David de Gea‘s contract situation at Manchester United has ‘hardly moved in recent months’, according to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of the season, which means he will be able to speak with other clubs in January.
Man United’s current offer to De Gea – thought to be around £350,000 a week – would make him the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.
However, according to the report from Spain (via Sport Witness), contract talks between United and De Gea have not progressed in months, with the latter said to be unbothered by the pressure being put on him by the club.
United also allowed contract talks to drag on with Ander Herrera last year, which in turn paved the way for Paris Saint-Germain to swoop in with a better offer.
When it comes to De Gea, this stalemate can be put down to two potential things: (1) he wants more money and is waiting for United to blink first; (2) he doubts that United can compete for major trophies over the next few years and wants to spend the final years of his peak at a club which could genuinely win the Champions League or a league title.
Only time will tell which interpretation is accurate.
