Arsenal fans were eager to see the green shoots of change in their side as Freddie Ljungberg took charge of his first match at the Emirates Stadium. There was little to suggest that the supporters would get their wish early on.

Arsenal soon fell into their familiar slow and aimless buildup. Brighton were outplaying them in every area of the pitch and looked the likeliest side to score.

It took over 35 minutes for the opening goal and when it came, it was for the visitors. A simple corner came in and when Dan Burn won the first ball, it fell for Adam Webster who opened the scoring.

The Gunners came close to equalising a few minutes later when Joe Willock had a golden opportunity with a headed chance. Unfortunately, Mat Ryan pulled off a miraculous save to keep it at 0-1.

Things needed to change after the break and it became immediately clear that they had. The introduction of Nicolas Pepe on the right flank brought about a new hunger in the Arsenal side, adding an extra intensity and desire.

The Ivorian linked up well with Hector Bellerin and won a corner down the right flank. Mesut Ozil swung it in for Alexandre Lacazette at the front post whose flicked header whipped over everyone and into the back of the net.

Arsenal were a different side after the break. There was a whole new atmosphere at the Emirates and looked the likeliest side to score. That only increased when Mesut Ozil whipped a free-kick into the box and David Luiz applied an excellent finish. The Gunners fans celebrated but, unfortunately, VAR showed the Brazilian was well offside.

The disallowed goal did somewhat dampen the mood at the Emirates. That only got a whole lot worse when Aaron Mooy whipped a cross into the box and Neal Maupay glanced a fine header into the far corner of the net to put Brighton 2-1 to the good.

Two of Arsenal’s substitutes combined well late on. Kieran Tierney cut inside and whipped a fine cross for Gabriel Martinelli. His header looked destined for the far corner but Mat Ryan raced across his goal to keep it out.

The final 5 minutes petered out as Arsenal racked up yet another defeat in the Premier League.
