese legend has hit the ground running at Old Trafford following his sensational transfer deadline move back from Serie A giants Juventus.

United made the move for their former star at the last minute after it had emerged that neighbours and rivals Manchester City were trying to sign him.

The transfer sent the media and social media into meltdown and shirt sales sky rocketed but nobody expected that the football to follow would be such an instant success.

He has scored three goals in his first three Premier League games, opening his account with a brace against Newcastle on his second United debut.

The centre-forward has also registered 17 shots in the three games and recorded an impressive 81% passing accuracy.

He has also scored in both of United’s UEFA Champions League games so far, which while not directly related to the Premier League award does underline his magnificent form.

The 36-year-old has scored five goals in six games despite many having doubted that he would still be able to cope with the demands of Premier League football.

The other nominees for the award are another Portuguese international, Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo, Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, Newcastles Allan Saint-Maximin, Liverpool’s Mo Salah and Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.

Ronaldo’s teammate David de Gea can consider himself unlucky not to be included in the shortlist after an incredible run of games that has seen him back to the kind of best form that he displayed in the 2013-2017 period.

Fans can vote for Ronaldo to win the award by clicking this link: https://plpotm.easports.com/

Video: Van de Beek throws tantrum when not picked as sub vs Villareal

Donny Van de Beek cut a frustrated figure as he spent another 90 minutes on the sidelines against Villareal in the Champions League.

The Dutchman was an unused substitute for the sixth time in nine games so far this term, being given just a measly six minutes of Premier League action.

And the 24-year-old didn’t try to hide his clear anger on the bench, being caught chucking his bib and spitting his chewing gum in the general direction of the touchline.

He then had to be calmed down by Dean Henderson as his emotions threatened to get the better of him.

With United chasing a winner, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer instead opted for Jesse Lingard and the defensively-minded Fred instead of Van de Beek, a decision that seemed ludicrous at the time.

But within a matter of minutes the two had combined for Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal that handed United their first points in this seasons Champions League, and left their manager completely vindicated.

The former Ajax star has struggled to hold down a regular first team place since moving to Manchester last summer for a fee in the region of £35 million.

Making just four Premier League starts and completing just eight full 90’s as all of Fred, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba have been preferred ahead of him.

Van de Beek was denied a deadline day switch to fellow Premier League side Everton on loan, with club chiefs refusing to co-operate.

This led to him being assured by Solskjaer that he would play a bigger role this season, but as of yet this has not been the case.

With United’s glaring hole in the centre of midfield, fans have continued to demand Donny’s inclusion, but it seems more and more likely he’ll need to move on to get first team football.

United star’s sparkling form could mean the end of the road for academy graduate

One of the key talking points for Manchester United fans in the early stages of this season has been the return to form of David De Gea.

The Spaniard seemed to lose his way over the past couple of campaigns, with silly errors and mistakes costing United at crucial times.

A string of mistakes towards the back end of last term saw him replaced by Dean Henderson who many fans felt was the future of the position.

These thoughts only intensified when De Gea failed to save a single spot kick in the Europa League final loss to Villareal, missing the decisive penalty.

But after Henderson contracted Covid-19 during preseason, the 30-year-old was given the number one shirt for the start of the season and hasn’t looked back since.

Last night he continued his breathtaking form, making six saves from seven shots faced and keeping United in a game they very much deserved to lose against Villareal in the Champions League.

De Gea was instrumental during the reigns of David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho and had a very serious claim to being the best goalkeeper in the world between 2013 and 2018.

During this time, he won the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award four times (2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2017/18).

He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year five times (2012/13, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18).

The question that remains now, though, is what happens to Dean Henderson? Clearly too good to sit on the bench, the 24-year-old needs regular football for his own development.

With goalkeepers playing on into their mid to late 30’s, De Gea is not exactly old and if he maintains this current form, it is unlikely Henderson will get a look in.

A loan move in January may be an option, but failing that if the club were to receive an offer in the region of £30-£40 million it may be best for all parties if he moved on.

