Nothing less than three points will do for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side today when they face West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford as the Premier League resumes after the international break.
With Solskjaer under pressure to keep his job after a slow start to the season, United cannot afford any slip ups in the game against the winless Baggies, who have just three points from eight games.
There were a number of injury and Covid test scares over the past couple of weeks and Solskjaer has provided an update on who should be available for selection.
Five players are definitely out of the game. Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones and Luke Shaw are still injured. Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo have resumed training but are not yet at match-level fitness.
Fortunately, there was good news on Covid testing.
‘Of course, we have the test results coming back after the normal tests we have to do before the Premier League games,’ the boss told the club’s official website.
‘All the tests from the internationals were negative, which is good.
‘Alex Telles travelled and wanted to play but then I think there was a mix-up with the tests – positive/negative and there was loads of talk about if he was going or not, first of all to the first game and then to second game.
‘He’s come back and has been training for a few days and is looking good.’
There was no mention of the reported injuries sustained on international duty to Harry Maguire and Anthony Martial, suggesting that they, too, would be available for selection, and Solskjaer was also optimistic about Marcus Rashford’s chances.
‘He’s worked in the gym and has got treatment. He joined in the session today [Friday] and I hope he’ll hold his hand up and say he’s ready. That will be up to him. I think he feels okay,’ he said.
The two biggest doubts expressed by the boss were over Victor Lindelof and Mason Greenwood.
‘Mason is fitter. He had eight or nine days away from us which is a long time,’ the manager explained.
‘He’s been training hard this week in the gym and on the grass. He’ll be back soon.
Regarding the Swede, Solskjaer explained at yesterday’s conference ‘Victor we’ll have to check tomorrow because his back is not great.’
If Lindelof is unavailable it would leave Maguire and Axel Tuanzebe as the only experienced centre-backs available.
West Brom should clear Branislav Ivanovic, Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson to play after Covid infections but Hal Robson-Kanu (elbow) and Sam Field (knee) are ruled out.
The referee will be David Coote and kick-off at Old Trafford will be at 8pm.
