Chelsea fans would have no doubt been watching Borussia Dortmund’s meeting with Tottenham with interest.
New signing Christian Pulisic was named in the Dortmund starting XI against Chelsea’s London rivals.
Pulisic has been in and out of the Dortmund side this as a result of Jadon Sancho’s form, so for many supporters, this would have been the first true chance to see him in action.
So how did Pulisic do against Spurs?
Pulisic was pinned back during the early stages of the game with Tottenham dominating possession.
He did manage to have Dortmund’s first clear chance of the game, intercepting the ball on the edge of the Spurs area, but couldn’t do enough in front of goal and Hugo Lloris saved well down low.
Arguments could be made that he chose the wrong option with Jadon Sancho coming in as a late runner, but you couldn’t blame him for trying his luck from a tight angle.

It was easy to see why the Englishman has been keeping Pulisic out of the Dortmund side. Sancho was at his dazzling best at Wembley on his return to England.
In truth, most, if not all of Dortmund’s attacking play came through Sancho which meant Pulisic had very little involvement in the final third during the first 45.
Pulisic never shied away from the ball and always looked to link up with Mario Gotze and Sancho, in what was a very versatile attacking front three.
On the ball, you could see all the technical ability was there that will make him an ideal fit for the right-hand side within Chelsea’s side under Maurizio Sarri, if he’s still in charge when he arrives!

Going into the second and Pulisic had a great chance to draw Dortmund level, with a mazy run into the Spurs box but saw the ball get trapped under his feet, while also getting bullied off the ball by Davison Sanchez.
While the American lacked in consistency when it came to his final product, there was plenty of promise from Pulisic’s performance.
Ultimately, Pulisic was unable to do enough to prevent Dortmund falling to a defeat. He’ll be hoping that he can have a bigger impact in the home leg of tie.
It remains to be seen where Pulisic will fit in at Chelsea, given the uncertainty that surrounds the club at this stage but he gave suppporters a reason to be optimistic about his arrival in the summer.