Controversial: Man Utd suffer massive blow with this UEFA decision

Aaron Wan Bisska is set to miss Manchester United’s next UEFA Champions League game against Atalanta, having already missed last night’s tie against Villareal.

The 23 year old was previously suspended for one match only, following his red card against BSC Young Boys in United’s opening fixture.

UEFA, however, announced the extension of his ban to two games on the grounds of ‘rough play.’

Many people in and around the club feel that this decision is a rather harsh one. Kevin De Bruyne was shown a yellow card for a worse challenge on Idrissa Gana Gueye last night against Paris Saint-Germain.

Diogo Dalot replaced Wan-Bissaka against Villarreal and may do so again against Atalanta, even though he did not shroud himself with glory last night.

The Portuguese has had a great opportunity to stamp his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans after being seen as the second choice to the Englishman.

United will probably also continue to be without captain Harry Maguire for the Atalanta game, who was ruled out of last night’s clash with a calf injury.

Luke Shaw also missed the match but would appear likely to be available for Saturday’s Premier League game against Everton.

The game against Villarreal was a must-win for Solskjaer’s side as they look to claim their first points of the European campaign.

United fans looked set to repeat the bitter memories of playing the Spanish side in the Europa League final, when they lost on penalties.

But after going 1-0 down after woeful defending, Solskjaer’s men came back for an exciting win with goals from Alex Telles and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Solskjaer can achieve anything now he's truly unleashed his main weapon

Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible last minute winner for Manchester United against Villareal saw Old Trafford explode in a cacophony of noise. If it had a roof on, it would have been blown off.

Man United were Moments FC once again but who cares when the moments are that sort of volley from Alex Telles and a winner from Ronaldo with the last kick of the game? I mean, we all care, we want United to dominate with a sense of control but those moments, those magical moments, create memories and give you goosebumps. Don’t ever wish them away as a football fan, they are irreplaceable

There is so much frustration around United at the moment. The fanbase is a Viennetta – some dark parts and some brighter parts all rolled into one ever changing swirl. Tonight, the light shone through.

Nobody is going to argue that performance from United was complete. Far from it. United lacked control, showed major defensive ill discipline both in decision making and shape, but it didn’t matter. We won. When our backs were against the wall, we again rose to the occasion.

It is both the most exciting and most frustrating part of watching Solskjaer’s United. When we go 1-0 down we are truly never out of the game anymore but at the same time why do we have to wait to go 1-0 down before we start playing? It is a paradox which until Solskjaer resolves, the shadows will continue to hover over him as United manager.

But, we’ve got Ronaldo. 36-year-old, past it, finished, dusted, may as well retire, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a Champions League winner in the 95th minute in front of the Stretford End which is full on a European night for the first time in 18 months. Try and tell me that’s not a moment you absolutely loved.

Ronaldo is the greatest of all time and now that 2016/17 David de Gea is back in business that’s helping us no end. Moments at the front, moments at the back. What we need to see from now on is United using this momentum to help shift the direction truly towards where we want to be and that goal from Ronaldo could prove massively significant in the course of our direction. At least, I hope it will.

‘Rolls Royce’: Fergie steps in to demand United land this major talent

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has urged football director John Murtough to win the race for Peterborough prospect Ronnie Edwards.

Despite only recently breaking into the Posh side, the 18-year-old has already caught the eye of a host of Premier League sides, including Spurs and Brentford.

However, The Daily Express reports that Ferguson has been so impressed by the teenager’s displays under son – and Posh coach – Darren, that he’s insisted United steal a march on a growing list of admirers.

Edwards made his full debut towards the end of last season and has followed that up by making the starting line up in the last three games.

Although he’s currently seen as a centre-back, the youngster is also regarded as having the composure and passing ability of a midfielder.

Peterborough owner Barry Fry had to fend off Premier League competition to land the defender and is already convinced that he’s snared a major talent.

Fry said, “Ronnie is a Rolls Royce. We knew that when we signed him … when we brought him in for a game, Darren (Ferguson) watched him for 20 minutes and told me to sign him.

“Spurs were watching him … and Brentford were very keen on him. In fact, Brentford were so upset when we did the deal that they complained to the FA!

