Manchester United inserted a clause in Jose Mourinho’s severance package to prevent him from publicly speaking about the details behind his dismissal in December, according to the Times‘ Matt Hughes.
The 55-year-old was sacked just before Christmas following the club’s worst start to a league season in 28 years.
Mourinho made a clear point of not speaking about what happened at Old Trafford, and has indeed maintained an extremely low profile, giving only one public statement since Sky Sports manically followed him round his London neighbourhood on the day of his removal.
According to Matt Hughes, the reason behind Mourinho’s silence is because the club made sure he said nothing in the immediate aftermath by inserting a confidentiality clause in the £15m severance package granted to him last month.
The Portuguese will make his first public TV appearance since losing his job as a pundit on beIN Sport, hosted by that lovely pair Richard Keys and Andy Gray, for the Asian Cup game between Qatar and Saudi Arabia and Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal this weekend.
He is set to receive £60,000 for watching a couple of games of football, although this sum is significantly less because of his United confidentiality clause. Mourinho received £1m from Russia Today for doing five games over the World Cup, during which he bemoaned United’s failure to sign Ivan Perisic.
United will have lawyers watching the broadcast on beIN to make sure Mourinho abides to the agreement.
