Chelsea have suffered a potential blow in their quest to sign Timo Werner this summer, with Liverpool reported to have stepped up their interest in him.
The RB Leipzig has enjoyed another influential season to date, scoring 27 goals in all competitions, including a penalty against Tottenham in the Champions League.
The Blues are believed to be keen on signing Werner, but Liverpool are thought to be the front-runners, according to The Athletic.
Chelsea’s interest has cooled because of this, meaning Frank Lampard may have to turn to other alternatives.

Considering the attacking pedigree Werner possesses, losing out to Liverpool would be an undoubted blow.
The 24-year-old has blistering pace, nerveless finishing and an ability to play in several attacking positions, which is likely to appeal to Lampard, who has got Chelsea playing some fluent attacking football this season.
Given Liverpool’s status as Champions League winners and possibly soon-to-be Premier League champions, Werner may just feel they are too good to turn down currently.
With the likes of Pedro, Willian and Olivier Giroud all in their 30s, it is important that Chelsea don’t stand still when it comes to recruiting new attackers, however, even if Werner ends up not being one of their targets.