“It’s no secret how highly Ronnie is rated by other clubs and by the England set up. We had 18 Premier League scouts watching him play for the under-23s at our stadium.”

Fry is known to be a friend of United legend Ferguson and has enjoyed a long career in the game. Therefore, his experience should make him a reliable judge of talent and, in Edwards’ case, he’s fully convinced.

He said, “Ronnie is money in the bank for the club. He’s a certainty to have an outstanding career in the game, but there’s no better place, and no better manager than Darren Ferguson, to help him develop quickly.”

Edwards’ star is rising so meteorically that United will need to act quickly if they intend to lure him to Old Trafford.

Best in the world: Interesting stats back bold Solskjaer claim

Manchester United star David de Gea will rightfully feel proud after a stunning performance helped his side earn all three points vs Villareal.

The Spanish side are notoriously difficult to beat and are typically remarkably defensive in their approach to the game.

However, in fairness to United’s stubborn opponents, Villareal brought their attacking best to Old Trafford, and luckily they fell short.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s men managed to secure a sensational comeback 2-1 win thanks to superb goals from Alex Telles and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, neither player would have had a chance at glory had it not been for De Gea’s own numerous saves to keep Villareal at an arm’s length.

De Gea has so obviously returned to his best and it couldn’t have been better timed considering the mess United are currently in.

In fact, if it weren’t for the instinctive shot-stopper, Solskjaer’s side may be in a more difficult situation already.

There were times during the previous season when it looked dead set as though De Gea would be sold last summer.

However, Solskjaer kept his cards close to his chest and refused to budge on which goalkeeper he’ll be prioritising.

Luckily it’s something that has paid off for the legendary Norwegian as he continues to benefit from the faith he put into De Gea.

Not Ronaldo: Man United fans laud star player after Villareal win

Manchester United star David de Gea has not been forgotten about by fans amidst the sensational drama of the crucial win over Villareal.

The experienced Spaniard played a key role as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s men completed a sensational comeback victory at the death.

Villareal made United fans’ worst fears come true by opening the scoring at Old Trafford but Alex Telles would soon brilliantly equalise.

It took Solskjaer’s side until the last minute of injury time to score the winner, with Cristiano Ronaldo coming up with the goods once more.

The Red Devils’ late victory might’ve meant De Gea’s good performance went under the radar but instead it left supporters even more appreciative.

De Gea has had a brilliant start to the campaign, winning Manchester United multiple points on his own, and appears to be back to his best.

Dean Henderson‘s absence and struggles with injury has worked in the former Atletico Madrid man’s favour but he’s very much put in the work himself.

Solskjaer will certainly be pleased with De Gea, particularly since it was his numerous saves that kept the team in the game long enough for his teammates to go on and win it.

Ronaldo snatches injury time winner for Man United in Champions League thriller

Manchester United have won in emphatic style in the Champions League at Old Trafford tonight, beating Villarreal 2-1.

United started the game on the front foot and it looked like it could be a dominant, energetic performance from the Reds who had something to prove after Villarreal beat them on penalties in their last meeting – the Europa League final.

However, it was the visitors who began to pose the real threat of scoring first with a series of chances that should have seen them ahead if it wasn’t for David De Gea’s heroics.

Diago Dalot was struggling to contain Arnaut Danjuma who had a great chance in the opening ten minutes only to be denied by De Gea.

Later on in the half, a well worked corner landed perfectly for Alberto Moreno who fired it over the bar. It was another warning shot for United that they failed to heed.

United didn’t look like a cohesive outfit as De Gea was called into action once more before the half was over.

Not much changed in the second half as Villarreal made the breakthrough in the 54th minute with a strike from Alcácer finding the back of the net.

Going behind must have motivated Manchester United as they levelled things up in the 60th minute with a beautifully worked, training ground free kick routine as Fernandes lifted it to Telles who struck it from outside the box on a half volley, finding the bottom corner.

From that point on, it was United who had chance after chance but they squandered most of them.

As injury time approached it looked like Villarreal were heading for their eighth draw in nine games in all competitions, however the story wasn’t quite over.

