Manchester United plan to install a technical director at the club by the end of this summer, according to reports.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was announced as the club’s permanent manager on Thursday, has reportedly told the club which players need to leave and come in over the summer.
But supporters have for some time stressed the necessity of Man United introducing somebody to oversee and plan for a broad, long-term footballing strategy, like they do at most top clubs. It is speculated that the club wants to make an ‘in-house’ appointment, with Peter Schmeichel and Eric Cantona named as two possibilities.
According to ESPN‘s Mark Ogden, United aim to have a technical director installed by the end of this summer. There is a belief that, following Solskjaer’s official appointment, the club can now fine tune the job description – something they were notably unable to do under Jose Mourinho, who refused to work alongside such a figure.
United are looking at a technical director, rather than a director of football, because they want a figure who takes a longer-term view over first team, loan players and the academy. They will have an input, but not total control, over the club’s transfer policy.
