Chelsea are preparing a role for former goalkeeper Petr Cech in the summer, as part of a planned shake-up to repair the damaged relationship between the club and the fans, according to a Telegraph Sport exclusive.
The Blues are concerned that fans have become disillusioned, with the club having fallen far behind Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
Cech, who made 333 Premier League appearances for Chelsea before signing for current club Arsenal, has already announced that he plans on hanging up his gloves come the end of the season, and the Blues feel he would add an essence of familiarity to the club.
The role would be as part of a new technical set-up at Stamford Bridge, with Cech’s potential position possibly taking on some responsibilities left behind by former technical director Michael Emenalo, who hadn’t been replaced since his resignation in late 2017.
With Mauzirio Sarri’s long-term future with the club also in doubt, with reports suggesting he would jump at the chance to move back to Italy, Chelsea’s behind the scenes needs a shake-up as badly as their playing squad does.
The club have been criticised for suffering somewhat of an identity crisis since losing their core squad that consisted of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Cech, and bringing the former Czech Republic international back would be seen as a first step in repairing that.
Chelsea feel that by showing the fans that they are attempting to preserve the spirit of the club, that they can drive supporters back to filling up the Bridge next season.
