Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp has spoken about this current Gunners squad and revealed what he thinks is missing compared to his own (via YouTube).
It’s rare to get an hour-long interview with one Gunners legend, let alone two, but Ian Wright did just that when he spoke to Dennis Bergkamp.
The pair played together at Arsenal for three years including that double-winning season in 1998.
Now, the two men have sat down for an interview in which Bergkamp discussed this current Arsenal side and what he thinks it is missing.
“It’s different, of course, from what I was used to. With all the English players and a few foreign players – it’s probably turned the other way around,” Bergkamp told Wright.
“Sometimes it’s good, but a lot of times you don’t feel it’s the Arsenal as we know it – with the passion and a few players who could make the difference.
“It’s difficult to say if it’s better or worse – well, better is shown in trophies which aren’t there at the moment.
“On the one hand, there are so many clubs and so many teams who improved so quickly to a high level – whereas maybe improved but not at that level.
“It’s difficult. It hurts sometimes because you feel that Arsenal, they should do better.
“I’m still hoping.”
It’s an interesting point which Bergkamp makes about Arsenal having mostly passionate players and then a few who could make the difference. That has been missing in recent years, particularly in defence.
