Man United star admits it would be a no brainier to appoint Solskjaer

Manchester United star Chris Smalling has insisted installing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the permanent manager of the club is a no-brainer.

The Norwegian took over from Jose Mourinho as a caretaker manager which initially meant he would only be there until the summer.

Solskjaer was given the task of improving the mood around the club while the board focus on who to bring in permanently with Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino reportedly the favourite.

No one expected the former Molde man to perform as well as he has with fans now split over who should be made the United manager.

Smalling however feels as though Ole should be handed the reigns as he’s proven so far he is the right man for the job.

According to talkSPORT, Chris said to The Times: “Considering how we are playing since Ole’s been in, it would be a no-brainer if he was given the job [long-term].

“We’d definitely be happy. But we just need to play our games. Ole said one of the main reasons he was able to come back was because of his connection to the club.

“He’s seen it through everything. I definitely see what we had with Sir Alex [Ferguson] through Ole. He came in with, really, the one target of bringing belief back into players.

“We were going through a tough patch [under the previous manager, José Mourinho]. Confidence had dipped.

“He wanted to put an arm round some players, and just go, ‘You’re good players, there’s a reason Manchester United bought you, I’m backing you, go and flourish.’”

Solskjaer’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt end as the Red Devils fell to a 2-0 defeat against PSG at Old Trafford in the Champions League.

Though the main focus is on getting the club into a top four spot in the Premier League, many believe a good cup run should also be in the cards.

Manchester United will face Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday and supporters feel this is the more likely cup to win.