Edinson Cavani won the ball, Fred crossed it into the box and a fantastic, quick thinking cut-back from Jesse Lingard, who had replaced Greenwood in the 89th minute, set the ball up perfectly for Ronaldo deep into injury time.

The emotion was tangible as Ronaldo pulled his shirt off and Ole celebrated jubilantly with his staff.

After what felt like an age, VAR confirmed the goal stood and a few seconds after the restart the referee blew the final whistle.

For a neutral, it was a thrilling match, for the fans it was a tense match up that was won in the most satisfying way.

Team: De Gea, Dalot, Varane, Lindelof, Telles (Fred 89), McTominay, Pogba (Cavani 75), Fernandes, Sancho (Matic 75), Greenwood (Lingard 89), Ronaldo.

United Under 19s take different approach to Villarreal encounter - Match report

In a busy day of European action, Manchester United u19s kicked off against Villarreal before the senior sides met later in the evening.

With club captain Harry Maguire in attendance, United’s youngsters looked to impress and instil some confidence around the club before the main action later.

It wasn’t to be though as Villarreal controlled possession from the start with some crisp passing, making United look sluggish in comparison. It was obvious Villarreal were a cohesive team used to each other, while United looked like the mix of u18s and u23s squad that they are due to the u19s age group not being used in England.

The Spanish side hit quickly, taking in the lead in only the fifth minute. A mistake from Willy Kambwala allowed a through ball under his foot to reach Jorge Medina who hit the post with his effort and the rebound was tucked home by Joan Torrents Beltran.

United tried to hit back when Shola Shoretire played Marc Jurado down the right and the Spanish fullback played in a dangerous cross but it was just inches away from meeting Dillon Hoogewerf’s foot.

Up the other end, Villarreal continued to apply the pressure and forced a turnover from Charlie Savage in a dangerous area.

A curling effort meant for the second time they hit the right post and once again were the livelier team with Jorge Medina running in to tap in the rebound as United’s defenders looked on flat footed.

With frustrations growing, Shoretire lunged into a challenge picking up a yellow card. From the resulting free kick, Villarreal delivered an inviting ball in behind United’s high line and Marlone Foubert-Jacquemin sneaked in behind to send the ball pass Radek Vitek with a stretching leg.

United showed some quality of their own when Shoretire sent through a delightful chipped ball for the on rushing Alvaro Fernandez who took the ball on his chest in stride and hit a powerful half volley forcing a great save from Villarreal keeper Filip Jorgensen.

The bad day wasn’t over for United’s youngsters though as the Spanish side made it 0-4 just before the break. An attempt to play out from the back saw possession lost and a quick ball through the stretched defence allowed Rodrigo Alonso Martin to be free in the centre to strike home a wonderful volley.

After the half time break, where Neil Wood would have certainly been unhappy, United came out with a bit more tempo in their play.

Getting more possession of the ball, Alejandro Garnacho started to cause some troubles including delivering a corner for Bjorn Hardley who headed just over the bar from close range.

Garnacho’s intent continued to cause problems and he was dragged down on the left wing. Marc Jurado came across to take and curled in an enticing cross for fellow Spanish fullback Alvaro Fernandez to latch onto with a bullet of a diving header which would leave Edinson Cavani impressed, leaving the opposition keeper no chance.

Despite pulling one back, it was all too little, too late as the match ultimately ended 1-4 for the Spanish visitors.

A disappointing result which leaves the young United side on three points and third in the group.

United: Vitek; Jurado, Kambwala (Bennett 59), Hardley, Fernandez; Svidersky (Mainoo 76), Savage (Gore 76); Hoogewerf (Mather 59), Shoretire (c), Garnacho; Hugill (Iqbal 59).

Subs not used: Hanbury, Murray.

Scorers: Fernandez 72 | Torrents 5, Medina 22, Foubert 28, Alonso 45.

These three players dragged Man United to victory - Player ratings vs Villareal

Manchester United grabbed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Villareal in the Champions League at Old Trafford this evening. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 8 – Kept United in the game, particularly in the first half, with a string of superb saves.

