David de Gea 6 – Beaten by two well-hit strikes in the first half; virtually untroubled in the second.
Ashley Young 5 – Looked creaky during the opening stages and frustrated with his use of the ball going forward, despite firming up defensively as the game went on.
Scott McTominay 6 – Like the rest of his teammates, the Scotsman – deployed in a back three again – looked all at sea to start with, but can be proud of the resolve he displayed.
Phil Jones 6 – Very flimsy for Southampton’s opener and careless on the ball to start with. Looked far more comfortable after half time.
Nemanja Matic 5 – Another painfully fatigued looking display. The main culprit for Southampton’s first and nowhere near fluid enough in possession.
Luke Shaw 7 – Gave everything on his return to St Mary’s. Defended with vigour and always sought to pour forward, linking up with forwards whenever he could.
Marouane Fellaini 5 – Far too slow in the first half and failed to use his physical presence to notably effect in the second. A disappointing showing.
Ander Herrera 6 – Played a vital role in hauling United back into the game with his urgency, scoring a superb goal to bring his side level, but could have used the ball better as the visitors went in search of a winner.
Paul Pogba 6 – A game of two halves for the Frenchman: highly wasteful in the first, much better in the second. Would have benefited from better runners up the pitch.
Marcus Rashford 7 – Superb display. Never stopped running the channels and provided two excellent assists – the second of which coming after a run straight into the heart of Southampton’s defence.
Romelu Lukaku 6 – The Belgian finally broke his duck, expertly netting home in the first half, but could have offered more link-up play higher up the pitch.
