Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has come under attack from two of ESPN’s main commentators and pundits, Craig Burley and Frank LeBoeuf.
Martial drew another blank against West Brom in Saturday’s Premier League game and has failed to score in all five league matches this term.
And former Chelsea midfielder Burley believes that the problem with Martial is that he is too arrogant.
‘Anthony Martial thinks he’s a better player than he is. It’s as simple as that,’ he told ESPN via The MEN.
‘He’s a talent but can he carry a club of this size as a striker? You see flashes of it but when Edinson Cavani came on, he must have said to him, “you know you’re allowed to move and make runs?” Because he doesn’t do enough.
‘On top of that his finishing wasn’t right. I think with him there’s an arrogance that it’s just going to happen, rather than make it happen, and that’s a problem.’
Another former Chelsea man at ESPN, Frank Leboeuf, weighed in on his fellow Frenchman as well.
‘Poor, really poor. I’m worried about Anthony Martial. He is a fantastic player and when he’s confident, he is okay.
‘He played with the international team and missed three chances against Portugal. He missed another chance today. For a world-class player, it was an easy chance.
‘He has to be a killer. I’m not pleased with any of those players. What I saw was a poor performance.
‘It has to be better – this is Manchester United.’
Martial is not the only one to be struggling, however. Squawka noted after Saturday’s game that that United’s forwards have converted just 7.7% of their chances in the Premier League this season, which is the lowest rate in the entire league.
Man Utd forwards have converted just 7.7% of all shots attempted in the league this season, the lowest conversion-rate among all Premier League teams this season.
