David Luiz has revealed what Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah told him about the penalty incident between the two players on Saturday (via Arsenal.com).
It was a promising but ultimately disappointing match from Arsenal on Saturday as the Gunners went down 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield.
Despite a decent first half, the Gunners were undone by a Joel Matip header before Mohamed Salah ran wild in the opening stages of the second half.
He scored a fine solo goal shortly after converting a penalty he won following a foul from David Luiz, something which the centre-back spoke about after the match.
“I spoke with Mo [Salah] and he said ‘I didn’t feel you touch me, that’s why I didn’t go down to the floor’,” Luiz said after the match.
“But now with the VAR, you cannot see the power so it is difficult for the referees. He saw the shirt like that, but I don’t know. It’s difficult for them so I cannot complain with their efforts because it is difficult for them too.
“If you play with an extra-large shirt now, there could be a penalty every time. It’s interpretation, so I think if you pull someone with power and you change his strength to go to the ball, it’s different. It was just a reflex but that’s it, it made the penalty and after that he gave me the yellow.”
That yellow card hurt the Gunners for the third goal because it stopped Luiz from committing the foul on the halfway line. It was a shame because Arsenal put in a decent performance at times in the match at Anfield. It was certainly their best performance away to Liverpool for a number of years but was undone in a 15-minute spell in the second half.