Diogo Dalot 4.5 – With Wan-Bissaka in erratic form, this was his chance to stake his claim for the right back slot. Unfortunately, he fluffed his lines.

Victor Lindelof 4.5 – Poor on the Villareal goal and generally not looking like he belongs alongside Varane.

Raphael Varane 4.5 – Made a horrible mistake on 30 minutes that was not punished.

Alex Telles 8 – United’s best defender on the night. Scored a cracking goal and put in some excellent corners.

Scott McTominay 5.5 – Did little to influence the game.

Paul Pogba 6 – Tried some interesting long passes in the first half but faded in the second and was rightly subbed.

Bruno Fernandes 4.5 – Poor game from Bruno. Worked very hard but was wasteful on the ball.

Mason Greenwood 6 – Nothing much happened for Mason this evening.

Jadon Sancho 4 – Tried and tried, lots of noise from the crowd, but ended up flat on his backside too often. Will come good.

Cristiano Ronaldo 8 – Mark of a legend. Not his most effective night but a bit of magic wins the tie for United.

Substitutes

Edinson Cavani 6 – Missed a sitter, why the flick on the header? But worked his socks off during his short spell.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Why, exactly?

Jesse Lingard 7 – Looked lively and played a part in the goal.

Fred 6 – Fred plays left back. Another case of ‘why, exactly?’

Spanish giants after key Man United player after poor start to the campaign

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is reportedly on the radar of Spanish giants Barcelona ahead of the January transfer window.

Cavani recently extended his stay at the club for the rest of the season and is expected to leave once his current deal expires, however it could be much sooner if these reports are to be believed.

According to the Express, Barcelona want him in January but may need an extra favour or two to acquire him midway through the season.

With the current crisis at the Catalan club, signing Cavani would make sense as they look for the least expensive signings to help them this season.

The favour is that they can only bring him in on loan and would need United to pay for half his wages during his time in Spain.

Barcelona currently remain in 6th position in La Liga and will use January to sign a number of new players.

Cavani has been an important member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last season contributing 17 goals in all competitions.

He is yet to get his goalscoring form going this season after a small injury that meant he was sidelined for a few matches, though the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo probably doesn’t help either.

The Uruguayan striker left his former club Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and moved to England once Solskjaer and the board made a move for him.

He hasn’t only contributed to goals since he joined United but has played a key part in mentoring the younger players at the club including Mason Greenwood.

Seen as a short-term target considering his age, United fans shouldn’t be worried if the striker does leave the club.

However it does seem unlikely considering the financial situation for the La Liga club and the commitments he has signed on to for this season.

The article concludes saying that the 34-year-olds contribution to the club this season isn’t as important because of the Ronaldo signing.

Former star wants shock return but Arsenal likely to say ‘no’

Former star wants shock return but Arsenal likely to say ‘no’

One of maybe the more unlikely of Arsenal transfer rumours of late is that former star performer Alexis Sanchez would be open to a return this upcoming January, with Inter Milan likely to sanction his departure.

Sanchez left Arsenal for Manchester United in 2018, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going in the opposite direction – a transfer swap deal that didn’t work out for either club.

In quotes carried via the Express, taken from a now-deleted social media post, Sanchez wrote in 2020 that his move to United felt like a mistake from day one and said;

The first training I had I realised many things. home and I told my representative: ‘Can’t the contract be terminated to return to Arsenal?

They start laughing and I told them that something did not sit right with me. It had already been signed.”

It’s reported that Alexis Sanchez will be available to clubs on a free in the new year, and while there’s a sour taste for going to Manchester United, fans will have fond memories of the 80 goals scored for the Gunners by the Chilean.

The feeling is that this is just transfer talk without much substance, and Arsenal are unlikely to go down the route of an ageing player, badly out of form.

United legend offers intriguing explanation for current star's disastrous form

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has suggested the reason for Anthony Martial’s loss of form is due to the striker not feeling loved.

The Frenchman has seen his form nosedive since the beginning of last season, only managing seven goals and nine assists in the 20/21 campaign.

