Player ratings: Academy kids save Utd from deserved defeat vs. Blades

David de Gea 6 – The only player who can hold his head up high. Made an impressive trio of saves in the first half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 5 – Passing was more accurate than most but looked decidedly uncomfortable with the pace of things for the most part.

Victor Lindelof 4 – Normally such an astute passer, the Swede looked shellshocked for the most part of this game, unable to find a rhythm.

Harry Maguire 5 – The best of United’s back three, which is not saying much. Still struggled at times up against Lys Mousset.

Phil Jones 3 – Horrible performance. Flew around the place like a newborn giraffe on a cocktail of steroids and opiates. Made a crucial mistake for Sheffield’s opener, slipping to allow Mousset through.

Brandon Williams 5 – Had a difficult game, with the Blades attacking down his side often and the ball seeming to bounce off his foot when it came to him. However, he did score a truly wonderful goal out of nowhere, drilling into the bottom corner.

Andreas Pereira 4 – Gave the ball away for the second goal and looked totally lost as part of a midfield pivot. Better suited to playing further forward

Fred 6 – One of United’s better players from the start. Always looked to move the ball forward when he could.

Daniel James 7 – Awful for 70 minutes, then all of a sudden electric. Such a delicious mixture of pace and composure.

Anthony Martial 6 – Much like James, could not get a good touch for the most part, until United suddenly came alive.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Even when United were playing poorly, Rashford led the charge, and so it was fitting that he would score the goal that completed the turnaround.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard 7 – Came on and made a tangible difference with the zip of his running down the middle, creating space for others.

Mason Greenwood 7 – Was introduced at a time when United fans had lost hope, but very quickly did what he always does: scored a goal. Proper striker, this lad.
