Manchester United star Chris Smalling is expected to return after his Roma loan spell is over despite reports saying otherwise.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to offload the experienced Englishman temporarily rather than permanently last summer but many fans believed that was because no one would buy him.
Supporters thought Smalling would eventually be sold whether it’s to Roma or elsewhere as there was the feeling his time at United is over.
However, there’s no such guarantee it seems and if the tall centre-back impresses in Italy, he could return to feature under Solskjaer.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been the main defensive partnership this season and that’s unlikely to change in the future.
According to Sky Sports, despite rumours circulating over Roma’s desire to sign Smalling permanently, no such talks have been held and he’s expected back at Old Trafford in the summer.
Solskjaer’s current centre-back options besides the aforementioned names are Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo meaning there’s far too many currently employed.
Even if the legendary Norwegian opts to make the 3-5-2 a permanent formation of his side, that still means Manchester United have one too many centre-backs with there being seven options.
Rojo’s versatility has helped him feature this season at left-back but the general belief is besides Maguire and Lindelof, Bailly and Tuanzebe are the back-up options and no one else.
