Manchester United are confident that they will be successful in their bid to persuade David de Gea to sign a new long-term contract with the club, according to reports.
De Gea, whose current deal expires at the end of the coming season, has been locked in contract negotiations with Man United for over 18 months.
The goalkeeper wants a financial package that makes him one of the highest-paid players in the world and reflects his senior status in this United team.
According to the Guardian, the excessive demands from De Gea’s camp, which are thought to entail a wage of higher than £350,000-a-week, have delayed an agreement, but United are confident that a deal can be struck.
De Gea will become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world if he signs the contract now on offer, which is thought to be £370,000-a-week.
Should the two clubs not agree on a new deal, De Gea is likely to complete a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain next summer.
United’s negotiating position regarding contracts and new signings has been notably damaged by the publicity surrounding Alexis Sanchez’s £400,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford. De Gea’s camp has obviously used this figure as a benchmark for players considered to be in the top bracket of performers at the club.