So far this term he has struggled to get regular minutes and when he has, he has looked unmotivated and uninterested, particularly in the loss to West Ham in the League Cup.

The arrival of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo has pushed him further down the pecking order, and he is now very much the fourth-choice striker behind the aforementioned two and Mason Greenwood.

But speaking to Sportsmail Sheringham believes he knows why:

“It’s similar to Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham, centre-forwards need to be loved.

“If you’re not feeling loved and appreciated, if you feel you have one chance to do well in the Carabao Cup and if you don’t, you’re not going to get anywhere near the Premier League games, it does put pressure on you.

“Tammy has gone to Roma and Jose Mourinho has said ‘go in there and if you miss chances, you’re not going to be out the team straight away’.

“When you are loved by a manager, you have that feeling. Martial obviously isn’t getting that at the moment because there are other players at the club in front of him and you feel like you have to snatch chances when you can.”

Rumours have indicated the 25-year-old could be available for transfer for around £40 million, but on current form and looking at his injury record it seems optimistic anyone will meet that valuation.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has such a wealth of attacking options that’s it is hard to see when Martial will get another meaningful look in.

A move does seem best for both parties at this stage, with Martial reviving his career elsewhere and United reinvesting that money in either a midfielder or Erling Haaland next summer.

Arsenal issue ‘significant injury’ statement on Granit Xhaka

Arsenal issue ‘significant injury’ statement on Granit Xhaka

After a lot of positives for Arsenal, fresh off a 3-1 victory over arch north London rivals Tottenham, the club are dealing with the news that Granit Xhaka has sustained an injury that is likely to keep him out for three months.

Xhaka was a surprise name in the starting XI this past Sunday, but excelled and was key to a first half demolition of Spurs. However, Arsenal have issued a statement stating that the Swiss midfielder ‘suffered a significant injury to his medial knee ligament’.

The only positive here is that Xhaka won’t require surgery and that ‘rehabilitation programme will start immediately’.

The obvious replacements for Mikel Arteta heading into gameweek seven against Brighton in the Premier League this weekend are Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Solskjaer given major boost after star attacker gets ready to reclaim his starting position

Manchester United wingers Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo are both back in training after a lengthy spell out.

Both players have not featured for the club this season after separate injuries have ruled them out up until this point.

Rashford has been out since the European Championships final after he decided to have an operation on his shoulder a few weeks after the competition finished.

However, Amad was injured in the closing days of the transfer window after it was expected he’d leave on loan.

Amad also took part in an international competition this season featuring for his nation Ivory Coast in the Summer Olympics.

Shortly after his return from the competition, he rested for a couple of weeks missing the final friendly vs. Everton and the opening three games of the season.

Then in the closing days of the transfer window, towards the end of August, he sustained a thigh injury meaning he’d miss up to eight weeks and wasn’t able to complete his medical for his loan move to Feyenoord.

In a tweet from Simon Peach, Man United confirmed that both Amad and Rashford have returned to training after some time out.

It is believed that they’re not training with the main group but are training on their own as they make the step up to return to full fitness.

The expectations are that both players will return to full training in the upcoming weeks with some time in October the most likely month that fans will see them on the pitch again.

This will be exciting news for United fans after a few difficult losses in the past couple of weeks.

Also, there will be a challenging couple of months over the course of the winter so it is a perfect time to have one of the squad’s prolific goalscorers return in time.

'Ahead of his time': United wonderkid delivers inspiring performance against European giants

Facundo Pellistri has been developing nicely while on loan to La Liga side Deportivo Alaves.

The Uruguayan played a critical part in the side’s shock win over reigning champions Atletico Madrid last Saturday.

The 19-year-old was pleased with his team’s triumph, taking to social media to applaud his team-mates and the club’s supporters:

“An important win against Atletico Madrid to start adding points in La Liga. Thank you for your support!! Let’s go!!”

Alaves had lost all five previous matches before registering their first victory over Atletico.

Despite not having a lot of the ball, the Man Utd loanee was tactically aware and made crucial runs to release pressure off the team while defending.

He made two successful dribbles, won a free-kick and made an important clearance for his side.

