It’s been less than three weeks since the Spaniard landed the top job and the Gunners have made a strong start to life.
The former Manchester City assistant has been praised for his coaching abilities and now, David Ornstein has lifted the lid on what that has entailed for the Gunners players.
“There was one player I heard about who was explaining how hard training is apart from demands that is being put on them for matches,” Ornstein said in his podcast for The Athletic.
“Training is said to absolutely exhausting to an extent that a player was supposed to have somebody come round to his house on a day off and he said to them, ‘no, I need to lie-in today’ and that was just from training. They’re knackered.
“I think Arteta gave them a couple of days off after the Man United match but training has been very intense. ‘Incredibly tactical’ is the word coming out.
“You saw, for example, Sokratis doing it for the first time in what I can remember for a long time, dribbling out of defence because Arteta is telling them: ‘don’t release the ball until an opponent is committed’. It’s a small thing but slightly different to what was being done before.
“They’ve had a meeting before and after every training session that is said to be pretty long and detailed analysis, a lot of video analysis.
“It’s just the small tweaks at the moment that seem to be improving things at Arsenal.”
It’s an interesting series of quotes. The change is visible on the pitch but off it, the changes seem to have been slightly more subtle than expected. Regardless, it’s proving to be effective and the Gunners fans have every reason to be optimistic about what is ahead.
