Manchester United star Mason Greenwood will have to wait before being given a bumper new deal despite his breakthrough into the first-team this season.
The youngster isn’t exactly a starter but made his debut and full debut in what can only be considered a successful campaign for him.
Greenwood impressed United so much by his performances in the academy that it became almost impossible for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to ignore him any longer.
The Englishman appears to be the club’s next best gem, just a few years after Marcus Rashford broke onto the scene as a teenager himself.
Just how Mason fits into Solskjaer’s plans for next remains to be seen, but it’s clear the Red Devils will be patient in terms of handing him a new contract.
According to the Sun, a source said: “We are going to keep him waiting on a salary hike. He only signed his professional forms last October.
“We want to send a clear message after some previous mistakes. Contracts were handed out and then progress faltered and it was a difficult situation.
“The club want to keep his feet on the ground and focused. We’ll look at it again soon but we have big hopes for this kid.”
It makes sense for Manchester United to hold off until he’s more involved with the first team just in case things go south.
Federico Macheda and James Wilson are good examples of the club’s academy products being handed new deals too soon though both have managed to be relatively successful careers elsewhere.
There’s no doubt Ole has big plans for Greenwood but these things take time and his future is secured either way.
