Manchester United and AS Roma have made contact over the possibility of striking a deal which would see Chris Smalling move to Italy on a permanent basis, according to reports.
The Englishman was sent to Rome on a season-long loan worth €3m with no option to buy once his deal expired in June.
However, Smalling’s performances in Serie A since the start of September have caught the eye, while United’s defensive duo of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire has continued to mature.
According to Il Tempo, the two clubs met on Friday to speak about the possibility of a permanent deal happening next summer.
Smalling has made five appearances for Roma in all competitions so far this term and finds himself as first-choice alongside Gianluca Mancini under manager Paulo Fonseca.
While he would be needed back at Old Trafford should either Marcos Rojo or Phil Jones leave, you cannot help but feel as if Smalling is finding his groove in a new destination and may be averse to the idea of leaving.