United signed the Uruguayan in the summer of 2020 from Club Atletico Peñarol on a five-year deal.

After enjoying a promising pre-season this year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eventually decided to loan him out to Alaves for his development.

Asked about Pellistri’s performance in the pre-season game against Derby County, he said: “I thought he was bright; of course, he takes his goal really well.”

“First touch, a good pass from Shola, but great first touch set him up (to score). I think he shows what he is; he’s a difficult player to play against. One against one, he can go up past people, and I’m very pleased with him.”

The 19 year old has shown excellent ball control, vision and dribbling ability to scare opposition defenders. He still has a lot to improve upon, mainly his physicality and decision making.

However, the recent performance against Atletico will give him massive confidence and might force Alaves manager Javier Calleja to start him more often.

Your're a Fake: United star accused of not writing his own Tweets

Manchester United and Marcus Rashford critics were out in force yesterday after it appeared that a tweet from the England international was initially posted from his management company’s account before being duplicated on his own.

According to the Daily Mail, the cynics were quick to question the duplicate posts and thus how much Rashford was personally responsible for his Twitter activity in general.

The 23 year-old has garnered much praise over his outspoken nature in campaigning against child food poverty and other social issues.

In October of last year, he received an MBE for his efforts.

Though the Twitter incident points to Rashford’s account being handled by a third party, that sort of delegation is the case with many celebrities who have busy schedules and millions of followers, and Rashford himself would, of course, have authority over what is published.

The Red Devils academy graduate will make a comeback to training after his shoulder surgery as early as the end of this week.

Last season he enjoyed the best output of his career, scoring 21 times and creating 15 assists from the left.

With his return in mind, perhaps rival fans are already trying to destabilise the winger with the social media criticism.

Rashford no doubt will continue to advocate for issues he believes in.

And one thing is for certain, after a far from convincing start to the season, United and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are in need of an injection of what Rashford can offer at his best on the pitch.

Even though the Reds are only one point off top spot in the league, they have largely played winnable games and performances have been disjointed at best.

Rashford will likely make his Premier League return against Leicester away on the 16th of October after the International break.

'There comes a point when it has to stop': Another top journalist launches scathing attack on Solskjaer

Manchester United have lost three out of their last four matches. Despite being heavily criticised for his in-game management in each match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly retains the complete trust of the United Board.

The Telegraph’s Jason Burt questions Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his overall impact on the team in a recent article.

According to him, the Norwegian is nowhere good enough to manage a club of the size of Manchester United.

He compares Solskjaer to other managers of the big Premier League clubs:

“It may be a crude measure, but here goes. If Pep Guardiola left Manchester City tomorrow, what would happen?”

“He would be guaranteed a big job somewhere else. If Jurgen Klopp quit Liverpool, or Thomas Tuchel exited Chelsea?”

“These are elite managers, after all. Now, what if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departed Manchester United? Where would his next club be? Not even Solskjaer’s biggest supporters would argue that he could expect to be at one of Europe’s top clubs.”

“Now ask this: if Graham Potter, Dean Smith and Thomas Frank were on the shortlist for a job along with Solskjaer, who would get it?”

“I would argue Solskjaer would be the fourth favourite out of that quartet. And yet he is in charge of probably the biggest club in the country.”

“If that sounds harsh, then it is also the reality of the high-level sport. And it is time Solskjaer was held to an account equivalent to his office.”

United were heavily criticized for their performance against Aston Villa last Saturday.

The reluctance of Solskjaer to make quick substitutions and change things tactically was met with uproar from a majority of the fanbase.

Despite steady progress in the league, United have failed to win silverware during his tenure and are now close to five years without a trophy.

Moreover, the addition of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo this season has put extra pressure on the Norwegian to deliver.

Burt mentions: “There is no immediate threat to Solskjaer’s job and no appetite for change within the club’s hierarchy.”

“After all, if they beat Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday, that campaign will be back on track, and if results go their way this weekend, they could even be top of the Premier League.”

“But does anyone believe it will be sustained? Will United ever be good enough under Solskjaer? These are questions which do not appear to be being interrogated at the club.”
